I wanted a 4tb USB SSD a couple months ago for the 2014 Mini that I use as an iTunes server. If Samsung had one, that's what I would have bought. Since they didn't, I got an Oyen Digital 4tb USB SSD fro B&H Photo and it has been great. Performance is the same as my three Samsung T3's.

I’ll check it out. Thanks mate!

It doesn't work with iPad Pro and you save $20.
I can confirm it does work on iPad Pro with the fingerprint reader. Connecting it will show the drive within Files but won't actually mount until you unlock with your fingerprint

Nice to have the encryption since iPadOS Files doesn't have FileVault unlocking capabilities yet

Edit: Apparently it is TLC, although you can find the opposite on the web. Not sure but they are FAST.

I have two of the previous generation, one 500 GB and one 1 TB, they are impressive products, totally recommend it. They are fast even on the iPad Pro, external drives are particularly slow on iPad, but not these.
Yeah yeah, they can be fast, but for me longevity > speed. Anyways TLC is good for me, I would be worried if it was QLC though.

Thank you!

I have a T7 touch and I have issues with disconnects, especially in bootcamp. It's not a reliable drive to try to run games off of.

Arstechnica has tested most major SSD players on the market thoroughly including T5 & T7 family, caldigit tuff nano, sandisk

Both Samsung and Caldigit ones are performing very well. Caldigit's nano performs the best and most solid according to the research.

I've been doing same thing.Works great on my Late 2012 21.5 iMac

Hi when you said I use it with ly late 2012 iMac, do you mean attached to your iMac through the USB 3.0 port or you opened your iMac to replace the internal DD for the SSD ?

Literally just had a T7 Touch delivered this morning from Amazon. Backing up music files to it as I write this. Love it so far, noticeable speed difference from my T5.

Are you sure? Looking at the product pages for the T7 and T7 Touch, neither specify compatibility/incompatibility with any iOS devices. Also Samsung is currently offering $20 off the T7 Touch, making it only $380.
Various people have reported T7 Touch not working with iOS devices, such as this one.

Since T7 is new, it's probably not as heavily discounted as T7 Touch. But in time, you will probably save more. And even if the savings is close to nothing, I would probably take T7 over T7 Touch. Fewer things to go wrong.

If you require encryption, however, I can understand the appeal.

Substancially cheaper to buy a USB 3.x enclosure, and a good SATA SSD and put them together in the 2-5 minutes it takes to install them. Available in any size/brand you want online (Newegg, Amazon, etc), and ready to go in just a few minutes.

And it will fit in your pocket and have the same portability ?

SATA drives are both slower and physically larger than the T7.

Well, darn, I was so hoping that with the T 7 there would be increased capacity, such as 4 TB!!! I love my T 5s and have several of them but really, really was anticipating that the T 7 would go to the next level, not just in speed but in capacity. Guess that's not going to happen yet..... In the meantime, I've been more than happy with the T5 and also the X5 Thunderbolt 3 NVME -- both are plenty fast enough for my needs and I'll continue to use them as I have been. I love the portability of the T5 drives, and they travel with me easily, taking up very little room in the computer bag.

I am glad to see that now they're offering the three colors in each of the three capacities, which is convenient for those who have several drives and need to color-code for whatever reason (say, image files are on the blue 2 TB, movies are on the red 2 TB, etc.).

When reading the description, I notice that they have also worked on dealing with heat, which is good -- sometimes when I've been doing a lot with a drive, it can get pretty hot to the touch.

I imagine that the faster speed will be beneficial to those who like to use these external SSDs as their boot drive, and also for those who like to be able to put their image files right on the external drive and edit their images in there rather than on their computer's internal drive.

Same. My 2012 iMac’s FusionDrive died and I didn’t want to open it up so I just plugged a T5 in and voila. It’s been running great for the past couple of years like that.

Same happened to me on my 2014 iMac 5K. What they don't tell you about Fusion Drives is that the SSD part sees a lot of read/write wear because data gets migrated onto and off of it so much. Perversly, the spinning hard drive inside mine was still going strong when the SSD part hit about 10% lifetime left...

I’ve been using their 4TB model for years on USB-C waiting for an 8TB upgraded model that never came so finally bought Micron’s version and performs just as well.

Sure you’ll get faster performance with a Thunderbolt-3 enclosure but I’ve never seen one that doesn’t require AC power.

yeah, I was surprised it was the SSD that failed. I managed to split the drives in Terminal and the hard drive is still working fine as a Time Machine drive.

It's great how cheap SSDs are getting lately. I'm looking forward to the day multi TB ones get cheap enough for me to banish my loud Time Machine Toshiba HDD to hell where it belongs.
