It's sort of a circular problem - vendors keep making usb-A ports because people still have a lot of legacy hardware that needs it, and as a result companies still use usb-a and micro USB cables because they are cheaper.

When buying new electronics these days I try to always:
1. Get something with lithium ion over NiMh batteries (surprisingly a good number of devices still use NiMh) and
2. Prefer USB-C over USB-A, though even this is a pain. A proprietary wireless charger I just received with a $500 dive computer just showed up with micro-usb... ugh.
I don't say stuff like this, but, micro-USB just needs to die. The only other connector I hated as much was Firewire 800. It was a big old honk'n plug hanging out the side of my '06 MBP, just begging to fall/be pulled out. 😉

it's like everybody is using Windows because everybody is using Windows.
we know better, but still.

I never understand why Apple only put ports at the back on their deaktop Macs, making it hard for people to actually plug stuff in.

Because it's a much cleaner look. I've personally never had an issue with it because my iMac isn't in an enclosed "cove" area or somewhere else that makes the back highly inaccessible. But if it were, I'd simply use a hub. So I like that they default to the clean look, since people can always add a hub if they want, but you wouldn't be able to remove built-in ports on the front (if you didn't like the cluttered look).

I love these Hubs.
Had one on my 2013 iMac and bought an USB-C model for my 2019 iMac too.

I have no idea, how one can work without it.

I hate ports on the backs of machines, though for lesser used ones it's not a big deal. Would be nice if iMacs had at least a single USB-C port on the side of the screen for quick thumb drive access.

Wonder what this would look like on a colored model (I have blue). Very tempting.

I think I'm most worried about what it might be blocking on the bottom edge. Looking at the iFixit teardown, it looks like there might actually be a "dead spot" where the thing mounts where it's not actually blocking anything, but I'll await some further reports on this.

I'm really surprised that they're only offering it in silver. That's probably why they're only showing it in photos with the silver iMac.
Probably kind of a production nightmare to do the colors, though. First, they'd have to match the colors exactly right or people would complain. And then second, they'd have to try to predict how many of each color to make -- and if they get that wrong, they're either caught short on a certain color and/or overstocked on another.

I would like this if the USB-A ports were on the back. I can see maybe USB-C on the front and definitely the card reader on front.

I wish Apple would just do this to begin with. But a lot of their products are design over function now. It's so frustrating to have to plug in my portable drive to the back of the machine.

Ok, so all these mac users here want to have all the ports facing toward them on their minimalist machines, huh? Yay Apple minimalist design it's so elegant, but actually, could we get the entire IO on the front? And more ports on iPhones and iPads too? If Apple products were designed by comittee of their own users they'd just be beige PC boxes from the 90s till today.

I still don't understand why Apple couldn't have just left the USB-A ports on the iMac like it was before. With all the rumors of Apple bringing back certain I/O to the portable line, it makes no sense why they would take ports away from the iMac. Honestly, less ports on the MacBook makes more sense than on the iMac. My guess is they will reserve the ports for the higher end iMac and brag about it being a feature over the entry iMac.

I'm gonna be the contrarian and say this kinda sucks. Why is anyone still dealing with USB-A? I swapped out all my cables for USB-C ends years ago. Every time something like this hits the market the future comes a little more slowly. And who wants to look at that logo all day?

Looks like good construction, though. They've got very decent industrial designers.

This is so ugly, I'm shocked at the enthusiasm for this. Why would you buy a beautifully designed computer to attach this gaudily branded wart to the front of it? Just buy a Mac Mini with a Dell monitor if that's what you want.

I understand the need for easier access to USB-A/USB-C/SD... why not get a normal USB-C hub with a cable long enough to route down the stand onto the desktop?

I own one of their base station/stands for my M1 Mac Mini, and, while the utility of an extra USB-A (to take the dongle for my Logitech MX Keys) is handy—yeah, I get you. 100%.

Their design team is making the best of a bad situation—except that logo. As a designer I'd *often* told customers, "no one will ever be as excited by your logo as you are." Within the context of a machine like this, I'd say subtlety is valued.
