Samsung to Supply Apple With OLED Display Panels Starting in 2017

Apple is still heavily investing in LCDs. Switching to OLED means they have to reimplement many recent features they added to iOS devices like 3D Touch, Apple Pencil Support, True Tone Display, Variable Refresh Rate, etc...

Good point about the 3D Touch. Tim Cook said that it was really hard to develop, and I actually believe him on this.

The OLED display used in the Apple Watch already has 3D Touch (Force Touch).

Does anything even need to be said about this anymore?

Yes, it is what everyone have been asking for. You left out the part that matters, when you quoted on bold the article part. Bezels!!! Yes, these thick bezels that almost everyone complains about could get slim down if OLED is used.

10 year anniversary for iPhone I guess calls for something special

Sadly this is seeming more and more true and will probably be why I move away from Apple - based on the rumours the iP7 (due when my contract is up as I'm on that cycle) is going to be a bit of a gap-filler product rather than a genuine new generation of iPhone, I don't really want the same old tired (and not great) design with some more ugly features as the "leaks" are showing, knowing that Apple are more concerned about an anniversary product next year.

I understand the leaks may not be genuine but if recent years are anything to go by they've been pretty much right once repeated by a few sources.

I of course presume now, all the Samsung and OLED screen haters (of which there are LOTS here) are now going to post how they will not be buying such a device?
There has been SO MANY OLED screen haters on these forums, for so long. I presume you are going to stick by your views, and not suddenly and magically decide, out of the blue you like OLED now, simply because Apple has finally decided to use them?

This is for 5.5 inch panels. How do you know they aren't going with Foxconn for the higher volume 4.7 inch panels?

That's a possibility and it makes sense to have different display in different models, so better quality (and maybe pixel density) on the 5.5 made by Samsung and a different vendor for the 4.7'' version.

I had a look, it seems that Apple sells ~16m "Plus" iPhones on average each quarter. Let's round that up to 20m which is 80m annually. What are they going to do with 20m surplus screens?

They must be very bullish on India, or some new product line.
Yield, repairs, buffer stock...

[doublepost=1460695930][/doublepost]I have seen the Samsung Galaxy oled displays and they always look like they have a green/blue tint and the gets more evident depending on the angle you look at it.
Color accuracy and true whites and greys look much better on an iPhone. It might not be as bright or vivid as an oled screen, but images look more realistic. I hope the tinting and the super saturated colors will be fixed on Apple's Oled iphone.

In fact, Apple already has oled technology on the Apple watch. Which also has a bad tint if you look at it from an angle.
You're talking about early model OLED screens, they were saturated, my Samsung TAB S2 and Samsung S7 Edge look far superior to my iPad Air.

Wish it read for 2016. My loved 6 plus will be replaced this fall.
I had a similar plan. But so far, every rumor points to a dissapointing update (to me at least). I think i'll wait for the 2017 iPhone. I hope for a new form factor, smaller bezels and no home button. Wireless charging, oled screen, waterproof = sold.

Why would someone buy a phone just for it's screen?
People buy iMacs and rMBs just for their screens.

I kinda love that MacDailyNews always refers to "beleaguered Samsung". It's childish and cheesy but always puts a smile on my face.

And of course iPhone 7S will stand for... my avatar. More promo for Pet Shop Boys!

How are the colours accurate on the OLED displays though? I get the impression images look over-saturated and artificial on OLED displays.

Maybe a few years ago and with manufacturer's pumped up settings - turn a modern Samsung phone to "Standard" colour scheme and it's about the most accurate phone panel out there (really, in actual testing, no fanboyism). Apple really do need to start upping their game with the iPhones because they're becoming dated pretty rapidly in so many areas.

Interesting!! Source?
Go to an Apple Store and listen to people who talk about iMacs. Most of them wouldn't know what a retina is if it struck them in the face, but they know that "OMG this is SO PRETTY". When we bought the 2011 iMac my fiance kept on going about "my photos look SO GOOD on this". He has no idea what a 5400rpm hard drive is or what processor is inside, but he can see that the screen is miles away from whatever crap he had on his Windows machine previously.

Or just read the threads about how MBA has a terrible screen and rMB with its Core M looks so much better and "I could never go back to that terrible non-retina screen".

For the same reason I honestly think a rose gold iMac would sell very well.

Yes, we know you are Samsung lover and nothing wrong with that. But hey, just because people don't like Samsung as a company (me one of them) doesn't mean we don't like some of the stuff Samsung does (like phone displays) I would love OLED on my iPhone but honestly not a deal breaker. As tempted as I been to get the Galaxy S7, glad I didn't do it.

So that's your source? I kind of figured, lol.

I personally been using Macs from 2008 up to present. Was window user before wasting money on laptops ruing crappy OS almost every year. And all I needed for is to run Adobe Aftereffects/Photoshop/Lightroom and a good video editing program. I have had one macbook and one iMac since 2008. Neither do have the retina you are on about. And I don't think I will go back to windows anytime soon.

"shorter lifespans to overcome"

Particularly, when users use their phones on pretty much most of the time... The only times the display will get a rest is when the screen does dark when it auto-locks.

I won't really be one of the ones affected, since i hardly use my phone and most of the time the phone *is* locked anyway... so i would anticipate the lifespan normal as i would have done on the iPhone 6.

Yes, we know you are Samsung lover and nothing wrong with that. But hey,

Just to correct you there for a point of accuracy.

I have owned an iMac, 2 iPads, an iPod.
As far as I can recall, I have NEVER purchased one Samsung product ever.

No, tell a lie, I did buy one Samsung Micro SD card. that's it.

I don't love or hate any company, it's silly and childish.
I'm just amused by anything Samsung develops, makes, sells MUST be junk according to far too many people here, yet, if the Samsung name was removed and it had the Apple logo it would be a stunning device.

If the Galaxy S7 with it's curved OLED screen, Waterproofing, Metal body, SD card, Wireless charging, great low light camera had the Apple logo, everyone here would be going banana's over it.

Why would someone buy a phone just for it's screen? While Galaxy s7 got a beautiful display, I personally don't find it much of a big deal to jump ship.
I tend to agree, is OLED somehow more... HD-ish, or clearer? I'm pretty sure OLED is better at power management, color saturation, brighter white and deeper blacks right? But what would be the trade-off in terms of overall life-span? And would one notice the changes that much?

Kal.

My Samsung trauma came from S3 being the worst device I ever used (and I used many). But since I realised I can make sure the Samsung logo isn't too visible by using a black marker on it and then putting glass on top I am even more tempted to swap my Z5 Compact for a S7. PTSD therapy worked! ;)
