I hardly wear my Apple Watch because I’m scared of getting it scratched or getting it greasy. It’s kind of ruined my experience with the Apple Watch as I simply cannot bring myself to wearing/using it.

is anyone else the same?

No of course not. What a waste. Sell it and move on.

Or preferably, change your priorities and realise it’s just a bloody watch and who cares if it gets a scratch or ten...it really doesn’t matter!

You’re missing out on an incredible piece of tech for misplaced OCD.

Just enjoy it

I felt similar up until the point I started buying AppleCare+ for my Apple products. Now I use devices caseless and with no worries. The Stainless Steel model is also more resistant to scratches.

I get where you're coming from. But just like Donnation said...a watch is meant to be worn. It's an unavoidable fact...you're going to bump it on something. I scratched my watch screen on day 2 😂 Does it bug me? Yeah, a little bit! But it's a device that's made to be worn on a "bump-prone" part of your body. Can't avoid it!

This issue stems from the sunk cost fallacy (I think). The first mistake is to view Apple products as something with maintainable resale value (which they do maintain better than their competitors but at the end of the day it’s technology and technology deprecates quickly in value).

Heathier to view purchases as lost money in exchange for a device that provides function - not as something to maintain with the hopes of preserving for resale one day.

Is it your own OCD making it difficult to look at scuffs and scratches or is resale value you’re worried about?

I used to have OCD about imperfect looking personal property (cars, tech devices, etc...) but here’s how I see it now. You’re not the only one with an Apple Watch and it certainly isn’t especially unique enough to need it to be perfect. The only thing that keeps it unique from others with the same watch is the scars you’ve applied to it using it in your own unique way. Don’t look at the scratches as imperfections but rather a uniqueness that nobody else has.

My Apple Watch has a few scratches on it, but so do all the watches I have ever worn. To be fair, I would always take any watch off if I was going to be in a mud pit or doing an oil change.

I don't wear my watch (or any jewelry) while working on my car due to the tight quarters with many hard objects and all the grease. Other than that, I only take it off to charge. Remember, the watch has a limited lifetime anyway due to technology progression and/or battery life. My S4 aluminum may have more scratches already than my S0 aluminum, but I really don't notice them in use. Wear your watch and enjoy it. Remember, you could buy a new base model every year for the cost of one cleaning of a Rolex.

If you're doing this to help with resale value then you're better off just returning the watch. Even a used Apple Watch in pristine condition will not have good resale value. Apple Watch is one Apple product that does not do well in the resale market.

Were you a regular watch-wearer before you got this? The perspective on this watch is interesting. There are people who don't wear watches and look at this the same as they look at their phones and computers. And there are some who wear watches but look at this as more of a computer on their wrist.

It's a watch, man. It's meant to be worn. It's also a computer, and it's meant to be used. It's meant to be enjoyed. I used to be so concerned about this stuff that I bought a space black just because it was claimed to be the most durable watch, then bought applecare, then bought a screen protector. I was in the middle of reapplying the thing for the 6th time, and I had been attempting to apply it perfectly for an hour, before I decided, "This is ridiculous". Threw out the screen protector. Went a long time without scratching it and once the scratch got there, I didn't even notice after a couple of days.

Regular watches still get scratched. As long as they work, no issue. If it gets greasy then clean it. If it gets scratched, does it still work? If so, keep using it. A scratched watch that still works is a watch that is a survivor.

I wore a 38mm original Apple Watch Sport until I replaced it with a Series 4 40mm aluminum. I've been wearing an Apple Watch every day, usually for 16 to 18 hours a day, since July of 2015. While you can always find posts from unfortunate souls who somehow cracked or scratched their displays, the experience of many is that there isn't much to worry about. They are made to be worn and not worried about. I think the only time I take mine off out of concern for its longevity is when I'm doing yard work that requires digging in the dirt and handling a lot of seriously abrasive stuff (rocks, and the old concrete I find buried in our yard). I wear it mountain biking, doing the dishes, etc. I just change the band to a sport band when I know I'm going to be sweating and don't want to get my nicer bands messy.

If you're scared of your watch getting scratched then buy one of those cases on Amazon for about $20. They look tacky imo but they'll definitely protect against scratches.
Here's a case I found with about 30 seconds of searching on Amazon.

I’m not doing this for resale value, just because I’m ocd about my things haha
How about your shoes? What happens if they get dirty or scuffed? What about that shiny belt buckle? Wedding ring? People wear those non-stop! Your car? Those shopping carts, you know... like magnets right in to them.
It’s a watch, man. It’s practically clothing. Wear it and use it. Or don’t and get rid of it. But it’s useless to everyone sitting in a drawer.

I don’t know if you’re seeking some type of affirmation from other members to encourage you or something, but the fact that you have to post a thread about this is alarming. However, With all due respect, [As Im being sincere] (Also, I am very familiarized with your threads) you shouldn’t own Apple products, because you seem to over worry about them to a point where it’s completely unhealthy.

I’d offer you the same advice others are already, but it won’t make a difference, because you’ll have another thread started somewhere similar. It’s just not a way to live.

Try applying a screen protector and wear it. Nobody says you need to wear it constantly, but start little by little. These buggers are quite durable and if you get it greasy, just wipe it with a moist cloth. I wear my watch 24/7, except while charging or in wet environments. Yesterday, one of my dogs totally destroyed my screen protector, 5 minutes later I just applied a new one and here we go again :)

I used to keep the watch naked and didn’t really have any scratches on it but then I got one of those cheap screen protectors off amazon and now I don’t even think about it at all. So get a screen protector if you’re too concerned.

LOL!

Anyway....I try to do the same with stuff I buy. Keep sneakers nice and clean, actually untie them instead of slipping on an off. Hand wash a car, protect that iPhone screen etc ect.

But once the big scratch down the door happens, or after a month or so...my sneakers get scuffed and stay tied. The car goes through the automatic washer after a year, not very frequently. and so on....

I also try not to get sucked into the "saving it for resale" either.

Just use it normally because in 1 year you won't care about the current watch and will buy the new model anyway.

With all your postings about any Apple device you have, and asking if it can be damaged in a certain way,
you probably should get help :)

Is"s a consumer device, don't buy it if you can't deal with real world use.

Just stand up, take your Apple watch, and drop it to the floor, your first damage is always the hardest to deal with, from then on...Meh
