Ok, well it's easy really to determine if it's different or worse.

Take a sheet of modern crisp bright white office photocopy paper.
A nice quality, clean white sheet and place it side by side with a white screen on either iPad showing a white screen.

The one with the cleanest white would be better would it not?

I know that generally grey's tend to show colour casts better.
The only real way would be to have an iPad up alongside a high quality correctly calibrated computer monitor such as a Dell U2711 and see how it stand up for matching colours.

After doing this, and thinking about it, andlooking at monitor calibration and comparing photos, the samsung screen is far superior. When comparing it to the lg like in my photongives a false impression that it is dull and yellow, but, the lg is actually calibrated completely wrong. It gives a false impression that the whites are whiter when actually the samsung produces true whites the lg looks so bluenon everything. I now prefer the samsung because videos andneverything look so much more vivid and rich and the lg one is cool and looks pretty much washed out on everything.

I really hope your views turn out to be correct.
The whole screen fiasco has been the major point in me not buying an iPad2.
If, as you say, this new screen is indeed correct and it's the LG model that's in reality the worse one when it comes to colour accuracy/calibration, then I will be very happy.

Of course, this has the effect of saying that all the iPad's to date, and many have said how great the iPad2 screen's look, apart from the backlight problem are the worse ones for accuracy.

I just hope this issue has been sorted out and this whole issue never happens again on future iPads

I had 2 samsung ones now and I promis that they really do look so much better on the photos and videos. Much more vidid and softer on the eye. The lg ones seem like an artificial "office light" look.

There is zero light bleed on the samsung ones. At least that's a plus!

So how can you tell without opening the case?

I was wondering that myself.
Are we going to be seeing the serial numbers of the new iPad's to be different now the new panels have started being fitted?

I said before I have. On both.

Well I'm not brave enough to open mine or my wife's, but I can confirm mine looks just like that picture. I don't know which is which, but in my case mine is the brighter/whiter one with some bleed, and my wife's is duller/yellower with almost no bleed. Take it for what it's worth.

safari freezes and text than looks fuzzy you can't close it down or relaunch it so I have to reboot it 2xs a day PITA.

Dang I've had some weird safari issues a few times in my week of ownership with it but nothing to require rebooting two times a day. Geez.

I would attribute minor mishaps to software glitches but 2 x seems excessive.

Good luck!

You know guys, this is nothing new. There was the exact same panel variance on the iPhone 4. In fact I was one of those "stick in the butt" customers for apple because

1.) I preferred the brighter panels on the iPhone 4 and exchanged till I got one
2.) none of the the apple demo units on the showroom floor had the yellow iPhone 4's out of the 5 stores that I visit in the bay area.
3.) The yellow panels had this weird wavy lightbleed on the top.

I'm not sure if it was also the case that samsung produced the yellow ones on the iPhone 4 and LG produced the vivid screens, but I would definitely not be surprised, as the color difference shown between the iPad 2's looked EXACTLY the same as the color difference between the yellow and "blue" screens of the iPhone 4. Ironically, it was the yellow iPhone 4's that had bleeding in the iPhone 4. If you don't believe me... look at your iPhone 4. If the color "temp" is the same as the iPad 2 shown in the right of the previous posted picture, then look on the very top of your screen. If you go into a menu or look at the top bar with your battery meter, signal strength etc, there is a very consistent wave of bleed. It just so happens that every single one of my friends/family own iPhone 4's and the panel variance was just very intriguing to me so I scrutinized everyone's phone whenever I had the chance.

Thanks think I will do a clean install before I trade it out, or wait till year end at least.

If someone could correct me if that I haven't noticed a way to actually prove which LCD panel is from LG or Samsung?

The ONLY the yellow? Thats probably a poor recognize if thats the reason.

Either way... I bought my ipad mid-april and I do not have a single bit of backlight bleed that I've seen enough pictures of peoples issues how they had giant splotchy circles and areas around the whole LCD or however.

If you read the thread you will see I have said I have opened them up.

So you had to use the heat gun on to take it apart... ;)
iPad 2 doesn't use screws or clips, the glass/LCD panel is glued to the bezel.
The only way to open it up is to use the heat gun to melt the adhesive. Once that is achieved there is no way to put it back together.
Do you have a picture to show us your 2 freshly ruined iPads 2?
Somehow I don't think so... ;)

You could always leave your iPad2 on your parcel shelf in your car for the day, that should pop the screen off without you even trying ;)

1st the sun will burn the screen making the glue lose it's grip, then the battery will expand popping the glass off for you.

A hand free disassembly ;)

This whole shenanigans/charade needs to stop. I really wish an admin would just remove that backlight bleed thread. Just be happy with the device.

I think the warmer or cooler screen issue is nowhere near the issue of backlight bleeding. I think understanding what makes for a better image is a good thing to read up on but it's still a personal choice.

To say just enjoy the device even with a defect like light bleed is a bit much.

I do color critical work and have my desktop monitor calibrated with a hardware device to show correct color.

My iPad2 definitely has the cooler screen, my friend's iPad1 has the warmer screen. The iPad1 with the warmer screen looks yellowish next to my iPad2 but it is actually closer in color match to my calibrated monitor.

I agree but having a piss yellow screen would be more distracting for me.

I have 2 iPads. One with cooler screen and one with warmer. The same goes for my iPhone 3GS. The yellow screen absolutely sucks. They are dull, lifeless, and has a discolored look compared to the cooler one. The cooler screen looks so much crisper and more pleasant to look at. The difference between them are quite dramatic. Accuracy is one thing, but real life perception of the the screens for most users will be that the warmer screen looks less white, even when not compared to each other. Picture yourself looking at an incandescent light bulb and a bright white flourescent light bulb. Same effect. Granted, warmer screens are easier on the eyes.

Waiting for my 14th day to return the warm screen. Absolutely hate it.

This reminds me so much of AVS now. :)

If you hate it take it back. I don't know how easy it will be to find the right color temp though.

Urm... yes I used a heat gun and it didn't take long and came off quite easily. And for your information, it wasn't hard to use adhesive to stick the bezel back on. Why are you so skeptical?

I understand the light bleed is an issue, and I had mine replaced for this, but I think that trying to get a certain screen is a bit too much. I said what I said in regards to screen manufacturer, not towards light bleed. This issue was started in that thread. You will not even notice the difference between the two manufacturers.
