Software which reflects the capability of the hardware? That absolutely is an important factor.

Sure, Emoji won’t be the deciding fact but clearly Apple are far ahead in the hardware. The tech behind it is stunning. Software can always be released or customised with bigger and better features.

...as we have seen with iOS.

I think of this comparison like a restaurant. One the one hand, a bistro has a limited one-page chef's menu, but they are more carefully prepared, and on the other hand the Cheesecake Factory has a huge variety of downmarket and par-cooked options. Which you prefer is up to you.

Can I insert animojis on any text field from iOS apps? Will the receiver see the exact animoji I've sent, even if he/she is using a different OS? If not it's not only mildly useless, but totally useless.

No, they can't go in any text field.

Yes, I believe that can be sent to anyone with any OS. But to be fair, I've not played with them in months. As I recall, they're just sent a short video.

That said, I'm not sure those answers even qualify for mildly useless. Totally useless still seems descriptive to me. But I've also not been the target demographic for decades.

Good point. Perhaps Animoji is just a testbed for new AR features?
I think Apple uses Animoji to improve their depth mapping algorithms indeed, to make the next generation of Face ID much better. The first version of the depth mapping implementation really shows that they still have the capability to implement quality features. Animoji is just one of the many implementations that can use the underlying depth mapping technology of iOS.

I think that they are developing new algorithms that use the same kind of technology, maybe for broader use like 3D mapping with the rear camera (combined with extra sensors)? The WWDC 2018 image shows a lot of 3D objects.. At this moment, ARKit only supports flat surfaces (horizontal and vertical).

Maybe because I’m over the age of 10, I couldn’t care less about either feature.

GEEZUS who cares...(oh yeah 6th-12th graders) oh and IP Lawyers! haha

What I think is who cares? It's like they've run out of things to do with the smartphone.

What do *I* think? I think the whole thing smacks of desperation to generate more cellphone sales to "tweens" and teenagers who actually care about this cutesie but useless stuff.

First page, four comments who emphasize how little they care. Yet they cared enough to post on this thread within an hour of the article appearing.

Why did they just have to copy this? This is the kind of blatant rip-off that you would think a major competitor would avoid. The assistants were different since they provide some utility. This is as if Samsung had offered a bootleg Photo Booth in their notebooks.

It's apparently a hugely popular feature, and Samsung felt they needed to dip their toes into the market.

I don't get it. If you're young enough to care enough about this feature for it to influence which phone you buy, why do you have such an expensive phone?

Animojis almost never work. They don't keep up with facial movements and stutter like the beta software it is. Nuts they touted this as a feature worth paying for.

The Samsung Animoji can be turned into stickers that work on several messaging platforms. So no, they aren’t really copies of Animoji. The similarities are very superficial.

Sadly, they do not have unicorns. What will my purple S9+ phone be without talking unicorns? I will have to learn to be content with a hot pink frowning cat. I should never have sent my iPhone X back. My life is less magical now. :(

Ummm Ive sent animojis to my friends that have Android phones. Sometimes I wonder if peopled in this thread own or have used an iPhone X or just looked online before they spoke to make sure what they were saying was in fact true.

Mac Rumors is doing a lot of these comparison stories lately. Seems like sneaky market research rather than Mac Rumors.
good to know i'm not the only one who noticed, some people will justify the action by saying they are running a comparison, yeah ok but by doing so they are also talking about Samsung and showing their features even if they don't do it with that purpose in mind, they re still giving Samsung a promotion.

not everybody has the same point of view and i respect people who thinks different but i personally don't care about Samsung and their devices most of apple loyal fans cares only about apple products, the funny thing is that my comment remind me about a recent mac rumors post about Samsung fans being more loyal than apple fans, well something i learn early on my life is that i can only speak for myself, i'm not a Samsung fan and this is mac rumors not Samsung rumors, maybe someone should open a new web page for Samsung and call it Samsung rumors or android rumors

Sneaky? Not really. They Report news from competitors alike, in terms of comparisons to other smart phone manufacturers, laptops, smart watches, Bluetooth speakers, etc. it’s not all about Apple, as it’s also about the latest technologies between other platforms and manufacturers. That’s why I like this site, is Not just about Apple.

That said, The comparison between the Galaxy S9 and iPhone X is because they both do share similar technologies and its competition.
sorry i respect you opinion but i completely disagree in a friendly way, this is mac rumors not Samsung rumors, not every body see things the same way but for me this is like having google running a keynote about Samsung galaxy phone on an apple event. people go to the apple even to see apple products and apple software, mac os, iOS etc i understand and respect your comment but i don't like seeing 20 Samsung articles in the front page and having to go to the mac blog to see articles about mac os because they rather put Samsung in the front page that mac os articles, the page is called mac rumors for a reason, i already know what some people are going to say, don't visit the page, don't read the article etc. there are many more phone manufactures out there but the excuse is that Samsung is the closest to apple, well since we are going to compare phones, there is a Chinese phone marker i don't remember the name right now but i think they are going to bring their phone to US. and while we at it, what about comparisons with windows phone, just for a change.
