No one has these. B&H has them for preorder with first come first serve. Nothing on Amazon or Adorama. Can't order from Samsung. Newegg has them for preorder.

I guess saying these are now available was jumping the gun.

hmm.. looks interesting
2tb version may be on my wishlist
didnt even know of this device
thanks mr

Do you mind briefly explaining the difference between both?
Briefly, QLC is a newer technology aimed at lower the costs of manufacture, and has noticeable less lifespan than the older TLC. In the same way, TLC offers less lifespan than MLC nand, but it was cheaper to produce. I prefer a more expensive SSD if I will be able to use it for more years.

Compared to a fusion drive or a legacy HDD? Did you connect it with a Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 1/2 adapter?
I just have it plugged into my USB Port and selected it to be startup drive.

Hi when you said I use it with ly late 2012 iMac, do you mean attached to your iMac through the USB 3.0 port or you opened your iMac to replace the internal DD for the SSD ?
USB 3.0 and designated as startup drive. I actually have it tapped to back of my iMac to keep it out of the way.

Thanks for your reply.

And you see a big improvement through USB 3.0 VS fusion drive ?

It doesn't work with iPad Pro and you save $20.
appleinsider said this..
We connected ours to our iPad Pro, though the process is the same regardless of host device. When we first connected it, the drive was locked and a read-only partition is displayed with the SSD's accompanying applications stored. We then touched the fingerprint sensor with our finger after which the drive authenticated, unlocked, flashed the Motion LED, and showed up again on our iPad Pro with access to all of our files granted.

My iMac has HDD so I don't know how it stacks up against one with a fusion drive. But I'm very satisfied with external SSD performance as startup. I still use my internal HDD for data files and backup.

If you don't have a particular pain point regarding your current fusion drive, then it is probably not worth the effort to switch to booting off an external SSD. Fusion works pretty well for most people.

Most of the people here using an external SSD are doing so because
- they need more storage OR
- the need portable storage OR
- they were booting off an HD OR
- some part of their pre-existing Fusion setup died.

They're not doing it because an external USB3 SSD is just so obviously better than a fusion setup that everyone should switch right away.

This looks good, while the form factor makes more sense for a 2.5-inch spinning hard drive.. it doesn't make sense with SSD because :- (a). you have 90% space, and (b). their only chips,, so apart from the connector, the form factor can be narrowed greatly, i would have thought.

The T5 and T7 are significantly smaller than a 2.5" drive. The touch model is necessarily a bit larger than the non-touch in order to provide space for the touch electronics.
As you can see in this article, there isn't much extra room inside a T5. I expect the T7 would be similar although it uses an NVMe based drive instead of the T5's SATA based one. https://techreport.com/review/32396/samsungs-portable-ssd-t5-reviewed/

From the first post in this thread:

Samsung's T7 Portable SSD supports data transfer speeds of up to 1,050Mb/s. It's designed to work with all Macs and PCs, shipping with a USB-C to USB-C cable and a USB-A to USB-C cable.
Thanks. I overlooked that information on the first post.

Easy to do! I missed it the first time around, too, actually, and only because I went back later to see if they had mentioned the prices did I read the post more carefully.

Having both kinds of cables is really important, especially when people are making a transition from a machine with the "legacy" ports to the current USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports. I was very happy to have both kinds of cables back in 2018 when I was ready to transfer some of my files from my 2015 MBP to the 2018 one I had just purchased. Easy as pie: copied the files I wanted from the old computer with the USB-A ports, swapped cables, stuck the USB-C cable on the T5 and inserted that into the new machine and bingo!

Just ordered one from Newegg (1TB, Blue)... excited to see what it offers compared to the T5 (which has been rock solid).

I'm considering getting a 1TB T7 non-touch. Just checking in to ask if everyone who has one still loves it and there's no issues.

I still love mine and it has had zero issues. I have the exact drive you are considering in blue. It is currently on sale on Newegg:

Apparently it is on sale at Best Buy as well as Amazon.

Oh great to know that there's no issues. That blue is exactly what I'd like too. Looks gorgeous (well, as gorgeous as one might need a portable drive to look). I see it as $169 on Amazon so I'll check the other two places too.

Ah, so the same price all three vendors. Good deal!

I have two 2tb T7's and they are great! I have one permanently connected to my 2018 for data storage, and the second one is a bootable clone of the Mini's 2tb internal ssd. Also have a 1tb T3 and two 500gb T3's. They have all been great. Sorry, mine are all space grey (or whatever they call it) which is a good match for the 2018 Mini and space grey magic keyboard. 😂

FWIW, here is what I get with the T7 connected to the USB-C port. That is roughly twice as fast as my old T3's.

Was going to get a 2tb T5 for the backup disk, but couldn't find any a couple weeks ago. Back in June Amazon had refurb 2tb T5's for $275 and the T7 was $350. But two weeks ago, the new T7 was down to $300 which seemed like a better deal than a $275 T5 anyway.

That blue is simply gorgeous, isn't it? I now have the T7 in the blue and also one in red, as well. They are definitely faster than my T 5s, although not quite as fast as the X5. I like the colors because it makes it so much easier to have separate categories and to be able to quickly distinguish one drive and its contents from another.

I see Amazon has the 2TB T5 for $362 ... seems odd pricing to be higher than the T7 @$319 currently.

Yeah, I find ridiculous prices like that for old items all the time. Does Samsung still make the T5? Glad I caught my second T7 for $300, but paid $350 for the first one.
