Here's the hoping 2015 brings that..... I'm also hoping that ApplePay 2.0 rolls out with a merging of loyalty cards and what not, the rumors flew that Apple was going to release that early, but I guess that was a dead rumor waiting to happen.

Passbook as it is currently is almost good enough depending on the card. My Walgreens card shows up as a notification on my lock screen when I'm near my local one, for example. Tapping loyalty cards would be nice though.

If it was just the Save Mart news, then yes it would have been a blog post (if we even covered it all). But we thought with the BofA adoption numbers included it was a bit more interesting.

If you guys don't post info like this on the front page, there's a good chance I'll never see it. I wish you guys would put up more news articles per day. If people don't want to read an article not pertinent to them, they can just scroll past it. I'm incredibly thankful you posted the article about the NES emulator which I snagged before Apple pulled it. Thanks for all you guys do, and keep up the good work.

Well I mean I wish it's could like BUNDLE it; cause at Walgreens for example, they scan my loyalty card, THEN I have to NFC my payment, wish it could all be contained there in one touch!

Here in Southern California I've also been able to use Apple Pay at:

Stater Brothers (grocery chain)
Petco

Interestingly, while Subway claims support, I have found a lot of their shops do not yet have NFC terminals in place.

clarification on google wallet

Does anyone know definitively if that means Google Wallet can be used there as well now?

I'm wondering if accepting Apple Pay automatically means Google Wallet as well. The hardware should be the same so I'm assuming accepting Apple Pay means the terminals are Google Wallet capable but I'd like to get some clarification as to if accepting 1 necessitates accepting the other now.

Current C

I think it is being (or was being) beta tested in parts of Wisconsin or somewhere in the Midwest.

Here's the support doc:

http://support.currentc.com/

Thanks For the Info, I heard it was being tested in Minnesota by Target employees. From that link you provided I was able to determine that Target Red Card debit/credit cards plus ACH are payment options and I attached the login page (by invitation only).

walgreens and starbucks

Yeah Walgreen's implementation is pretty messed up. I find that I end up spending just as much or even more time checking out there with or without Apple Pay. I'm already opening up my wallet to pull out my loyalty card so pulling out the credit card isn't a huge deal but now I have to also pull out my phone to use Apple Pay. Walgreen's screwed up.

Starbucks is using a QR code in their passport app to do payment. It's an interesting concept in that it DOES pop up on the notifications when you're close to a starbucks and it IS just scanning the phone for payment. Unfortunately it's just a bit more annoying then Apple Pay. For one.. at a minimum you have to press the button and swipe on the opening screen to get to the QR code and I keep missing the notification because my fingerprint triggers a transition to my regular icons which means I need to find and run the passport app to get to the starbucks app. Another problem I run into is that notifications for starbucks pops up by mistake a lot and that's very annoying. On the other hand I can load up my balance with starbucks gift cards which I can buy at a nice discount.

The SaveMart by my house (near Sacramento, CA) has had NFC enabled on their POS for the past few months. Pretty handy!

Utah Apple Pay

All of the locally owned grocery stores I shop at accept Apple Pay now. It's great.

Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas were some of the test markets for SoftCard, formerly ISIS, so a lot of the hardware was in place.

I think 2 or 3 credit unions, GoldenWest, Mountain America in Utah have announced support (forget the third) plus Zion Bank is looking into it. Along with Wells Fargo, of course.

With Chevron coming along, you're probably in an Apple Pay hotspot. Not that I'm jealous.

Some time ago, there was an IBM ad on TV. An obvious parody criminal - black and white stripes, costume party mask, etc - walked into a store and pocketed a bunch of stuff and walked out, then a guard tapped him and said, "Excuse me, sir." and then a pause, "You forgot your receipt."

This is asymptotically close to that. I went to our local Lucky today to buy one can of a particular cleaning product. I went from the aisle, to self-checkout, scanned the can, did the Apple pay ritual with the phone, then tapped "finish and pay," "credit" (so as to avoid having to enter the PIN), and "Amount OK." That was the entire interaction. Well, that and not forgetting the receipt.

The terminals at our local Lucky are now sporting an ApplePay and Google Wallet logo on the attract screen.

Just wait until NFC gets hacked big time and people are hemorrhaging money out of their accounts. I still think NFC used for anything involved with money is a nightmare waiting to happen. Cash is still the easiest in my book.

NFC has nothing to do with the security of ApplePay. It's the fact that the device account number is special to the CC backends. They won't authorize any transactions against that account without the special per-transaction public key signature. That means that there will be no hemorrhaging unless someone hacks the secure element in your phone. And the cost:benefit ratio of doing so is prohibitive. You and the merchant could conceivably exchange the transaction details over bullhorns across the parking lot and it would still be secure.

Interesting. The indie stores had machines that took Google Wallet before Apple Pay came out. Now they take both. I'm in south Utah County; not really a hotspot for much. At least we have Apple Pay.

Google wallet and Apple away are both NFC. They'll both work anywhere NFC is taken (look for the NFC pay logo). Just try it at a vending machine that takes it. Works beautifully.

Kroger is taking a wait and see approach, although stores owned by Kroger like Harris Teeter support all Contactless payments, but the main Kroger stores have the MX915 with nfc off, its quite weird, but I'm sure they will also turn on Contactless in time. @serendip7 it shows Apple Pay, Google Wallet, and Softcard on the screen at Save Mart now, I saw a picture posted by mrcobra92.

Well I can't get it to work, only AMEX is working. Softcard and Google Wallet work fine, though MasterCard and Visa Apple Pay don't. Anyone else had any luck? Also here is the picture mentioned above.

Getting Kroger (well, their subsidiary in my area......) on board would be a plus, but I've been doing more shopping over at Target lately. Target, BP and/or Quick Trip then are those I'm waiting on.......

Apple Pay threads don't get as many posts here as they used to, it seems. The next article from the Internet is probably going to be something like "Has Apple Pay Already Fizzled Out?" even though that's not the case.

Has anyone seen any reported figures on Apple Pay as of yet? It'd be interesting to see what percentage of the population is actually using this, and what is the current adoption rates. (I like statistics.)

As they say "Cash is King" and they're 100% correct.

Accepted everywhere, free from tracking.

When it comes to NFC, Apple or otherwise only a handful of geeks care.

Is it the future of payments? Only time will tell. If not for Apple's brand strength, this would be quite obscure.

The last big article I saw, was from Black Friday after Thanksgiving:

Apple Pay’s Black Friday, By The Numbers

According to it, only 10% of iPhone 6 users had tried Apple Pay at all.

And on that particular shopping day, only 5% used Apple Pay at stores that took NFC payments. The reasons they did not use it, included not noticing that they could, and simply forgetting to.

It's still new to most people, and old habits die hard.

Interesting read.
