Definitely need to get rid of the 16gb it just doesn't make any sense
The 16 Gb is a business phone, and 16 gb for a business phone is more than enought... as you would not put music and or store pics in int and you would mostly have business related app...

Now would it make sense to have a 32 gb as base ? Yes, do i see Apple doing it? No cause they can drive people towards the mid tier this way.

are you for real liking that disgusting protruding dual lens camera setup? lets hope that is fake/or prototype
And a month after release people will be screaming they can't get their 7 fast enought and how beautiful it is...

256GB would be a good step, but I'd actually want 512GB and even bigger options (on iPhone too, but especially on iPad - because it's 2016 and if they seriously want us to consider these devices as "Pro" and standalone computing devices (not some "real computer" extensions), I want them to fit ALL of my stuff, instantly available: ALL documents&files, ALL pictures&videos, Spotify premium playlists etc.). And yes, I use cloud heavily (I actually have paid iCloud and Dropbox for Business services, and connection is also not a problem with unlimited 400MBit/s fiber optics at home & unlimited LTE on the go). I still want all of my stuff readily available offline and the cloud in parallel as full sync/backup solution.

PS - I agree with everyone about the embarrassing 16GB base storage. If Apple will still do this with the 7, at this point it will be truly pathetic. Beancounter Tim.

It would be nice if they phase out 16GB. 64GB should be the minimum with new tech.

Until recently, I was only using 15 GB on my iPhone. It ballooned to 27 GB when I decided to download a few hundred hours of podcasts. Once I listen to all of that it'll go back to 15 GB.

I can imagine a lot of people living with 16 GB just fine. I have a 128 GB iPhone right now - I'll save the money on my next iPhone and get a smaller hard drive.

I could see Apple offering the following configurations for the 7:

iPhone 7: 32GB, 64GB, 128GB
iPhone 7+: 32GB, 128GB, 256GB

32GB isn't a ton of space and allows for more upsells to 64GB to maintain average selling price. At the same time gets rid of the 16GB starting which is terrible from a user experience and bad PR. Apple does need to balance that with average selling price to maintain margins. iPhone does make up most of the revenue.

The Plus is already $100 premium to the regular iPhone, so making another jump to the second tier of 128GB makes Apple more money and creates better value for consumers.

I think the 256GB will be saved for just the 7+, but I think it should be a 4th option for the regular 7. Why turn down more money from people who don't want a bigger phone?

As far as is practicable, but if there is more space available in the Plus, there's not really a reason to hold it back just to maintain parity with the 7. Same with iPads and Macs; it will always be possible to offer more on the larger units.
The 256 memoray is said to be even smaller than current 64 so this isnt a reason

16, 128, and 256 GB storage options, here we come!
I really doubt Apple will wish to sacrifice their margins like that. 16GB, 64GB, 256GB would be much more realistic.

It's stunning that the article doesn't mention iPads, which received the 128GB option 19.5 months before iPhones.

I set up my father's new 16GB 6Sa few weeks ago, as a new phone. Right away, I checked the storage. There was 11-point-something GB available. The usable space on a 16GB has now dipped below 12GB, making it closer to 8GB than the advertised 16. If the 7 doesn't increase this base model, I will be shocked. Sure, some people can "get by" with 16GB, but is it because 16GB fits their needs, or are they altering their usage to work around the storage?

IF (and that's a big IF) Apple gets rid of the 16GB base for the iPhone 7, I predict there will be a 32GB base for the 7, with a 128GB as a second-tier model, but no 3rd tier. The 7 Plus could be 32, 128, 256.

Man I wish stuff like that would happen. Well, maybe just a 'boo' no need for throwing stuff. But those people there very well know that they sometimes get crap presented and they still applaud like hypocrites.
Couldn't have worded that better!

being an apple fan, I still find it funny each year when people joke about the possibility of the new iPhone still having 16gb as base storage lol
Your use case is different from mine. My 16Gb iPhone 6 has 5.2Gb of storage on the device available.
For people like me, 16Gb is fine.
For others it isn't and I respect that. If apple were to drop the entry level device I'd probably keep my current one for another year.

Made me pay 100 more without missing a beat. If that doesn't make sense to you, you don't own AAPL.

What is Apple’s obsession with thin in regards to their products? Sure light elegant design is nice, but at a certain point you start compromising features in order to accomplish this.
Lightness is a feature. You sacrifice one feature for another feature, that's called design.

It's just a shame that joke's been accurate since the 3GS :(
Many people do not need more than 16..if it allows Apple to offer a lessor priced iPhone and people want it, whats the problem? I buy the 128 gig and I hear all the time how no one needs that much storage!
Why do we care what business model apple uses?

Yeah but they're obviously not going for lightness, since they made the 6S heavier while shrinking the battery, and the Plus is heavier than the S7 edge by a large margin with the same screen size. Magnesium would have been the better material if they truly wanted lightness here. I think the thinness thing is mostly coming from Ive, though.

Yes but the new ipads will have the same specs 9.7 and 12.9 so why not the same for the iphones. They only do this bc people aren't complaining. I could even see them doing the 7plus with 32/128/265gb and the 7 with 16/64/128 to even more force the people to buy the bigger one. As long as people don't start a sh*tstorm on apple they won't change their strategy of course.

Probably because with the introduction of live photos and higher megapixels that "16GB" holds even less content than it used to. Also, many major manufacturers have been using 32GB base since 2014. I'm 2016, the price difference is so small between 16GB and 32GB that the only remaining reason to hold back is greed. Yes, 10$ or whatever it is over millions of phones does add up, but again... greed.

Relative lightness compared to other possible iPhone designs including a Taptic Engine. And yeah, the iPhone 6S isn't lighter than the 6, because it's also not thinner. iPhone 7 is rumored to be up to 1mm thinner again with a larger battery.
