With that size monitor, a 13" will work nicely.

One thing not mentioned is whether his school offers any special deals. Some universities offer 4 year walk-in service agreements with machines purchased through their bookstore or computer store. Covers you the entire time. A colleague's daughter got that when she went to college. I know the University of Virginia offers accident protection (spills, drops, etc.) and provides loaners while being repaired.

I will have to check, I kind of wanted to surprise him with it , the. I realized just how little I knew about macs & figured that I should at least ask him what programs he was going to use. I knew about x code & the adobe suite, I did not know about blender 3-D

Wondering why the apple store does not offer 16 GBs on the classic MBP

Because when it came out(the first 16GB compatible models were made in early 2011), no such modules existed at the time. They simply never bothered updating the specs.

The classic MBP is on its way out. By next year or the year after that at the latest, I believe Apple will discontinue the cMBP, thus ending the age of upgradeable MacBooks. Its hasn't been updated since last year, so its probably being killed sooner than later.

16GB is overkill unless your son will be using more than one VM. Memory compression in Mavericks is pretty damn good, it will stretch those 8GBs very far before yielding. Unless its 2 or more VMs, can't compress that.
