Normally drink Johnnie Walker Black and Green Label. Macallan 18 is my favorite, but don't drink it too much because of the price.
Macallan cannot make a bad malt, in my experience. They're all exceptionally smooth.

For single malts...Talisker,Glenmorangie,Oban. 18yo Macallan is probably the finest liquid I've ever enjoyed...Islays,esp Bowmores, are like chewing on a chunk of peat IMO. Too much for my taste.
For blends..Haig and Haig Pinch is actually quite nice..

I had to buy a Laphroaig simply due to price; I thought "if it's this much more than the rest it must be good." It was ok for an Islay but I'm not sure I'd buy it again. Bowmore I couldn't stand.

I tried a lowland single malt a while ago, and it was too light headed tasting. Like it couldn't make up it's mind or something..

Lagavulin 16 - when I need to put some petrol in my blood
Oban 17 - easier drinking with a more manageable hangover

Just received a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15 year highland for my birthday. Tasty stuff! Like smoke and honey.

Been meaning to get another bottle of Talisker for a while.

I have barely touched blended scotches. I should spend more time with those, but I just enjoy the single malts so much more. I did buy a bottle of Johnny Walker Black for my father in law who is more partial to blendeds, and I didn't mind the couple of glasses I tried of it.

Lagavulin is excellent. I had a glass of Macallan 25. I thought I was going to die. It was $30 but sooo worth it.

I've been meaning to get some Oban and Talisker. I hear they are good.

ohhhhhhhhh i like whiskey!
but to be honest, my favourites are Irish, but i do like Dewars and Glenlivet.

in any case, i see some have posted non-scotch whiskeys, so here are my top favourites:

Bushmills 'black bush' and 10 years single malt; tullamore dew.
as far as bourbon goes then Jack Daniels or Jim beam (any kind).

and Drambuie, which i guess isn't what OP had in mind, but still great whiskey-based drink.

p.s: has anybody dried whiskey and (club) soda? i saw this combo on a TV show and tried it, and it wasn't half bad - but i still like mine neat or with just some ice.

When I drink, which is very occasionally...it's single malt only.

The McCallan (18 year old, not 25), Lagavulin, and for something lighter...Dalwhinney.

Straight up...never diluted with anything.:D

I drink brandy and rum but I haven't found a whiskey I like yet out of the admittedly very few I've tried. What is a good beginners whiskey to try?

At least for me, Scotch was an acquired taste. The first time I tried it, I thought it was awful, medicinal tasting stuff...and couldn't imagine why anyone drank the stuff. For reasons I no longer remember, I tried it again, and it began to grow on me. Now, it's the only hard stuff I will drink, and single malt only.

I would start with something fairly mild...perhaps a blended whiskey like Dewars, with a little ice. (I never put ice or water in single malt, but I don't think it makes much difference with blended Scotches.) My first single malt was The Glenlivet, which is pretty easy to take. If you want to try my favotirite single malt...it's The McCallan 18 year old. Also fairly light is Dalwhinney.

There are so many single malts, and many wonderful ones have been suggested here. Lagavulin 16 year old is wonderful...but I don't think I would start with that...it's quite...er...declarative!

Perhaps give Dewar's a try, or if you can manage it, the single malt The McMallan.:D

I like the Balvenie Signature 12 and Caribbean Cask 14. The Glenlivet 18 is also pretty good. These bottles are all around $60 ish (the Glenlivet is about $70ish) which isn't terrible relative to what else is out there.

I don't really have a top whiskey, though I like lots.

One of the cheaper whiskeys, 35 dollars a 5th, was from France, its called Bastille. And it blows away whiskey's that sometimes cost 80-90 dollars a bottle, that stood out for me recently.

I used to drink Scotch a long time ago--probably in the 70s--but have been mostly a beer drinker lately. I do enjoy a good Vodka on occasion but on a recent vacation--a cruise--I decided to try Scotch again--and wanted to try a single malt. The best available on the ship that I could find was MacAllen--I believe it was one of their 12 year products--probably their cheapest--but still the best Scotch I had ever tasted--ended up drinking quite a few shots during the cruise--very nice!:D

Ardbeg 10 year. I love me some smoky iodine tasting whisky.

Nice one. You'd like Talisker too. One of my favorites.

On a completely different tack, Arran distillery's Robert Burns single malt is a fruity, mellow gem. A great one to start with if you're new to this - or even old :)

I recently bought a few bottles of Glenlivet Nadura. Potent stuff.

Generally, I like all Islay Single Malts. Lagavulin is one of my favorites.
