Flash: nice.
5 MP: meaningless, since the lens is still tiny and ******, so the pictures will still suck.

My first digital camera, a 2.1MP Fujifilm, took pictures infinitely better than my iPhone does, in spite of being the same MP rating. It's all about the quality of the lens...

The number of megapixels isn't meaningless but I agree it's way overhyped. Image quality is a result of lens, number of pixels and CCD sensor.

Looks like the Instinct.

I seriously considered the Instinct prior to getting my Iphone since I was with Sprint I thought it would be an easy move to the Instinct, I went to check it out at the Sprint store and I didn't like it at all. If this has a similar OS then I doubt it will do very well.

I guess time will tell.

Ugh. T-Mobile. Seriously, the crappiness of T-Mobile's myriad of iPhone knock-offs is matched only by the crappiness of their network. It Has to be about the size of a postage stamp. :D

My stepson adored his Treo for work for years, but just replaced it with a HTC Touch Pro.

Yes, the iPhone has had all sorts of fallout. The media coverage of smartphones has skyrocketed and so have smartphone sales of all makes.

The iPhone is indirectly responsible for the huge rise of HTC as a smartphone power, since HTC is quite willing to make both CDMA and GSM versions and sell them to everyone.... taking markets that Apple ignores.

There's also the new use of WM on the part of large companies like Sony-Ericsson (Xperia phone) and even Nokia signing up to install Silverlight. Amazing.

That's one plus about HTC...they sell to anyone. You can go to almost any carrier and buy something similiar, if not identical, to what every other carrier has. That means you can choose a carrier that offers something close to what you need instead of having to shoehorn your needs into what some chosen carrier is capable of giving you.

The other plus, and the reason I still have my Tilt, is that they couldn't care less about what software you use on it. Neither HTC nor Microsoft. Since there's no useful GPS app for the iPhone and I have TomTom on the Tilt, if I go anywhere, I take the Tilt, not the iPhone.

Think Freedom. Think Microsoft.

How ironic.

At least they went with T-mobile. Sprint is in big trouble these days.

Sprint's stock is down 92 % for the past twelve months. After thinking it couldn't possibly go lower, it was down another 27% today. They reported last quarter that they had lost 1.3 million subscribers to their competitors, and just earlier this week, they reported they are closing 135 retail stores. Sprint is in really bad shape these days. I haven't looked to see how T-mobile is doing yet, but I can't imagine they're doing much better. Maybe this new phone will help them a little. Even still, the iPhone3G is clearly the best phone out right now.
Here's the info on Sprint: http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=S

Either way, I'd never get other touch screen phones instead of the iPhone. All of LG's/Samsung's/BlackBerry's offerings have the ********* touch screens I've ever seen. Most have plastic screens and buttons everywhere. And the touch screen doesn't work half the time. It just doesn't have the natural feeling of an iPhone's touch capabilities. They all feel like some cheap knockoff.

Gorgeous phone in real life, much more stylish and compact that the iPhone (Which seems like a brick in comparison), nice responsive touchscreen.

Obviously not as feature rich as the iPhone, (it's waaaay under half the price here) but it's still pretty good.

And my company will give me one for free!

That's quite an odd statement. I always viewed the iPhone as feature deficient (and I have one). What functionality does the iPhone have that this phone doesn't?

What is the OS running on this phone? Is it Win Mo? If it's Win Mo, then as fugly as it is, it's still pretty functional.

Well, it goes to show that AT&T thinks a lot less of the iPhone than Apple thinks of AT&T. I do like that there are more non-HTC WM phones hitting the market these days. The Treo was easily my favorite WM phone.

or maybe they're just making smart business moves
if you sign a potential iPhone killer (or whatever these things are, cuz they certianly can't compete with the iPhone) on as an exclusive device, then it can't really kill the iPhone, because it won't take customers away from the ATT service.
It may involve their consideration of the iPhones success much more than you think (after all, they restructured their entire voicemail process, activation process, etc for the iPhone, and deployed 3G at a much faster rate right around its launch...thats not thinking "less" of the iPhone)

and I just hope this Samsung phone doesn't fall subject to the same horrible advertising campaign as the Instinct (Instinct vs iPhone....oh please)

the "functionality" would be the best in class user interface and the multi touch display. The iPhone is more capable than any other mobile device ever designed (except the sonar phone in the Dark Knight :p)
unfortunately, Apple has yet to take advantage of some of that capability. but the app store is already allowing this phone to do things most people would never think possible

For some reason all these "other" phones just dont seem as well put together as the iphone "stylishly" and "functionality". The again I think that macs look better and perform better than any computer out there personal preference.

I agree. The iPhone is very easy to use and has a very responsive interface. I was confusing "functionality" with "features." I find that some of the Win Mo phones or Blackberrys have many more features (making folders for your downloads, a taskmanager, tweakable interface, tethering, MMS, cut and paste, MMS, video, flash, real GPS, non-obsolete camera, the list goes on and on...) than the iPhone.

Man, these companies keep trying to take on the iphone, and seem to think exluding wifi isnt going to hurt them.

 Maybe im ignorant, but WHAAAAAAAA?

The biggest problem with Verizon's iPhone killers is that they make their phones run their Verizon crap OS (except Blackberrys) and they won't allow wifi in any of their phones. I know that T-mobile allows wifi in their phones, and I'm not sure about Sprint.

I don't see how it's anything close to the iPhone in design at all. I guess the silver lining around the top of it might look similar to the iPhone's home button, but only on pictures. But I guess every touchscreen phone is a copy of the iPhone to some people. The phone itself looks quite nice, and it has lots of stuff that the iPhone doesn't. Of course if it had Android . . . it would be worth looking at. The HTC Touch HD is hot, and should definitely be picked up by someone in the US.

Yea i figured itd be the companies stiff arming into the design. That way they can force ppl to pay for internet useage that is severly subpar compared to wifi.

Unfortuneatly for them, people realize this.

Wrong on all counts.

Many of Verizon's smartphones run WinMo, and unlike the iPhone, are not restricted in what kind of programs are allowed. (With the exception of GPS access, which is due to change 1H2009.)

As for WiFi, many of their smartphones have had that for years. i730, i760, Saga, xv6700, xv6800, Omnia, Touch Pro. Basically, if it was designed with WiFi, it still has it.

AT&T's Samsung Eternity: Touch screen, video share, 3.2MP camera (not really important), MMS, and unlimited Media Net @ $15/month. Text already covered in my current family plan, so no need to turn my plan upside down for an iPhone. I think I'll take it. :)
