Well, if they do this they'll definitely shoot themselves in the foot.

And I'll have to look elsewhere, which I already am since the OnePlus 3T is both nice and inexpensive.

And I'm OK with that.

Mobile devices have gotten to the point where they all pretty much do everything I need them to, so brand loyalty is at an all-time low for me.

Of course this was coming. No phones will have 3.5mm jacks in 5 years.

Apple once again leads the way in dropping outdated technology to drag us into the future.

And replacing it with a proprietary solution while the rest of the industry uses a standard (USB C)

You will probably even be able to use Samsung earphones with the new MacBook Pro.

I said this at the time. No-one believed me. It was so obvious it'd happen.

Oh. And don't rush it to market Samsung, try and get the battery right first. Rushing things isn't always the best idea is it?

I'm Calling absolute Bull-Crud on this one.

Samsung has eaten crow before by removing features like this that set themselves apart from Apple, and unlike Apple have reversed decisions.

The SD Card / Battery size is a good example

with the S6, Samsung tried Apple's "closed" down approach. no SD card, And tiny battery in a very slim device.

They reversed that decision with the S7, made it thicker, added the SD card back, and gave better battery.

I TRULY doubt that they're going to just arbitrarily drop the 3.5mm jack because Apple did. Especially Samsung, whose historically always included as many features they possibly could, even if they weren't useful.

So - why did Sammy gloat about the headphone jack when the S7 Note was announced?

Answer - the dude doing the presentation was a marketing exec. He likely didn't know about the state of the S8, or just didn't care. He made a cheap shot because cheap shots at Apple are a part of Samsung's marketing strategy.

Still funny though.

I think it would be much easier for a lot of people to swallow if the AirPods were cheaper. I don't think 95% of people would care at all if the came with the iPhone. But who knows.

"There will be no way to charge and listen to music at the same time without a special adapter"

No Way? How about Bluetooth headphones?? Cause that is what i'm doing as I type/charge and listen to music...

Many iPhone users have not been happy with the removal of the headphone jack, a fact that Samsung took advantage of when announcing the now-defunct Galaxy Note 7. "Want to know what else it comes with?" Samsung VP Justin Denison asked on stage, mocking the iPhone. "An audio jack, I'm just saying."
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Hold on, give me a sec...

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

"With the removal of the headphone jack in the Galaxy S8, Samsung users will face the same drawbacks iPhone users have had to deal with since September. There will be no way to charge and listen to music at the same time without a special adapter"

Not true, unlike the iphone the s7 has wireless charging.

Consumers love wireless portable products. That's the reason the market is flooded with wireless portable speakers and headphones these days, both in the budget and audiophile price ranges.

This isn't exactly unexpected, but I think it has an unfortunate side effect for apple. With USB C as a viable alternative ready now while everyone is matching apple by removing the headphone jack, USB C may emerge as a strong competitor to lightening headphones. The hope that everyone would switch to bluetooth may not pan out if USB C proves popular/good enough. We might be stuck with years of competing standards, dongles, etc...
