I understood "Apple accessory" to mean an accessory for an Apple product; not necessarily an accessory made by Apple. Perhaps my command of the English language is incomplete, considering that I'm unfamiliar with the word "pedantic."

The vast majority of users never have anything more than the power cord attached to their computer. And on the incredibly rare chance they do need to connect something else, the 12 hours of battery life the MacBook offers is more than enough time to attach that other device to get their work done.

Do you honestly believe Apple didn't do their homework here and just randomly makes these changes simply because they feel like it?

I currently have an external keyboard, mouse, USB headset and monitor plugged into my laptop. So does everyone else in my office. Maybe grandma and grandpa, or the hipster who spends his entire day at Starbucks writing poetry while listening to Mumford and Sons don't need multiple USB ports, but most people in the professional world do.

Yeah looks like a massive design flaw.
If there is a massive design flaw here it's not the the hub it's the MacBook! If you need more than a hub then you shouldn't bought the MacBook in the first place. So stop blaming others go complain to Apple maybe they'll make you a better accessory.

Why are chipset manufacturers having such a tough time coming out with a pass through? There was a Kickstarter for a hub that failed because they couldn't find a chipset that worked well and provided pass through. You shouldn't have to sacrifice charging your laptop to plug other devices in.

I know, it seems absolutely ridiculous. But apples AV Adapter works with passthrough...I am in disbelief its taken going on a year to have a nice USB hub for the macbook. The Hub+ looked amazing, they cancelled it due to a lack of a USB 3 chipset that worked up to their standards as I understand. They are also talking about releasing a mini version of the Hub+ with usb 2.0.

Wow. Where did your rude snarky response come from? Do you not have a strong grasp on the English language? If you said "an Apple accessory" I'm going to assume you meant an accessory that Apple manufactures and sells.

Some people really make this forum a toxic wasteland.

Grammatically, it can mean both. But the post DOES say it wasn't made by Apple. So one would comprehend it as not made by Apple, but an accessory for a Apple.

The point I made was I'm surprised at how cheap it is compared to other brands who have similar products.

I still can't believe the macbook only has the one port. I understand the reduced dependence on plugging in, but there's no reason Apple couldn't have had one on each side...

I don't mind the one port, but why on the left side. They should make a version on the left for left handed people and one on the right. I hate having to use my left hand to plug things into it when I prefer using my right. No pun.

If it doesn't sell well because of a lack of USB-C through charging, I hope the conclusion by others (especially Apple) doesn't turn out to be "This didn't sell because people only wanted one port to begin with!"

The Satechi has no USB-C pass-through. This functionality will be available in de Satechi-S version, available for pre-ordering exactly 1 year from now.

I was reading this article thinking, "My god this is exactly what this notebook needs. Did I make the wrong call getting a retina 13" this summer? Then I got to the bottom and read there was no usb-c pass through and thought "Nope!" This thing is rendered useless without that passthrough... Still, for people struggling with their purchase of a MacBook it's better than nothing.

Apple, you undoubtedly predicted the future of mobile computing when you launched this thing; everyone expects this to be the notebook of tomorrow. But you seriously couldn't have thrown on ONE USB port???

This is why the Apple digital adapter exists. It's a single cable docking station. And it means you don't have to carry those ports around with you when mobile.

Yes there is. There was no way to technically make those ports have parity - both be able to charge, carry 5Gbps of data, both be able to drive a 4k display. You'd have one full featured port and one crippled port.

I for one am glad Apple is pushing people to rely more on wireless technologies instead of plugging things in like a caveman. I get that some people need ports, then this isn't right for you. Remember, just because it isn't right for you, it doesn't make it universally bad. That's insanely egotistical thinking. Many people hardly plug in accessories at all.

Why do you plug those in?????? It's 2015... only the monitor makes sense. And this computer wouldn't be right for you anyway at that point if you insist on ancient wired accessories. Do you need some stone tablets to write on while you are at it?

The new MacBook does not offer 12 hours of battery life, it offers 9 hours of "web browsing" and 10 hours of "iTunes movie playback". Sounds like you are confusing the MBA 13" with the nMB.

There was a 9to5 mac review that the guy got seriously less than that using it as his main computer, I think somewhere below 5 hours.
