I do wonder how long the flexible part of the display will last. Also what about a protective case? How would that work?

So it's like a combination of iphone 4 and iPad Mini. In smartphone mode it has too little and cramped screen for a contemporary use. In tablet mode it's ok, but then it's a small tablet for 2k. They are first to the market, but honestly the execution is not interesting or convincing.

I gotta hand it to Samsung. Having a large display like that fit in your pocket is fantastic. The problem for me is that it runs Android.

I’d rather have a cylindrical pen-like device with a screen that rolls out. It would complement a Watch+AirPods+Glasses trinity as a large screen you can carry on you as a wearable.

but I gotta say, that Samsung CEO guy IS even more boring than Tim Cook on stage - and that really does take a lot of effort. Plus is it me, or does he keep saying "scallops" instead of "Galaxy"?

It’s really thick when folded and it’s closer to a hinge than a futuristic “foldable” device that I would have envisioned. Honestly it’s like the 2019 evolution of a flip phone and I can’t see this taking off. Something about it doesn’t sit the right way.

It’s different, but it’s a novelty, and I think people would want different ways to expand content beyond opening a screen like a book.

Flip? My $0.02 says it’s a flop. Time will tell.

In all fairness the guys hands were shaking like mad... he was clearly nervous. Sweaty hands and touch screens are iffy.
And who hasn't tapped an icon on their iPhone more than once to get the app to open.

That was a weird section.
If they’re not going to do the demo on-stage, then that could have easily been a pre-recorded video - and therefore rehearsed and edited.
Odd choice...

Call me underwhelmed. It folds so it's twice as thick as other smart phones. I have an iPad, and a iPhone X and most stuff I can do on my iPhone X just fine. IF, I wanted a thicker phone, it should be all battery. My iPad serves the purpose of the laptop computers I no longer buy.

No matter how cool this is...

Please allow me to be skeptical. I am just able to see too many hickups, broken displays, software problems etc etc. In a few years maybe!
No matter what - Invention is good! :)

Despite a thousand bright spotlights in that auditorium, a stunning lack of charisma on that stage!

So, is it usual for Sammy to unveil a new product, and provide almost zero specs? Battery life?... errr.. “it’s got a lot of power”.. etc

Had to laugh.. “it’s easy to open Google Maps”... followed by three presses of the icon before it opens! Teething troubles with these new touch displays, perchance??
Perhaps you are so full of your self that you didn't see how the presenter was nervous. I'm sure you would be much better at handing a big presentation to thousands of people around the world.
There's really no need to show specs, we already know the battery life is going to rekt away the XS Max. Oh wait the Galaxy S5 already does that. ;)

At its Unpacked 2019 event that took place in San Francisco today, Samsung officially unveiled its foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. According to Samsung, the Galaxy Fold is a powerful smartphone and a revolutionary tablet all in one, a device that "defies category."

When folded up, the Galaxy Fold has a 4.6-inch display that's designed to fit in the palm of a hand, and when opened up, it has a 7.3-inch display that's tablet sized. It works with a hidden hinge with gears that are under the display. You can't see the hinge, providing a seamless look for the device.

Described as a luxury device, the Galaxy Fold comes in four colors: black, silver, green, and blue, and with some color options, the outside hinge shade can be customized.

Samsung worked with Google to create apps optimized for the dual-display fold, which supports a feature called App Continuity to keep the same apps open regardless of whether the Galaxy Fold is open or closed. With Google Maps, for example, in a folded mode you can see the map, but if you open it up, you can see a whole lot more.

Inside, there's a 7-nanometer processor, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage, with Samsung describing it as one of the most powerful smartphones on the market. There's a 4,380mAh battery, which is actually two batteries on either side of the hinge.

It has six cameras -- three on the back, two on the inside, and one on the front so it can capture images no matter which way it's folded.

Galaxy Fold comes in two versions, one with LTE and one with 5G. Pricing starts at a whopping $1,980 and it will be available starting on April 26. It will ship with Samsung's upcoming AirPods competitors, the Galaxy Buds.

Sooooooo $999 on black friday?

Just throwing this out there - wouldn’t the watching Netflix or YouTube actually be smaller on the 7.3” screen than say a XS Max or Note due to the screen ratio of the inside screen? I don’t mind the idea of a folding phone/tablet, but these ratios don’t seem optimal.
