Can anyone tell me how the S1 is different from the chips used in Chromecast or in those PC-in-a-stick models that are coming out at CES?

Makes me wonder how many times Apple needs to fall on their face before they accept the reality that when it comes to semiconductor manufacturing, there's only one company that can reliably deliver what they want, when they want it, with the quality they require at the prices they are willing to pay and that is Samsung.

But Apple cannot let Samsung get a controlling lock on Apple's products where Samsung can dictate terms and Apple _must_ comply. Apple has to cultivate options, however difficult to do so, where Samsung knows Apple can just walk away at any time with minimal impact on price & availability.

Samsung probably wants Apple to give them all their orders.

If a Samsung product fails and competes with an Apple product, at least Samsung still makes income (from Apple). If both products sell well, Samsung does even better.

And I'm sure Samsung is smart enough to read the contracts Apple requests and modify them to make sound business decisions, unlike GT Advance where lets grab Apples money, make promises, and run away.

This copying is becoming a bit of a grey area these day.... iOS / android seems to be borrowing features from each other.

Hardware wise, my note 4 and iPhone 6 plus are two different phones .

But where your argument fails is Apple doesn't copy from Samsung, nor do they troll Samsung in ads. Both of which Samsung does directly to Apple.

Offer a better user experience?

It's like asking why anyone would want an iPad when there were already windows-based tablet PCs that sported full-blown desktop OSes, ran desktop applications, supported multitasking and had full stylus support.

Or why anyone would want an iPhone that lacked a physical keyboard or a removable battery?

In both scenarios, if you just list out the specs on paper, both iOS devices will end up looking quite pathetic in comparison. But in practice, what they arguably lacked in capability, they more than made up for with a UI that was an absolute dream to use. So good that users were perfectly happy to overlook their limitations.

Anyone can dump a hundred different features in a device. As history as shown, if they suck, people simply won't use them.
I don't think....you've seen an Android Wear device.

Samsung would be in dire straights without Apple. Apple actually has the taste and design smarts to deliver. It would take Samsung decades to develop such taste and design knownledge, if it could do it ever. Right now it's depending on Apple to design things first which is severely limiting when it comes to the leading edge, not least because no-one in their right mind would reveal their latest designs to Samsung.

:p

Surprise surprise ..

Samsung does just about everything else anyway, so it would seem kind of "odd" for another company BUT Samsung to do components for the Apple Watch now wouldn't it

They say an elephant never forgets.

Well here's one (White) Elephant Apple will want to forget.

Let's get them released ASAP..

Get the mugs buying them first.

Realise it wasn't what they actually needed or did what they do thought it would.

Get their refunds.

Back to the drawing board.

Once Apple realise not even they can polish a turd - then innovation can start I in all seriousness. But even sprinkling a wrist sized iPhone remote with glitter simply won't wash. Despite being showerproof.

The Apple Watch launch will certainly be interesting. But interesting in the same way that Foot spas were interesting. People thought they would be useful and blew their cash on them ... At first. Then after they realised that it was about as practical and useful as a an ashtray on a motorbike - did they say "Ebay here we come!"

This over hyped bit of clunkiness with the flashing lights and oversized bezel with limited functionality may seem mesmerisingly magical to the Apple aficionados. However those with even a modicum of intelligence, foresight and patience (the employed, fashion conscious, technically savvy for example) would be well advised to steer clear until something more thought through comes along.

Thanks

You are wrong on several points:

-Apple has never had the ambition to develop a manufacturing capability.
-The reason they don't need develop manufacturing capability is that there are numerous suppliers able to do the same as Samsung. In addition Apple invests large amounts in manufacturers and could easily develop a promising and up and coming producer into a globally leading one capable of producing the amounts Apple needs (GT Advanced being a sad exception).
-If you would investigate a bit and know about about patent protection, you would know that China is actively working to suppress stealing tech and has stepped these efforts up tremendously in previous years. In addition none of the large producers would in their right mind steal Apple tech due to the danger of losing lucrative manufacturing contracts. Copying is a different matter though, but you can be sure that e.g. the Apple Watch copy at CES 2015 is not made by Pegatron or Foxconn. The risk for them losing their contracts with Apple are simply too large.

You are wrong on one point, china is not going to end stealing let alone buying up what in can't create.

Apple realizes that without Samsung components they lose a major advantage.

Where did samsung get the technology it has today? From the United States! S Korea was peasant country back in 1950.

Samsung would be in dire straights if it wasn't for the U.S military guarding the north boarder for more than a half century despite the Constitution telling us not to do so.

I'm not sure what capabilities you think the :apple: watch will have.

Retina display, Digital Crown for precise zooming/scrolling without your fingers getting in the way, NFC/ApplePay, Short/long looks, Taptic feedback, Force Touch, a nifty app launcher that others can't mimic without crown-like control, advanced in-depth fitness/health software tools, novel personal communication features (taps, walkie-talkie, heartbeats, animated emojis, sketches), a gorgeous design praised by many watch enthusiasts, an incredibly simple interchangeable band system, message analysis for quick replies, a speaker phone, sapphire display, and continuity.

To name a few.

Features to which perhaps some Android Wear devices have something similar, but they're spread out among different devices and not nearly as effective or well-implemented.

so they can copy

Copy what? The S1 is just a small computer board.

Can anyone tell me how the S1 is different from the chips used in Chromecast or in those PC-in-a-stick models that are coming out at CES?

They're all just little computers on small circuit boards.

The main difference is that the "S1" is potted in resin, which is used to improve moisture and vibration resistance.

Oh yeah... plus Apple PR gave their resin encased board a name to make it sound cool :)

That has to be a joke. Samsung makes some of the best looking products on the market. You seem to forget they make a lot more than just phones.
