It's not about the cost of the two options. It is about the end user experience. It is always going to be a better user experience to not manage storage at all (or hardly), and use what is built in. So that is what Apple insists upon.

No, Apple insists it's consumers (whom you believe are all idiots that can't manage storage on an SD card) buy new iPhones when they run out of storage. Apple can make the experience of using external storage great if they wanted to. But, it's purely a money-making decision not to do that.

Exactly. Google didn't even encrypt external storage until some KK release or another. Plus how do you explain to the end user that "oh, you can't do it because your popped out the card." It's a support nightmare.

Really? "A support nightmare"? Like a thousand stupid things in iOS aren't already a support nightmare! Here's a novel concept--if you're too dumb to know how to use external SD card storage, just don't put a card in! You know, an OPTION for some people?

I've seen people "manage storage" on their computers.

Some people ARE idiots when it comes to file-handling :D

Apple just needs to enable using iCloud over cellular.

I have a 20GB data plan, with rollover. I don't have to worry about data caps. Why the heck isn't there a button I can push to sync my photos to iCloud Photo Library over cellular? Or back up my phone? I can understand not making it automatic because that could use a lot of data. But a simple button that says "Sync iCloud Photo Library (342MB cellular data will be used)" would be amazing.
It would. I have grandfathered unlimited data. There were a few places Ho in mountains though where I was stuck for days without wifi or cellular. So I'm always glad for as much onboard storage capacity as I can get, especially since I'm more likely to be taking pics and vids when traveling. I won't use 4K video recording even though both my iPhones are capable of it because I worry about storage capacity.

You know what I really want? More iCloud Storage. Sure, I could upgrade my 200GB to 1TB, going from $2.99/mo to $9.99/mo. But what happened to that $4.99/mo 500GB option? I'm almost full on my 200GB, so I hope Apple has some iCloud storage announcements for September because I'd rather not pay more than three times what I'm paying now since I wouldn't be using it all. Those 4K videos have really sunk me! IDK why Apple won't let us easily switch video quality from the Camera app. There used to be a toggle for slow-mo speed that they removed at some point. Right now there's a friggin 4K button that doesn't do anything! What can't I tap to toggle between that and 1080p? I like having archival footage of family sometimes, but other times casual videos I don't care as much. Having to dig into the settings app each time means I just don't do it.

This reminds me of DropBox pricing.

You get 2GB for free... but the only other plan is $100 a year for 1TB

I need more than 2GB... but I certainly don't need 1TB !!!

Who buys this stuff!? For starters the hardware looks awful, like a tumor growing around iPhone. And software wise I suppose you get a Dropbox like application, where you can put in some extra stuff. It's not like an additional hard drive in a computer.

I'm on a family contract so I would pay $499 for the most premium model.
Not sure how that deal works (most telcos I am familiar with will get you one way or another for the full cost of the phone), but there is still a significant difference between $170 and $499. The point being that if you are happy with your phone but just needed the memory and battery upgrade, this is a cheaper option. Of course we don't know what the new iphone will look like or what features it will have (rumors aside of course), so maybe Apple does wow us this fall and this becomes totally moot.

Well I want them 5.5 inch screen since anyway, so this case will be useless in about 3 months.

Yeah, a quick check says I'm only using 8% of my Dropbox. Heck, I'd even pay $6/mo for 500GB (a $2.25 discount and a reduction of about a quarter for half the space) just because I don't even come close to using it. But I think they do that on purpose. They know most people only use a small amount, probably because broadband just isn't ubiquitous enough now (especially with mobile caps) to move around gigabytes of photos and large directories easily. It's all about looking like a good deal and getting people hooked into storing things in the cloud so that as broadband gets even faster, they'll be sending around huge files and Dropbox will have better infrastructure in place.

I wish iCloud Drive had more features like Dropbox. The app is so bland when you go into it. Just a bunch of folders with a few controls to move and sort. Can't even rename! No recents, no offline access area to keep frequently used files, no sharing via link capability, and no capability to share folders with family, friends, or clients. If it had more parity with Dropbox then I might use it more for that and wouldn't mind paying for the 1TB tier.
