Nobody is holding the manufacturer responsible. However, they have provided this feature. Why the hell would you worry about it or turn it away???

I do not for the life of me understand those that are complaining about this.

Every article I've read about this is holding Apple responsible for preventing theft of cell phones. Maybe the people who say this or write the articles don't know squat and rephrase the question.

You guys are completely missing the point. We are talking about a phone, something that doesn't have door locks or steering wheel locks or alarms on it. Stopping theft of a phone is a damn near impossibility and it's absurd to hold the manufacturer responsible to preventing theft of these items.

Cars didn't start out with any of those things back in the day. Then they gained door locks to deter theft. Then they started gaining alarms, and steering wheel locks, and more recently immobilizers to further fight and deter theft. Passcodes are the door locks on your phone, and now they are adding an immobilizer.

The folks in this article, if they are holding Apple to anything, is the accuracy of their claims. Doing tests like this now is the best time to do it. Before it gets into the wild and the cost of fixing bugs in it gets more expensive.

For the purposes of this discussion it is irrelevant since if you have activation lock on and you downgrade the phone is still activation locked.

Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, the activation lock does go into effect if you do manage to downgrade. So it doesn't matter, the lock is in place either way.

Doesn't matter what the article says, the fact is that before the articles were written, Apple had an offering in the works. The articles and the gov't involvement came after the fact and seems backward at this point.

what about return of lost phone?

Ok so this is great.. you find a phone you cant use it for your self as you should return it to the proper owner.. but how? they need to have a simple way for someone who found a phone return it to the owner. I have found a few phones and luckily the people were smart enough to call and I returned it to them. but some people turn their number off right away and put it on a new phone. Sometimes you just cant wait to have some return your phone and go a day or two without one but there still needs to be a way to have say the phone either call the persons new phone or ATT Verizon etc need to setup a way to return via a lost and found system which im sure they do not have in place.

What's wrong with you? You cannot prosecute thousands of stolen phones.
Go outside and learn something about the real life..
This isn't the 'real life'. This is the life of a country where gov/police can't prevent and fight the crime. There're other places in the world where real life is very different.

This may be true, but they still get stolen. Door locks? Please. I can get into pretty much any car on the road in under a minute. Believe me, it's easier than you think.

Right. You may be able to break into a car just fine, but all the systems I mentioned serve to deter people from committing the act in the first place. That is all laws do, they are designed as a deterrent. Nothing in life is guaranteed. Just like this security feature, it is a detrerant.

"113 smartphones are stolen or lost in the U.S. every minute and users are most likely to lose their device at a fast food restaurant or grocery store. In fact, phone thefts are said to account for 40% of all New York City robberies and nearly 70% of all cell phones stolen on subways and buses are iPhones."

Source: Protect Your Bubble.

This doesn't particularly make me want to visit the US. Is iPhone theft really that high? In inner city Sydney and Melbourne iPhones are so ubiquitous that nobody would look twice. Muggings are also very uncommon so far as I'm aware. The vast majority of people can afford an iPhone subsidised through a contract if they really want one, and if they can't then they probably wouldn't know what to do with it or care for that matter. I find beggars to be annoying but at least the addicts and homeless are pretty tame for the most part.

I should know, I've tried to (inadvertently) lose my iPhone many times but through the power of Find My iPhone have always got it back. This includes leaving it on the bus, at the counter in a bottle shop and many other places and no one has ever taken it.

I wish more things had GPS location tracking because I'm far more likely to lose something through my own stupidity than have it stolen.

sounds like a great way to hustle the phone companies and waste tax dollars.

Ronnie: "Hey man, wanna buy an iPhone for $100?"
Steve: "Sure!"
Ronnie's Girlfriend: "Hello, 911, Find My iPhone says that my iPhone is at this address"
COPS: "Give us the phone!"
Steve: "I bought it from Ronnie! He had the passcode and everything!"
COPS: "SHUT UP OR U GO 2 JAIL!!1"

Ronnie: "Hey man, wanna buy an iPhone..."

That makes absolutely no sense. Just because I can afford to replace an iPhone, doesn't mean I shouldn't take every precaution to prevent it's loss....and that includes technology the manufacturer can put in place to help prevent it's loss. Your statement is ludicrous and irresponsible.

It does make sense, if i can afford to replace them every once in a while then why bother with the security side... Im just going to get a new one anyways, PM you a few links of me buying new 32GB iPads from apple and destroying them :D

Get a decent job and then you will have money to burn :D

I have more than a decent job. I have money to burn, I'm just not stupid and wasteful to do so.
