Mandarin is the most used language in the world per person. However English ( not American, sorry ) is the most globally understood language, so to not support it at launch is bizarre.

Correction. Math is the most used language in the world per person. Love is the most globally understood language, so to not support it at launch is bizarre.

Why are people comparing Bixby with Google's Assistant?
They arent the same thing. Stop putting the two together.

Bixby is philosophically a different AI. It helps users with the navigating and doing tasks on their phone. It isnt a information gathering AI or a chatter box. It gets **** done. Simple.

I for one am excited to use both.

"Bixby, next time you say hi to google will you explain that my shopping list isn't something to mess arround with?"

Sorry dude the most used language un earth is actually Chinese.
English is by far the most used second language. Chinese pilots talk to ground control in English.

Also, Chinese has dozens of mutually unintelligible dialects.

This is too good. I knew Samsung could not pull off a flawless launch. :p

Could you imagine Apple releasing a device with a non-working button? That would never happen.

flawless launch will never happen at Apple, right?
you mean Siri, thats still hardly useable in non English spoken countries after all those years?

HAHA yeh make a voice assistant that doesnt work with the most used language on earth.

Ladies and gentlegeeks i present - Samsung

Most used language on earth? Are you referring to Mandarin, or Spanish which is second most used? Certainly you know there are places besides the US and the British Commonwealth with people who speak?

1. English is the standard language used to international flight. That's the only reason those pilots are using it.

2. There are people in Appalachia who can barely speak the type of English you hear in Orange County. Let's not pretend like America is such a uniform experience.

A feature like this REALLY should have been ready by launch.

Also, I saw someone in another thread make a terrific point -- lest we not forget the iPhone 7 launch. A promised big feature on the Plus model didn't arrive for a long time after launch -- portrait mode.

They were crystal clear that portrait mode was arriving with a software update after the phone came out. They promised exactly what they delivered: a phone without that software feature than was updated soon after.

Your post is incorrect and misleading. Portrait mode was announced during the iPhone 7 keynote (September 7th, 2016) and Phil Schiller clearly stated it would not launch "Until later this year. " And then on October 24, 2016, Portrait mode was available for download on iOS 10.1.

Nothing was ever promised WHEN it would launch and There was never a specified date for Portrait Mode. So, considering the fact that most didn't even receive their iPhones until late September through October, this by far was not a "Long time" when Portrait Mode physically launched.

Also, confirming what I stated, look up on YouTube the iPhone 7 keynote and fast forward to 1:15 in the video referencing Schillers quote on the launch.

They can't speak it, but they can probably understand it. There aren't really different dialects, but different parts of the world tend to use certain words or sentence structures more.

Actually, Chinese comes first, then Spanish, then English. But still, this is embarrassing.

You are right if you only consider native language. But add 700 million to a billion more for people who use English as a second language. This makes it the most spoken language. For example, the official language in India is English.

So yeah, it's a bummer the Samsung not to have it in English.

Google Assistant doesn't support ALL English language regions. If you're not English USA or English UK, the assistant doesn't even work, reverting to Google Now.

So if your language keyboard is set to English (Ireland) for example you are out of luck unless you change regionality.

If Google can't fully support all English speaking countries, despite many years at the voice recognition game, Samsung should hardly be held up to a make believe higher standard ....

Also there seems to be some confusion, as it's only the voice recognition part of Bixby that won't be launching, the actual 'Google Now' style card screen (the replacement for Samsung's previous Briefing & UpDay news feed screen) with content information will still be available ... So the Bixby button will still launch that part I believe.

But Google Assistant does recognise English, that is itself a significant improvement of Bixby. Google Assistant has only been out since last year but it supports one of the worlds main languages. Box by does not. Don't get me wrong Google needs to do better but that is no excuse for Samsung releasing a product when not ready.

How will the physical button bring up card results on screen with no voice input ?

Still a physical dedicated button in 2017 is very old thinking and not really 'smart'phone.

I can't see many people giving a toss about Bixby. Googles voice assistant works great.
It is a lovely phone but I find it kind of silly Samsung invested so much on this Bixby thing when there was already a good option from Google, and having a dedicated button for Bixby I think is just plain stupid.

I just knew someone would say that.

Tech media narrative: Samsung bests Apple in design

Reality:

Fall 2016: Samsung releases a phone that literally explodes

Spring 2017: Samsung dedicates a button to its flagship phone for a voice assistant you can’t speak to. Samsung last-minute slaps the fingerprint scanner next to the camera lens because it isn’t able to come up with a better idea on time. Samsung releases a phone with a facial-recognition system that provides zero security. Dex is a gimmick. Camera and battery life were not improved.

So what features am I supposed to look out for again?

This is too funny. Releasing a phone with a dedicated button which you won't be able to use on launch. Another cock-up by Samsung.

Be real, there is nowhere in the US one could go and not be understood assuming it's all in English, and I would say the same for the rest of the English speaking world, slang excluded. Spanish and Chinese have huge differences in dialects that almost make them different languages.

Not sure if sarcasm or not :(

Apple released the iPhone 7 Plus with a non-working portrait mode that was added in later on.

Isn't Siri capable of doing the same sort of tasks?

Preordered the Plus version and don't care if I can't use this yet. You can remap the button to something else, the beauty of android.

Why exactly did Samsung named it Bixby?
The first thought I read that name reminds me of a restaurant named Zaxby's.
I'm surprised they didn't name it Iris (Siri backwards) :D

Also, pretty funny this turned into which language is the most used lol

Over at samrumors.com, forum members are claiming Samsung is doomed and calling for Kwon's head on a platter.

With the majority of the posts stating "Yoon never would have allowed this!"

Hahaha post of the week!

Hey, at least Bixby isn't causing fires...yet. :p

Bixby, put out this fire.
"I'm sorry, I don't understand English yet"

From what I've read, Bixby is only supposed to support Korean and English at launch. Of those two languages, English is certainly far more widely spoken and understood, so it's a bit suprising that apparently it wasn't their top priority during development. (Yes, they're a Korean company, and I totally get why they would want to support Korean from the get-go, but I would guess that the majority of their sales are to people who don't speak Korean but may have at least some working knowledge of English.)
