Samsung's Upcoming Galaxy S10 Smartphone to Feature Infinity-O Display With Hole Punch Cutout

Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship smartphone was spotted out in the wild today, with leaker Evan Blass sharing an image of the new device.

Rather than adopting a notch like many other smartphone manufacturers, Samsung is using an edge-to-edge display that features a small camera cutout at the upper right side of the device. Aside from this circular cutout, the rest of the smartphone's front side is taken up by display area.

Samsung is able to use a single camera cutout for the S10 because it is housing less equipment than Apple's latest iPhones. There's no TrueDepth camera system with multiple sensors that include an IR camera and dot projector in addition to the standard front-facing camera, so Samsung is able to introduce a smaller cutout.

In the tweet, Blass calls the S10 the "Beyond 1," which is one of three S10 smartphones Samsung has in the works. As explained by CNET, the Beyond 1 is expected to be the same size as the Galaxy S9, with a 6.1-inch screen and a single front-facing camera.

Rumors have suggested other S10 models (at least one model will be larger) will have two front-facing cameras, so the cutout on these devices, which has been seen in renderings, could be a bit bigger. At least some of the Galaxy S10 smartphones are expected to feature a four-camera rear setup.

Samsung's Galaxy A8s smartphone also featured the same hole punch-style design that's seen in the Galaxy S10, with the camera located at the top left of the device.

Rumors suggest Samsung will debut the Galaxy S10 smartphone, which will compete directly with Apple's latest devices, the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, ahead of Mobile World Congress in February 2019.

It's not known if Apple will be able to follow in Samsung's footsteps with such a small camera cutout, but we have heard an early rumor suggesting Apple's 2019 devices could feature a slimmed-down notch, and there's even been a rumor indicating Apple is working on a smartphone with no notch at all.

Curious to see what they do with the status/notification bar sitting right where the hole punch is.
 
I was one of those people who mocked the iPhone X notch and found it quiet ugly. I am now one of those people who almost never notices the notch when looking at my iPhone X.

I am on the Hole Punch is ugly bandwagon but like the iPhone X, things may changed when viewed in person.

Those are just renders, final product might look different, but I agree, they didn't manage to even center the charging port for almost a decade, let alone other things.

With notch, you at least know where is the inactive area of the screen, there where it bothers you the least. Imagine this hole with video playback, apps and games, it can stand where it annoys you the most.

You still have to remove the notch. The all iPhones will look dated again after MWC in Barcelona. All the top models from manufacturers are coming with all screen OLED and better specs than Apples iPhone. On top of that they will be cheaper than an iPhone XR. And Cook is blaming the trade war with China:rolleyes:

Proof how far he’s gone from reality :cool:

Why is there still a bezel and chin?

I wonder the first phone with dual displays. The front can be totally clean, 100% screen, the back side could be like half a display, so you can do selfies. Then you only need higher res camera on back no need for front camera.

I’m no fan of the notch personally, but this is even worse IMO. Even more galling with all the fuss Samsung made about the notch in their advertising. My preference is thin bezels, just big enough for the cameras, etc. A bit like what LG did with the V30. At least until the sensors can be put behind the display (an idea I can’t get my head around but apparently it’s coming and sounds awesome!) Just my 2¢

Looks alright, but without the other stuff that Apple is housing in the notch, these phones will never compare to iPhones when it comes to authentication.

Also, the camera hole reaches further into the display than the notch and in return you get a few useless pixels above the camera. Makes no sense.

The notch has been the superior design decision all along. Apple got it right once again and everybody else is taking a few years to realize.

I like this design a lot. Neat, tidy, out of the way, clever design. Unlike Apple's crap notch design. Apple has come up with the useless Touch Bar, rubbish quality FaceTime cameras in the laptops, small laptops not for pro use (17" MacBook Pro was the best) bent iPads, still no Mac Pro, will it appear in 2019? Still no new iMac, poor sales of iPhones, higher prices for everything. Yes, well done Timmy Cook. You sure are not worth the stupid millions you are paid. The worst product range, worst quality products, most expensive, not as though Apple were ever cheap. A long time Mac user, but now, feel so sad, where Apple is going and how it is being run.

Simple, Microleds are tiny, don't know the exact size but most of the display would be empty space, think I read somewhere it would be more than 99% empty space, so simple for light to penetrate through the display.
 
I guess its okay, although not centered and asymmetric boundaries all around the display. Since they aren't going for 3d face detection they only need a camera hole up there presumably. It'll be interesting if this is where Samsung drops the headphone jack (the s10) or not - expectations are they will.

Presumably when playing video's it'll black out the top boundary line across encompassing the hole. I like Apple's better or a centered camera notch if that is all that is needed. Guessing this is not going to light a fire in s10 sales for Sammy (they have the Chinese makers, for the most part, to thank for that).
