We went through this last year. Everyone upgraded and kept their grandfathered plans. Does that mean they will keep doing it? No, but that shows you that ATT doesn't necessarily kick out out of old plans with an upgrade.

AT&T is doing away with the unlimited data plan on any change to an account whatsoever....... A sales rep told me via phone that when it comes time to sign the new 2 year contract for the iPhone 5 there will be no unlimited data option for anyone that signs/renews a contract

How long have you been around. Could not be for long as if you are listening to a "sales rep" your not thinking!

Sales reps are the last to know any thing. People will hear about it here WAY before a sales reps will be told anything. If AT&T or Apple wants to keep a secret, do you think they would tell a sales rep?:D

I agree. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that at some point in the next few years all carriers will find a way to stop unlimited data. Verizon is already going to tiered plans.

It might not happen with the iPhone 5 on AT&T but it definitely will happen. I'd suspect at the very least we'll all be cut-off from unlimited data with the advent of a 4G iPhone (which may or may not be the iPhone 5).

I tend to think they will drop unlimited for about a month or so and after they lose tons of business they will introduce a new (very expensive) unlimited plan

To start with, everytime this gets brought up, NUMEROUS people state how they have never dealt with any slow down after 5gb. Hell, those stating the soft cap don't even really say themselves that their speeds slow down.

Also, 50%? Judging by the fact that so few ever talk about it here, I would say the number of people is closer to 5%

Then again, the % of people claiming that they experienced slow downs after 5gb here is probably...well, I have yet to see anyone

obvioulsy 50% was an exaggeration...at least I thought it was obvious. I see people say that ALL the time tho on this site and off.

Like where?

If it happens all the time, I am sure the posts won't be hard to find. And finding 1-2 posts makes my point for me...that it rarely if ever happens.

And like I said, many who state that the 5gb cap exists don't even say that they or anyone they know have been effected by it.

What makes no sense? Since I purchased the phone independently I would be able to keep my unlimited plan without actually touching my contract and giving up my unlimited data.

No, because if you do it that way, you have nothing in writing from them saying that they are obligated to provide unlimited data. Without a contract, they can change your plan.

I seriously doubt that's true.

They risk losing too many customers that way.

If the iPhone 5 required a new type of data plan "4G," it would make sense that you couldn't switch the plan over. As long as next iPhone is 3G I don't see this happening.

They'll lose me. I'll go to Verizon in a heartbeat, even if they don't offer unlimited anymore. It's BS to try to take away what i've had with them for years and years. If they try to.. bye AT&T.

Indeed. Even with a written contract, AT&T has always reserved the right to revise that contract at any time, and if the customer doesn't like it, their only recourse is to cancel their account.

So, the only thing that allows any AT&T customer to continue to receive unlimited data, under contract or not, is reliance on AT&T's good faith.

How much data do most of you use a month? Do you really NEED the unlimited?

I kept mine just because I thought it was BS to have tiered data. Now I'm not so sure. I still have my unlimited plan but don't use more than 1GB a month. I find myself using my iPad now for most heavy data stuff. Videos mainly.

Just curious.

It wouldn't surprise me if they make iPhone 5 users switch to a tiered plan. Most carriers are going that way. Verizon is switching this summer... right? Hell, are there any carriers that offer an TRUE unlimited plan now to new customers?

Yeah Sprint does on their 4G network. Unlimited 4G service, 5GB cap on 3G. And yeah, Verizon is switching this summer. I'm sure they will allow grandfathering (for awhile anyway) but probably not on any iPhone 4GS/5 new customers.

Ah. I did not know that. I thought it was just a 5GB cap. Thanks.
