Folks, Apple seeks to be the best, not the first, in skating to where the puck will be. The Apple Vision Pro is the best-in-class device for ushering-in the era of spatial computing. Everybody recognizes the Apple Vision Pro is a beta product for early adopters to try tomorrow's technology, today. So, Apple has already arrived to where the puck will be and when the technology catches up, watch out, because the ALL NEW Vision Pro will truly be a game changer for ultra pros!
I dunno where people get this crap from.
Plenty of times Apple has raved about being the first with 'x' and are you REALLY telling me that Apple make the best mice?
You're telling me that this is what they thought would earn them the moniker, "best"??

Yes, THIS!!

Yes, THIS!!
Yes! This was a best-in-class, game changer that delighted customers. No one else could replicate how truly revolutionary this mouse was. It was truly the mouse for ultra pro users!

What chip is going to power these headsets? The 2 leading chipmakers for mobile are Apple and Qualcomm and I don’t think the snapdragon can handle this unless they do something like a duel chip.

It's Qualcomm and the first Google XR headset [not clear in the article]. I imagine it is going to be very interesting based on Google IO 2025....

Hopefully, it can push that resolution with enough overhead to comfortably surpass the current Snapdragon chipset. What I don’t want to see is increased resolution at the cost of CPU/GPU performance.

Certain individuals live and die on specs. If the specs are better the result must be better, or so they argue. Even though the human eye is almost incapable of seeing the difference between 4K and 8K those individuals will decide by spec alone. But that’s not the case in many instances. The proof will be in the user experience.
In the photography forum they're known as measurebators. Most folks in the forum ignores them because we care about results, not specs. The worst camera system ever, the Holga, in the hands of a talented photographer produces better photos than the highest spec DSLR in the hands of a noob.

Samsung's headset is going to fail just as badly as the AVP unless it has some killer apps.

Samsung also always has better displays because it literally makes Apple's displays 😂
Not always true. The Display division of Samsung sells its displays to both Apple and to Samsung mobile for their devices. Sometimes Samsung mobile sources better models and sometimes not. The divisions of Samsung are not that closely tied.

I’d love an AVP once they’ve been had a couple of iterations and assumedly mellowed in price - hopefully Samsung can get people more interested in the concept. Have avoided first gen Apple gear since the Newton and iBook!

Not sure why samsung are even trying.

For all the technical advances, the AVP struggle to move. It's not because people want higher specs on it.

Make something 50% as good at 10% the price and 50% the weight and it'll do fine.

Now that I think of it; back in the olden days of when i had a S6/S7 I owned a samsung Gear VR which I got for free from samsung via redemption and that was plenty good enough to play around with as a novelty. Unsure why they discontinued that lineup.

The FOV is my biggest gripe with the Vision Pro (and the weight of the damn thing), so this seems crazy that samsung are making it worse.

The scary thing is, the odds are this post could be legit as much as it's satire.

Eh--- I dunno. I found headsets exciting 10 years ago. And after playing around with them for 10 years, the shine and general interest has worn off completely for me.

The "future" is maybe AR glasses that pack all of the capabilities of an AVP and even more, into a regular pair of reading glasses...except even Meta's experimental glasses don't come close, and they aren't even manufacturable on a consumer level due to the exotic materials that are required for the optics to work.

All of these bulky headsets have the same issue of convenience and comfort (and honestly, lack of compelling use-cases for most people), which is the biggest blocker to getting the general public interested. And until they are no longer bulky and inconvenient, all of these product releases are going to continue to sell poorly. I just don't see why anyone is wasting time creating these things at this point.
My AVP completely replaced the living room setup I've been building for years. I just love it for media consumption. There's nothing better. They have to have this stuff out in the public and in developers hands so it can get better. I mean the first iPhone was a slow clunky phone with 2g speed, no apps and lacked the basic functions of a flip phone like mms. stuff takes time and use to evolve. it doesn't sell poorly for any of those reasons. It sells poorly cus it's $3499 and the general public doesn't know it exists.

Samsung's upcoming AR/VR headset will feature more advanced displays than Apple's Vision Pro, according to a new supply chain report from The Elec that reveals key specifications and sourcing strategies.

Samsung is preparing to launch its first extended reality (XR) headset later in 2025, and it will reportedly contain displays that surpass the resolution of Apple's Vision Pro. The Elec claims that the device will use 1.3-inch OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) microdisplays with a pixel density of approximately 3,800 pixels per inch (PPI).

In comparison, the Vision Pro uses 1.42-inch OLEDoS panels from Sony with a pixel density of 3,391 PPI. The increase in pixel density will likely represent a significant improvement in visual clarity over the Vision Pro. Despite having a slightly smaller panel, which could reduce the field of view, Samsung's headset should be able to deliver sharper visuals.

The Vision Pro was the first mainstream consumer device to adopt OLEDoS microdisplays. OLEDoS technology allows for extremely high resolution in compact form factors, making it particularly suitable for immersive virtual reality applications.

Samsung is apparently reviewing plans to source OLEDoS panels from both Sony and Samsung Display, with Sony currently acting as the main supplier. While Sony is recognized for its expertise in microdisplay manufacturing, it has limited its production capacity and previously declined Apple's request to expand output for the Vision Pro. Sony's focus remains centered on its entertainment business, and it is reportedly cautious about committing additional resources to its display operations.

Even budget phones offer better than apple it's nothing new. This year Qualcomm beats apple in both cpu and gpu and now there's no reason to be paying Ferrari prices for Apple's Honda

Even for media consumption it's a hard sell. A lot of people consume media in a social setting. For me, I only ever watch movies with my spouse-- never alone. A headset is an isolating device, no matter how much you try to make it inclusive with passthrough features or whatever.
On top of that, you have a limited field of view in the headset, and the display optics are not perfect and have blooming/glare issues that affect the image quality. And you have limited battery life, so if you want to watch a 3 hour movie, you have to plug the headset into an outlet. You really can't say there's nothing better when it's still a flawed experience.

When you say it takes time and use to evolve, you neglect the fact that this stuff has been "evolving" for over 10 years at this point. Apple has barely moved the needle with the AVP, and their only real advancement to the technology is the finger-pinch stuff with the UI. The apps are still generally as bad as they've been for the past 10 years. The majority of tasks that you'd normally do on your phone or your laptop are not better experiences in a headset-- in fact, a lot of them are more hassle to do in a headset. It's a lot of gimmick without solving real-world problems that keep people from using it.

This lines up with the gen 2 production of this display type…congrats on buying the current generation Samsung?

I’m not convinced they’ll be able to touch the immersiveness of the AVP, I don’t think anyone has a chipset out there right now to do sensor fusion the way Apple has 🤷‍♂️
