More or less. More less than more.
Santa Rosa is the new chipset that will include for example NAND flash, 802.11n, etc.
Penryn is a CPU. The first Santa Rosa notebooks will most likely come with the latest Merom processors that go up to 2.4GHz. Santa Rosa will use a socket P connection, the same connector Merom uses.
For Penryn they will use a new platform and chipset known as Montevina and Cantiga. This new platform will ship in 2008 and will increase the frontside bus speed to 1067MHz and support for 800MHz DDR 3.
It will include a new wireless module called Shiloh, which is expected to support WiMAX (802.16) in addition to HSDPA (3.5G).
Darn, I thought I had done better than "more less than more."
So, just so I'm clear (mas o menos)...
1. Merom and Penryn are CPUs, correct?
1a. Do the CPUs have nicknames (e.g. San Pedro) also or do they just go by names like Core 2 Duo T5200?
2. Santa Rosa is a chipset that will come out alongside of (wording???) whatever Merom processor is available and installed in June-ish.
3. The first chipset that will accompany Penryn will be Cantiga, which is part of the Montevina platform (which also includes Shiloh and Boaz).
3a. The Montevina platform, 5G of Centrino, will support the Penryn CPU, whatever-eth gen. of the Core 2 Duo processors.
4. What the heck is a chipset???
Thanks for the help!

p.s. Diatribe, I like your guide for beginners. I've been using OS X since early 2005, but I always recognize that there's a ton that I don't know...even simple things. I've learned quite a bit from the guide and exploring the tips and software discussed there. Thanks!!!
