I've got an XR and don't mind the notch. However, I don't understand the almost phobic aversion to any kind of bezels. I personally think it would look better with a black area on either side of the notch displaying the same information as it currently does (time, signal strength, battery, etc.). It looks gimmicky to extend the display all the way to the top when almost every app doesn't use that space anyway.

The hole punch is no better. The OS is going to have to treat that as exclusive space to avoid an app trying to display something important in that area.

Just give me a bezel and be done with it. It would look cleaner overall.

What is the unlock security feature? Finger scan under the display or on the back?

Edit: just watched the pictures at bit more in detail...still think I prefer Face ID even if this infinity display looks pretty interesting

Simple, Microleds are tiny, don't know the exact size but most of the display would be empty space, think I read somewhere it would be more than 99% empty space, so simple for light to penetrate through the display.

Thanks for the info :)

Would there need to be some computational processing to ‘ignore’ any pixels that were in frame or would they be invisible if turned off? (Please forgive my naivity when it comes to this!)

If so, would the camera ‘appear’ when in use?

They can already make glass that turns opaque when an electrical current is applied. I imagine Apple is already working on something where you can just turn off the pixels on the screen so all the sensors can 'see through' the glass. When the sensors aren't needed or in use then you can turn those pixels back on for a full screen display.

Samsung are already working on that. I hope Apple are too.

So this is the “innovation” that Apple supposedly is not doing? LMAO

If you want wrongdoers to have a better chance of capturing your personal information, buy an Android phone.

1. How is this any better than a notch? if anything there is even more wasted space with this design.
2. If you can't get rid of the bottom bezel, what the point of a notch or a whole?

I've seen it already at Huawei/Honor View 20.

Yuck. Have loved my Samsung phones, but I think I prefer the notch over a hole in my display. Maybe I'll go back to a simple phone and iPod Touch combination.

It remains to be seen how it looks in person. The devil is in the details and how well the final implementation looks.

But at least someone is trying to ‘think different’.

Terrible design, no balance, no symmetry and poor aesthetic. Unbelievable.

I was one of those people who mocked the iPhone X notch and found it quiet ugly. I am now one of those people who almost never notices the notch when looking at my iPhone X.

I am on the Hole Punch is ugly bandwagon but like the iPhone X, things may changed when viewed in person.
I still notice and would rather not have the notch on my xr.

I'm sure we will look back on both the notch and this 'hole punch' as the horrid design compromises they are once they are both eliminated. I'd take balanced bezels over either. And I do.

This is even more fugly than the notch... Yuck. I'll stick with the S8 until they come up with something good.

I don't mind the asymmetrical bezels - in fact it's kinda handy to be able to see which way is up (if the big hole in the screen wasn't a dead giveaway). Bigger bezels like on the S8/S9 are also just fine.

people here will **** on this.... until Apple copies this... then it will be the best thing ever!!

remember the countless talks about how big phones are stupid... before Apple increase its size?

This is not attractive at all. I'm not sure how I would feel about the hole punch if the rest of the phone looked appealing, but as it is... I'm not feeling it.

If Apple copies this it’ll still look like crap. Also, it was Steve Jobs that said big phones were stupid and many people were patiently waiting for Apple to make the jump to bigger phones for years, which is evidenced by the massive sales they had when they introduced plus-sized phones. People still hate the iPhone notch ... and many people hate that so many are now copying the notch. It’s not a design aesthetic that people desire. This stupid punch hole is not the solution and maybe Apple will be the first to figure out how to make a true edge to edge display with no notch. It’ll certainly set them apart from this new ridiculous punch hole thing.
