Apple is still heavily investing in LCDs. Switching to OLED means they have to reimplement many recent features they added to iOS devices like 3D Touch, Apple Pencil Support, True Tone Display, Variable Refresh Rate, etc... Plus there is still the OLED burn in issue.

Let's see what really happens...

Looks like a pass on the iPhone 7 in 2016 . I think Apple gets rid of the S moniker so
get ready for the " iPhone Pro "
in 2017 !

I like OLED but I dont think most people will notice or care. And I hope Apple keeps the current resolution and not join the silly spec race because the upside is unnoticeable but it's a serious drag on performance.

"Starting in 2017", means manufacturing the very first parts start December 31st. So, this'll make it to iphone 8 in 2018 as expected.
If what you say is true.....fine with me. My 6 is working just fine. Not really feeling it for the 7 (but of course will reserve judgement until it is rolled out). If the 7 is meh, I can wait it out; my needs are satisfied with the 6 and iOS9.

Yummy. I think OLED is the way to go Apple!!! I think they will put a very nice spin on the way the screen will interact with the OS. I'm thinking specifically of the way an OLED can light up select pixels instead of the whole screen.

So this basically means they won't bring the awesome display technology from the iPad Pro 9.7" to the next iPhone, because it would be replaced the following year.

Guess we'll have to settle for a 750p display for most of 2017.

They might break the S cycle for the 10th anniversary of the iPhone.

I'd rather have the iPad Pro tech than OLED. I'll pass on the burn-in.

I also need to hear more about how they solved the burn-in problems. I keep my Apple devices a long time.

Good point about the 3D Touch. Tim Cook said that it was really hard to develop, and I actually believe him on this.

But but doesn't Samsung display have an awful Pen Tile Matrix which Apple will never use according to certain members here

All the money I spent on iOS products, apps and iTunes media over the last 8 years I think I'm past the point of switching.

Besides I really love using an iPhone.

Have you ever done the math on switching?

I think a lot of people believe that the 'walled garden' walls are higher than they are. A few years ago I tried a Nexus tablet and thought I was 'deep' in the Apple ecosystem.

All my music transferred over easily. I realized that 80% of the apps I use on a regular basis are free. And the ones I wanted to keep cost me a grand total of less than $25. And since I got a Google Now credit, the actual cost was lower than that.

A lot of money spent was 'sunk cost' on apps I no longer use or media I no longer consume. I'd bet for most users the actual cost of switching is nominal.

It's a great marketing advantage for Apple though.

Isn't iPhone 7 the 10th iPhone? I'd say 10th device is more significant than 10th year. Plus, the release will most likely be September so it won't be released on the exact date or month of the original iPhone.

Oh no, Apple is going to catch up to my Samsung Edge in 2017, by that time I'll probably be using something twice as good. Must suck to be Apple.

Yes cause the smartphone experience is reliant only on display technology. Sounds like Android phones are running out of talking points.

Without good display, your smartphone experience won't be so good either.

For one. Apple is the only playing catch up game. So yeah. I get feel about Apple will say how awesome AMOLED display and completely forgotten how they trash AMOLED before.

And for once, Apple will pretend they just invented wireless charging... Just like they did before.

This is the best news ever!
finally Apple is abandoning the out dated, inferior LCD screens and move to amazing OLED.
and Samsung hands down makes THE best OLED screens, screw LG,Japan Display and AU,neither have the quality and advancement of Samsung's OLED technology.
and seems like old Ming Chi Ku,got it wrong again and was full of poop.

"... According to the terms of the deal ... Samsung will provide Apple with 100 million units of 5.5-inch OLED panels on an annual basis ... "

This rumor likely doesn't give a complete report on the actual reality of the situation, it's hard to think that the iPhone 7S Plus will be the only one receiving an OLED display. I may be mistaken, but the constraints in internal space should not pose a factor as it does with OIS

Samsung Display Co. will begin supplying Apple with OLED display panels starting in 2017, reports The Korea Herald. According to the terms of the deal, which is worth $2.59 billion, Samsung will provide Apple with 100 million units of 5.5-inch OLED panels on an annual basis.

OLED panels eliminate the need for the backlighting used in traditional LCDs, potentially allowing Apple to cut down on the thickness and bezels of its iOS devices. OLED displays can also provide sharper images and brighter colors than LCD displays, but higher manufacturing costs and shorter lifespans are obstacles that Apple will need to overcome.

Rumors suggesting Apple and Samsung were close to establishing a partnership for OLED panels first surfaced in January, when Reuters reported Apple was seeking deals with both Samsung and LG Display. Later rumors indicated Samsung plans to invest up to $7.47 billion in OLED manufacturing equipment to fulfill orders for Apple. Apple may also plan to source additional panels from LG Display, AU Optronics, or Japan Display, three other display companies it has pursued deals with.

Early rumors said Apple would adopt OLED displays in 2018, but more recent information suggests that timeline has been pushed up. Apple is now rumored to be aiming to introduce the first iPhones with OLED displays in 2017.

A rumor from reliable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and information from DigiTimes have suggested Apple plans to use 5.8-inch OLED displays for the larger-screened iPhone in 2017, perhaps for a wraparound display paired with a curved glass casing, but this information does not match up with today's report suggesting Apple has signed a deal for 5.5-inch panels.

According to Kuo, the 2017 iPhone will see a major design overhaul, which, if true, would see Apple breaking away from its traditional two-year upgrade cycle that includes a major redesign followed by a more minor internal update. Under that upgrade cycle, the 2016 iPhone would be the phone seeing a redesign, while the 2017 iPhone would feature the same design introduced in 2016.

Instead, Kuo believes 2017 will see Apple introducing a glass-backed device that includes wireless charging and biometric recognitions along with the aforementioned curved glass display and curved casing.

[doublepost=1460695930][/doublepost]I have seen the Samsung Galaxy oled displays and they always look like they have a green/blue tint and the gets more evident depending on the angle you look at it.
Color accuracy and true whites and greys look much better on an iPhone. It might not be as bright or vivid as an oled screen, but images look more realistic. I hope the tinting and the super saturated colors will be fixed on Apple's Oled iphone.

In fact, Apple already has oled technology on the Apple watch. Which also has a bad tint if you look at it from an angle.

I hope the OLED panels they use are less problematic than many out right now, (anyone correct me if I am wrong) but isn't OLED less reliable in terms of life expectancy and it has higher chances of dying pixels and such? I've heard stories of OLED having pixels die pretty quick. And replacing the screen is a bit more expensive than LCD too right? I'm not against this by any means, I do worry about new tech being implemented on devices that already perform very well.

Kal.

Apple's threats, attacks and other menacing behavior towards Samsung has failed to hurt them. They remain professional, businesslike and continue to enhance the products Apple sells.

If Apple was smart they would implement what Samsung does in Touchwiz where you can set the display output to Vivd, Adaptive, blah blah blah, kind of like a TV picture/color setting. Lets face it, we are the small fish in a very large ocean of iPhone users that actually care about the tech and features behind the scenes. And I always hear people commenting how gorgeous my fiance's S6 Edge + screen and now S7 screen are. Likewise with my previous Note 5. I'm back on the SE but it would be a lie to say I miss the vividness and sharpness of those screens. I also think, with Apple's battery capacity or lack there of it would be foolish to throw a QHD screen on their phones.

On the flip side, I love Samsung screens and haven't had a burn in issue since the Galaxy Nexus days...

I also would love for there to be a dark mode in iOS so all the background pixels can shut off, which really helps battery. This will also be the way that Apple can swing in an "always on" display for quick notifications and what not. Also not sure what that guy earlier in the thread was talking about rather having the iPad Pro screen. What do you think the Note 5 is?...
