Sapphire Home Buttons Coming to New iPads?

Let me guess, this year's new iPad mini will have a retina screen but no Touch ID, which they will put in the next year's update to differentiate it form this year's. :/

This is what I completely expect. I would be totally shocked if the Mini received both the retina and TouchID this year, the way I see it the top of the line iPhones and iPads will get the newest features every year and the Mini and C-class iPhones will get it the following year.

I think it's only a matter of time before it's not only on the iPads but also laptops and desktops.

I think that will be the case, just due to the sensor being so new and them having a limited supply (so the higher end devices get it). Once they are able to keep up with the supply (I would hope by next year's product releases), then all iOS devices (maybe even Macs?) will get it.

It depends on whether or not they can get both into this year's model without compromising somewhere else. Apple doesn't want to raise the price, or alter the form factor, or lower their profit margin.

I expect they're going to disappoint those who are willing to sell a kidney, a child, or their soul if they can get it all now.

Touch ID and sapphirehome button will trickle down to iPad 5 while the new iPad Mini will get the regular home button so it will align perfectly with 5s and 5c..

Next year all the iPhone and iPad line might get Touch ID

I hate to say it but it's so predictable

its going to be an expensive fall - I might upgrade the family ipads if this, and the a7 cpu in ipad are true.

having seen the size diff between the new ipad and mini, I think the bigger screen is worth it - especially since it is not that much bigger.

They need to just include all the features on the mini unless they are considering going plastic with it…price points be damned. Just release the best product you can.

Really? A new feature on the iPhone that might carry over to the iPada?!?!?

The next thing you'll be talking about the iPada getting retina displays, processor changes and more...

That's just cRaZy talk!!!

To report this after the iPhone adopts a sapphire home button is utterly meaningless.

DigiTimes = the opposite of information. It's like a random 8-ball that takes pride in the few times it's right. And they like to claim info on things that are the same educated guesswork any of us could make from our armchair.

Make the screen out of whatever you think is best... home button too... but I sure hope the iPad (at least the full iPad 5) gets the fingerprint sensor now!

In the end, all iOS devices will have it, of course. And the mini will have retina eventually. (I'd be amazed if it's this year: the GPU and battery challenges are not small.)

I strongly disagree. There's been rumors that there are bottlenecks here, and Apple will need a reason to charge a premium for the full sized ipad.

A sensor on the mini would not make much sense.

I would be shocked if the new iPad models and even the iPod touch models don't have Touch ID. For what it does right now, they have just as much use as iPhones do. Plus when you flood the market with a feature you made, it makes getting developers to support it much easier. That's not the case now for Touch ID, but if the plan is to open it up in the SDK for iOS 8, that means another however-many million iPads and iPod touches that get sold in a year to support new functions.

You think? Touch ID will hit every product eventually.

Makes total sense, but those expecting it on the next iPads, due to hit us in Oct, may be disappointed. Apple is reportedly having a hell of a time securing enough of those sensors to supply the iPhone 5S production lines.

Seems like a no brainer for Apple to have a top of the line iPhone (5s) and iPad(9.7") both with the fingerprint sensor right now for corporate clients(as well as obviously for the consumer market). Let the iPad Mini and iPhone 5c be the less expensive/not as secure/not as profitable/not as powerful devices.

Can't wait for a new Mini! My iPad 2 days are done!(nothing wrong with it, just feels like holding a brick now after using the g/f's Mini constantly).

A little? What the f...
Dude the future is here man! If people can't see the huge potential for this in the next 1-2 years you are so blind.

I could see this being huge for parents who want to control the amount of time their kids use on the iPad. I know of a coworker who's kid is addicted to Minecraft and he's only like 7 or 8. Not literally addicted but plays it probably too much.

Businesses that use an iPad instead of a big clunky cash register can now not be worried about having a $500+ device sitting on the counter. Want it? Go for it and steal it, you won't be able to use it.

Minor convenience of not having to click home screen and then swipe. Now just put finger on home button. I bet after using the fingerprint sensor to unlock going back to the old way will feel so wrong and slow(yes, probably only a 1/4-1/2 second slower but still add that up over couple years).

It's only a phone. No more, no less.
