4GB of Ram is a Must for BTO MBPs. 2GB is no longer good enough if I plan to keep this computer approx 3 years.

Also, Same with a Beefy Videocard. Nothing over the top, but if this thing is going to last me. It should be something current. Even if its a mid range card.

Yeah, I would expect for the MBP at least 4GB at this point, and a fairly solid card.

MBP soon

I would expect it to be soon because of Apple's back to school offerings. 2 years ago they started on July 1 which is the traditional date. Last year they started in the first week of June. You usually get a discount off of an ipod with purchase of an Apple laptop. Now with that deal it usually goes til mid Sept. Apple can not wait that long to bring out a new MBP and they would well be behind if they did. I expect something at the maximum by WWDC but am expecting something before June 1st. With Dell and Lenovo already having announced their new systems and getting them out to educational pricings, Apple can't be far behind or they will miss a lot of sales. The real question is will the iPod be new or the same old 5G for the special :)

you guys are out of your minds if you think apple is going to stick 4gb of ram into mbps in default configs. as far as i know, the current mbp has a maximum of 3gbs of ram, and i dont see them changing the default from 2. 2gbs runs OSX incredibly well, and it would cost apple way too much to include that much ram. also, dont expect a high-end video card. apple is notorious for using under-powered video cards in their laptop lines.

oh, and dont forget about that apple premium ;)

Good point I didn't even think of that. Back to school sales keep getting earlier so it would be wise for them to prepare.

As far as iPods go the back to school sale leads credibility to the new iPod theory. Giving out free or discounted iPods helps them clear out their inventory of the old model. Last year I got a 30gb iPod under the deal and then a week later the 5.5G ones came out but you could only get a 5G with the deal.

Just thought I'd post.. Apple insider is collaborating the rumor and saying that a speed bump is coming (which would mean Apple is using some portion of Santa Rosa, either the chipset or CPU)

Bah what about the Imacs. :(

I'm with you.
But, I think there could be two reasons the iMacs are being overlooked in this Santa Rosa hype.

1. People see mobile processor and Apple so they automatically think Macbook (pro).
or
2. ...iMacs are going full desktop CPUs!

Just trying to stay positive.

Do you think they'll at least upgrade the video card to something better than the current x1600? Even if not the highest-end GPU out there? I hope they at least allow an option for up to 512MB of video RAM.

Assuming they do allow up to 4GB of RAM, how much do you guys think the price difference would be between 2GB and 4GB? Right now it's I think a $517 difference between 2 and 3 gigs (after student discount). I might just get a 2GB model and then upgrade to 4 gigs when necessary if it supports that. MBP's allow you to easily replace RAM, right?

I never said default. If you read my post it says 4GB BTO.

Yes, I suppose 4GB does make more sense as a BTO option, especially given the limits of 32-bit Tiger, but then $2499 seems a little steep. Maybe an LED-lit display will make up for it?

[not to mention that simply being a Mac is priceless]

You do realize what this means, don't you?

POWERBOOK G5 NEXT TUESDAY!

New Video Card for MBP and iMacs?

So with the Santa Rosa release, Nvidia also released new graphics cards (Geforce 8M series, DirectX10, i know, it's windows, but games are unfortunately made only for windows). Any chance we'll see them in the MBP and iMacs when they are updated? The current cards are over 2 years old after all.

I'd rather see this in a MB as the big change there will be the new Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics now offer DirectX 10 support and have a higher allocation of VRAM--up to 384MB(hopefully it wont be limited like apple is doing on the current MB gfx chips).

I just speced out a Lenovo 14" t61 for $2344. Think this is a possibility for the $2499 MBP?

-C2D T7700 2.4 GHz
-4GB RAM
-Vista Business [insert OSX here]
-Discreet nVidia graphics (quadro nvs 140m) [I'd hope for an nVidia 8-series]
-160GB 5400 RPM Hard Drive [maybe apple can toss a 160GB 7200RPM our way?]
-1GB Intel Robeson "Turbo Memory" Cache
-DVD Burner
-Intel 4965 AGN Wireless
-Bluetooth
etc...

If these are indeed the specs for the new $2499 MBP, I'd just buy it right off the shelf, no custom order required!:D

I read somewhere that you get blu-ray drive when you get GFX card on T61 I dont see it listed there. And what is this 1GB Intel Robeson Turbo Memory? Is that ram?

Never. 4GB of RAM of a stock. Not in your life. Thats a really good deal. Never going to see it on a mac in this decade.

Yeah that Nvidia seems nice. Double the power efficiency! That means longer movie watchings. Speaking of efficiency:

"The Gateway E-475M, with a 2.2-GHz T7500 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive, and a 15.4-inch LCD, takes the top performance spot with a WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 83. That's one point better than the previous WorldBench 6 record holder, the Micro Express NP5760, equipped with a 2.33-GHz T7600 chip. The E-475 also beats the Micro Express handily on battery life, lasting 5 hours, 17 minutes, versus less than 2 hours for the NP5760."

HOLY COW!! Fastest and with more than double the battery life, damn!

Yes, esp since the ATI-AMD merger. I think Apple would now lean on Nvidia graphics. The apple TV currently has a better video chip than the Macbook. Heck the iBooks had better video.
That's the only reason I have no purchased a macbook.
