I need help with a display conflict.
I have a powermac G4 sawtooth with the standard rage 128 card.
I was given a 2003 23” apple cinema display with DVI.
When i connect the display to my G4, i initially see the grey boot screen in osx tiger, then the screen turns black and looks like its lost signal.

From reading it looks like this card will not support this display. If thats the case, what is the best solution for upgrading to a card that will?
Thanks

Correct. The highest resolution the ATI Rage 128 Pro will output using DVI on Mac OS is 1600×1024.

You could look for e.g. an ATI Radeon 7000 (cheap and can be easily flashed).

That explains why I had the same problem with the 128 Pro and my TV. It would display the OS X splash screen and then go to black.

I've got one that I need to flash. I found it very easily on eBay.

Ok question will a radeon 9600xt agp work with a sawtooth g4
If it isn’t a flashed card: no.

There you go.

AGP 4× cards need to have pins 3 and 11 disabled to work in a Sawtooth, and some have ADC and VGA outputs so you need an ADC to DVI adapter for those too.

edit: The above paragraph is wrong. Disregard it.

As a Sawtooth owner myself (AGP Graphics model), the cards I recommend are the GeForce 6200 and the Radeon 9000, assuming you have an AGP Graphics model like I do. Get the 6200 if Core Image support in Leopard is the most important to you. If 2D/3D acceleration in OS 9 is more important to you than Core Image support, get the 9000 instead. The 6200 needs to be flashed, but the 9000 has an official Mac edition. The later Gigabit Ethernet and Digital Audio models may have different GPU options.

As of now in my G4’s , i have a radeon 9800pro in my agp sawtooth and 9000pro in my 1ghz digital audio. Id like to swap them around but i have an adc display that is still in fantastic condition that i like to use but i dont have the dvi to adc adapter unit.

For anyones info the 23 aluminum cinema display dvi will not work with the standard rage128 that comes in most early G4 models. Aside from flashing the best options i have found are radeon 9000 and the 9800 pro mac editions. Either seem to work great. I have not tested any nvidia options
