At its Unpacked 2019 event that took place in San Francisco today, Samsung officially unveiled its foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Fold is a powerful smartphone and a revolutionary tablet all in one, a device that "defies category."

When folded up, the Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch display that's designed to fit in the palm of a hand, and when opened up, it has a 7.3-inch display that's tablet sized. It works with a hidden hinge with gears that are under the display. You can't see the hinge, providing a seamless look for the device.

Described as a luxury device, the Galaxy Fold comes in four colors: black, silver, green, and blue, and with some color options, the outside hinge shade can be customized.

Samsung worked with Google to create apps optimized for the dual-display fold, which supports a feature called App Continuity to keep the same apps open regardless of whether the Galaxy Fold is open or closed. With Google Maps, for example, in a folded mode you can see the map, but if you open it up, you can see a whole lot more.

Inside, there's a 7-nanometer processor, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, with Samsung describing it as one of the most powerful smartphones on the market. There's a 4,380mAh battery, which is actually two batteries on either side of the hinge.

It has six cameras -- three on the back, two on the inside, and one on the front so it can capture images no matter which way it's folded.

Galaxy Fold comes in two versions, one with LTE and one with 5G. Pricing starts at a whopping $1,980 and it will be available starting on April 26. It will ship with Samsung's upcoming AirPods competitors, the Galaxy Buds.

For a first gen product, that looks a lot better than I would have guessed. Clearly I won’t be buying one at that price, but better execution than I would have imagined.

I dont see the point. The screen when closed is tiny. You will have to use it open 99% of the time.
Nearly $500 overpriced IMO; $1500 would have been good entry price (and still high for a phone even with its specs).
And that weird corner notch lol, just why.

Despite a thousand bright spotlights in that auditorium, a stunning lack of charisma on that stage!

So, is it usual for Sammy to unveil a new product, and provide almost zero specs? Battery life?... errr.. “it’s got a lot of power”.. etc

Had to laugh.. “it’s easy to open Google Maps”... followed by three presses of the icon before it opens! Teething troubles with these new touch displays, perchance??

Overpriced and looks meh and interesting at the same time. I think the XS Max is a better buy, but this is a pretty wide screen, almost square.

And it will come in a 5G version as well...

6 cameras, 4,380 mAh battery, 12 GB of RAM, and 512 GB of storage. Pretty impressive.

Reminds of the Kyocera Echo, but cleaner. That's a compliment, sort of.

Apple’s version of this will probably start at $2,499. Then we get to decide...do we want to buy a MacBook Pro or an iPhone/iPad combo.

No idea what anyone would want to copy that but guessed you were joking.

It is definitely something new but is either a small tablet or a really odd aspect ratio / *thick* phone. Interesting to see if it sells so there's a gen2 improvement.

Wow. Sorta makes Apple's prices look like bargain basement now. Samsung really DID borrow from Apple's playbook. Kudos though to the first 'is it a phone or is it a tablet, it's both!' device. I am sure its going to appeal to some folks. Seems a tad thick though to be easy to carry, ' Is that a Galaxy Fold in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?'
