You may be a cop, I won’t know that so that’s why I said “you”.:) But if you are not a cop “you” the royal you is a figure of speech.

Not going to discuss distracted driving you can go to iihs, nhtsa and many other researchers to get additional information.

There isn’t really aren’t many circumstances that handling a phone whilst driving for purposes of reviewing information on the screen is acceptable. (Maybe a 911 call or navigation might be an exception)

All of this is related to using your phone whilst driving which related back to device unlock methods of android vs iOS. Again there probably is only a narrow sliver of circumstance where it is or should be legal to handle and look at your phone while driving regardless of the operating systems.
The op did say that they considered Face unlock whilst driving unsafe.
Android is much safer re phone unlock whilst driving.
Btw, it's the royal "we" and "one" :)

Please explain how android is safer re phone unlock. That you even have to unlock an android phone is a distraction.

Btw, there is the royal “you” as well.:)
Android has Safe unlock which keeps one's phone unlocked in the presence of the cars Bluetooth. If one so desires.

Never, ever heard of the" royal you". The royals say "one"

I can do the same with my iphone, keep my phone unlocked.

But that begs the question, why would one need to keep a phone unlocked other than to look at the screen, which we have already discussed as being unsafe. (except I postulated maybe some few exceptions)

But I am not keeping the phone unlocked, the Bluetooth signal is. And the phone safely locks again when I leave the car. But you knew that.

Oh. We are going down this road again. My wife asks me to take her to a location I don't know. I say "OK Google, navigate to White Stuff, George St." All without taking my hands of the wheel or looking at the phone, or stopping the car. I then get audible directions to the location. All without pre-arranging for my phone to be unlocked.

You purposefully sidestepped the point, but you knew that.;)

I guess we are going down that road, but voice controlled navigation is available on my iphone as well as my car. So what again is the point? Oh year, it seems you need your android phone to be unlocked to use navigation?

Now about that ugly cutout.

Navigation is only one of many safe uses for Google Assistant whilst driving. We have been down this road before.
But apparently some people find smart assistants "extremely annoying".

What ugly cut out?

I have nav in my car, so I don't NEED to use my iphone. I was only mentioning that I potentially CAN use the phone.

What ugly cut out?
I fully admit "ugly" is subjective.

I also have navigation in my car and it inferior to Google Maps. It has a clunky interface to enter destinations and cannot be updated by the user. Fee to service dept for new map data. I am sure newer cars will be better but my car is by no means old.

Making calls and sending text messages are also super easy compared to cars hands free interface to phone. Especially when phoning ahead to a shop or tourist destination that isn’t on my phone.

If cutout refers to S10 I am not sure why you ask me but I don't like anything other than a perfect rectangle. Huawei P20 Pro has a small notch which I disabled and screen either side of notch is dedicated to system info. So no wasted screen. I expect Samsung will allow option to disable notch with top of screen to left of hole permanently dedicated to system info.

My nav is better than google maps (imo) as well as more display options on a bigger car size screen. In addition, I can send and receive texts through my nav unit as well as talk to a concierge service when I need something more personal. As a driver my phone is relegated to where it should be. In my pocket where I don't have to interact with it.

YMMV as well as your use cases.

As far as the Samsung notch, we won't know much until the reveal.

My milage can be shared by over a billion android users in the most basic of cars with Bluetooth. :)

I usually buy each years S series Samsung phone as well as the Note.

I'm seriously thinking of skipping this years phones because of that hole. I don't mind the notch on my XS Max but this is just something I don't think I'll accept.
