Yeah, I think FinalCut Pro X is awesome. It's a rebirth, not a new iteration. People need to give it time. There was no reason to leave Studio 3 to begin with unless you felt Avid was offering something better. Still not sure that Adobe's stuff is ready for primetime yet.

Most of the articles I hear about people moving to Adobe tend to come from the position of, "well all my work flow is orientated around Adobe so why not go the full monty?" - was the overhaul of FinalCut Pro X simply one in a long line of considerations rather than it being a single issue? I'd say that is the case given that most businesses aren't just going to make a decision within a few weeks.

Actually the two Xeon lines are for
a) dual-socket systems
b) systems with more than two sockets.

Tons of dual-socket servers are built with what you call "workstation Xeons".

The point was that whether it's a single-socket, dual-socket or higher-socket Xeon, it's the same CPU between workstations and servers. The motherboard will account for any differences, such as RAM slots and size and PCIe slots and speed.

Sandy Bridge includes the AES instructions introduced under Westmere.

Thanks for the info. It'll make it easier to recommend the i5 to security-conscious people and save them some money (I do a lot of PC consulting and advice).

Intel Core i7-3960X and X79

Looks good for the 3930! :D

It is disappointing that the higher tier chipset versions will not be available immediately, and what is available on the low end is somewhat limiting. Anybody building a larger server configuration mboard will need to add controller chips.

3rd gen PCIe also not ready, also disappointing.

Single-CPU single-thread performance is pretty equivalent to previous.

So, what is there to like? 40 PCIe lanes. And, much higher memory bandwidth configurations available. Configured to the max, 2X the memory bandwidth. Compared to the first-gen Sandy Bridge, this will significantly enhance some multi-core professional apps, although, it probably will make zero difference to most consumer apps.

I need a new Mac Pro - now

I'm using 2 Mac Pros from 2009 --- and waiting for a new release.

It seems as though I have been waiting for a long time..... while watching hype about new iPhones daily.

Does Apple remember its Pro users?

Have you read the thread at all?

Apple will release the new Mac Pro when they get their hands on the chips. There is just under 2 months before the official launch to go.

AFTER the 15th November we can start moaning that the MP 2011 is late. Not before.

I am also waiting for the next Mac Pro.

Does Apple get early access since they are a preferred customer?

As part of contract/price negotiations or if they pay for it maybe. Apple don't need to rush them out people may hold off buying older /current models, but they are still going to buy Mac Pros.

Their past history is all over the place:

06 model was 6 weeks after Intel's launch, maybe they could have had it a few weeks earlier rather than wait for WWDC..

07 model was just the addition of a high end processor that Apple had acquired most of the production of.

08 models came 8 weeks after launch, Apple bought all the initial batch of faster higher-end CPUs releasing systems 2 weeks after Dell started shipping systems based on the slightly slower ones, 1 week before Mac World and before everyone else.

09 models were a month before other companies NDAs even expired.

The current 2010 ones came like 6 months after the processor launch.

---------------

All we really know is Intel's date and that Apple is very likely to use them and tends to release within a couple of months, other than that it is a waiting (for a Tuesday) game.

Or to add some detail:

07 model was just the addition of a high end processor that Apple had acquired most of the production of because no other company wanted to use it.

The 3.0 GHz that Apple used was an "extreme" bin of the existing Xeon processor, with the TDP raised from 120 watts to 150 watts.

Intel's roadmap promised a new stepping of the Xeon, that could hit 3.0 and higher at the 120 watt TDP.

Other vendors decided to pass on the 150 watt chip and wait a couple of months for the newer 120 watt version.

Since Apple's cheese grater was designed to cool the nuclear heat from the PPC G5, Apple had no problems taking the less efficient chips.

Oh we do this every year do we not? :D

Love the "nuclear heat" description!

And if I have not previously stated, I agree with your sig lines re the 9th Circuit . . .

Haswell 16 core IS a 256-bit processor..see here

AVX2 Intel link: http://drdobbs.com/blogs/open-source/231000372

No Sandy Bridge E is NOT full* 256-bit...just has the 2 bi-directional 128 bit addressable buses.

2013 is the scheduled deploy date for Intel...programmers get ready to compile 256 bit code (even if they skip giving you 128 bit compilers)..oh well.

Does Intel have any optical chips that Apple could use (excluding any POWER7 conceptual stuff IBM has up on a shelf somewhere) see:

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/bits/2010/07/28/intel-claims-optical-computing-milestone/1

If Steve was still actively running stuff (and not considering joining the
protests on Wall Street with Michael Moore)..we might have been given some
nice hints about Apple getting some "optical stuff Intel has back in the lab"..
that IBM promised Steve..but never delivered on.

Did we ever get a REAL G5?

Some say NO see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorola_G5_project

Ask the people at Motorola. They say what about our new 6500 core
QorlQ chips? See:

http://www.freescale.com/webapp/sps/site/overview.jsp?code=QORIQ_AMP

Some of the chips that IBM has were never vended as workstation capable
but were introduced as server quality include the POWER4,POWER5,POWER6
and the 'finally out of the lab' POWER7. See:

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/1532674/power7-vs-nehalem-ex

IS Tim Cook the answer? Can he get the 'Intel Alliance' to work for Apple
when past history was "bend over and take it Apple"?

iPhone 4's and 5's might be the answer. Mobile computing needs the 256-bit
addressing much more than your desktop..or bank server does.

WW

*( Sandy Bridge E ..i.e. the "i7's"..does have some avx code and can emulate
a 256-bit AVX chipset:

November 15 was last Tuesday. No new Mac Pros. :(

It's been a month since the MBP got a small processor boost. Maybe this month they'll give the mini or iMac a similar update.

There are several tax reasons why it would help a studio to have a Mac Pro update ready to order before the end of 2011 ....

I remember my MP G5 - with a cooling system that could have worked on my Audi A4 ...

So what are the odds of an update? Basically anybody's guess at the moment? I really hope they're updated in the next 2 months at least. I need a new system before I edit a feature in mid-February and I don't want to buy something now with something possible coming.

My worry is some sort of disaster redesign where I'll be fending for an older model somewhere online instead of buying the new.

With the way FCPX turned out, I wonder just how in tune they are with the needs of pros anymore.

*fingers crossed*

You don't want to replace your Mac Pro with an "Ipad Pro"?

That would be magical....
