obviously they will "respond strongly"....that's what people with expensive lawyers do... doesn't mean that Apple doesn't have the stronger case. Most people sue Apple (sometimes rightfully so), but in this case, it is undeniable that Samsung has hijacked Apple's intellectual property, MOST NOTABLY I THINK with the UI skin on their Android phones... Takes a triple take to realize that it's not stock iOS.

If Samsung breached the supply contract, they would be sued again. The difference is that in the infringement suit, Apple has a moderate case and the remedy if they win will be $100M-$2B range. In a contract infringment, Apple would have an ironclad case, and the remedy would be $100B-$300B-- in other words, Samsung would become a division of Apple.

There are people trying to paint this as though any tablet or mobile phone is similar to the rest so Apple has no case. Not true. Apple is suing one company for a copy so close that it is hard to see the difference.

I've had an iPod Touch since its first release. Zero crashes in four years.
I've had the HTC Hero since Winter 2009. I have zero additional apps on the device and have to pull the battery out due to a freeze at least once a month. This is my third Hero.

As someone that owned a new Palm or Handspring device since 1997 until 2009, I can assure you the similarities are far and few between.
You know, the Palm does remind me of something I remember from the 80's. Hmmmmm.

Apple is starting to be less and less inovative. The iPhone UI hardly changes for the last 4 years. But hey, lets sue everybody.
That's the whole point: do it right the first time and stay consistent. People don't want to learn new things all the time. There's so many 30+ year olds who are seriously afraid to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 because it seems so different. I like buying the new version of something I already know as opposed to not knowing at all what I'm buying, spending precious hours of my life learning how to do the things I already could do on my old gadget.
When you buy a car you know how to drive it, set the mirrors and seats without reading the manual. If someone came out with a car without pedals and steering wheel, there will be a lot of people rejecting it before even trying it out. People don't want to learn to drive again. Innovation in user interfaces is when you take something that used to be complicated and make it simple. If it wasn't complicated from the beginning, there's no reason to change it unless you notice you did something wrong.
Lots of smartphones are total iPhone ripoffs with added features. They're seemingly slower, more complicated and crash more though. There's some things I absolutely hate about the iPhone, but it's an okay tradeoff.
Thats totally untrue though. Yes a lot of the wanna-be's are cheap and plastic crap but saying that an HTC EVO or Samsung Epic are slow and crash frequently is ridiculous. My EVO has been flawless since I got it (minus of course the battery life but I use 4G all the time).
Like I've said before... the iPhone and the top end Android devices are almost identical now.
Could you please link the contract (since you seem to know everything about it), and out of curiosity where did you get your law degree?
The customisation of the Galaxy S has nothing to do with Google at all. This isn't stock Android and none of the Samsung UI elements are a part of the AOSP.
Apple has many, many billions just sitting in the bank. Morals and rivalries are always set aside when money comes into play. Samsung may not like the fact that they're getting sued by them, but you can sure as hell bet they won't care when Apple is looking to give them billions of dollars for their products.
This is most likely what will happen. There'll be a lot of angry looks and huffed chests coming from both camps, but it'll all work out.
What Samsung is going to do is say that individually none of these little similarities are relevant.
Can apple prevent anyone from using the colour balck? No.

Bottom is the best place for home button because of how the device is held. At the top you would block part of the screen. The Prada had the same ear speaker.
A four by four grid. They are simply going to argue that this is the best size for icons. Three by three is too large and 4 by 5 or 5 by 5 is too small.
Dock: this is the only logical place to place a dock. Seriously, what...you want it on the side, top, or back?
White page dots: this is too similar, might have a case here as there are many ways to have page indicators.
Green phone icon: looks similar but the icon is so simple that its going to be hard to defend. Basically a phone on green. What, so everyone else can't have a green background. What would they use for a phone icon except a phone icon.

Also, Samsung would lose their reputation in the supply chain as well as their credibility, and it would likely damage the Korean economy as a whole, and South Korea politically as well. You're talking about one company causing problems for tens of millions of consumers, and a mountain of negative news. If Samsung wanted to be bankrupted within a decade, this would be a way, for sure.
as much as others "stole" from apple I bet apple "stole" just as much from other companies. funny how macrumors failed to mention that samsung may be counter suing because apple might have used some samsung tech without asking as well.

That would be true if and only IF Samsung were an electronics company only. Again, they own everything in South Korea from grocery stores to construction companies, to apartments, to cars, to electronics. The last two are their newest branches. Samsung are doing well in every sector, but you have to remember that firstly, they are a grocery company, then they are everything else.
Samsung's total assets dwarf Apple many times over. There is no fear of them falling down (unfortunately).
