I wonder why it takes so long for Apple to give us what we suggested for years. They go through all these dumb iterations thinking they know better than other UX designers.

The what app now?
Code scanner, I don’t remember when it was introduced but it’s only been maybe 1-2 years that I’ve discovered it.

There’s a control center shortcut and everything.

Quite literally, open it, point it to a QR code, it will catch it at many different angles and auto open the link. I mainly use it for restaurant and parking payments.

Interesting. Kodskanner in Swedish, never ever seen before. :)

Sent Apple a white paper on how to create an audio QR code for podcasts and radio stations so that while you're listening to content and an advertiser's ad is being promoted the same little yellow box automatically comes up on your screen giving you an opportunity to click on it and find out more information. I haven't heard anything back from Apple but hopefully they'll start a new industry standard that others will follow.

While a welcome improvement, why have button at all?
Just aim camera at QR code and auto launch the site in Safari.
Or make that auto-launch feature a toggle ON/OF option in Camera settings.

Thanks Apple devs! This was a major annoyance, having it follow the code around the screen (and making the link super tiny) wasn’t the greatest idea. iOS 17 is looking better and better

In IOS 15 or 14?. it worked automatically. You scanned and it opened the link. Now the elegant solution is a 2 step process. All Android phones do it in a single step and nobody is angry at “hard to take photo of a QR code” (but we are at the hard to scan a QR code). That dancing of the code is proof that Apple executives does not use their products. 3 years or more to come up with that solution????.
That is in the QR scanner app, this is the camera app. You wouldn’t want it opening a link every time you tried to take a picture of someone and there was a QR code in the background. Also security would be a big issue.

I’ve always considered random QR codes an unnecessary security risk, having people tell me to scan a code even for a menu seems superfluous.

This is a very welcome change. I literally just spent almost 40 miniutes on the phone with my mother-in-law trying to help her scan a QR code on her TV to setup the new Max app. It was a true exercise in patience.

you can tell apple has too much power when small easy to implement obvious qol improvements like this take many years.

What they really should do is make the QR code scanning work when you’re on any camera view, rather than just Photo mode. I know so many friends family and clients who download a whole separate (sometimes even PAID) app because they find the built in option “ so unreliable” (not realizing that they aren’t in photo mode).

I didn't even know the photo app could scan QR codes... I've always used code scanner.

Uh, um, I’m running ios17 and tried to scan a menu the other day and had the same old issue. I didn’t notice any difference from ios16 to be frank.

Can you share the Apple Store link please? I can't seem to find it!

Yep, that what I use. Straight from the control center. It also auto launches. Not sure why you would use the camera and then have to click something.

It’s working like this on iOS 16 since ages.. articles written just to generate traffic
It’s a minor change. Currently it hovers under the QR code on screen unless you move away from the code then the link will move to the bottom.
In iOS 17 they’re saying it’ll just go immediately to the bottom even when the code is still on screen.

Again not a huge change, but one that makes sense. Not really anything to create an article of though.
