I thought Facebook integration, the new Phone options, Shared Photo Stream and Offline Reading List were all nice.

If you look carefully, iOS 6 suggests a redesign in a way similar to Mavericks, some things were toned down and removed. I think there may have been a redesign on the way anyway. Like the dialer. The iOS 6 weather app uses a font closer to iOS 7 than the previous one.Image

It's questionable that Forstall would have keep the design the same.

Yep, a lot of people conveniently forget that there were more interface changes in iOS 6 than in previous versions of iOS. It wasn't the drastic remake that iOS 7 was, but it was certainly moving away from its glossy past. The music app, iTunes/App Stores, Camera, phone dialer, Maps, and Weather all received refreshed interfaces. I really liked the direction iOS was heading, and would've liked to see where Forstall would've taken iOS 7.

Looking back now, having used iOS 7 for a good almost 8 months, iOS 6 seems as archaic as OS 9 vs OS X. Quite strange really, the classic design was with us for 6 years and I never realised how dated it looked until I got my hands on iOS 7.
Windows Phone had a very similarly flat (and much better "flat") design since 2010. Did you consider Windows Phone to be looking futuristic in 2010, three years before iOS 7?

Saying that iOS 6 looks ancient compared to iOS 7 is like saying that Crysis looks ancient compared to Flappy Bird.

Couldn't agree more. These designs were fantastic and are a sign that Apple was going to evolutionise the "classic" iOS design at one point.

Windows Phone is nothing like iOS. The interface is much more 'flat', pure two tone colours, no gradients etc. And yes actually, Windows Phone to me was pretty futuristic in 2010, it was a fresh new view on the smartphone OS and I quite liked it. It is absolutely nothing like iOS 7 or iOS in general however.

And that comparison is ridiculous, if you don't like iOS 7, don't upgrade it's simple.

His point may have been over the top, but it's true. It's two different design philocifes and to say one is better than another is a very hard sell depending on the camp a USER PERFERS more. As to your comment of don't upgrade that choice isn't one apple lets the user make. I have a 5s there is no choice, also without jumping through hoops a user is held hostage of multiple gigs of data if they are still on iOS 6.

Let's try to avoid turning this post into a which is better post we have a lot of those already.

I will say I do miss iOS 6 very much and would love to see some mock ups from Scott on his vision of iOS 7 and 8.

ios6 was terrible at time of release, even the rippled water background image they used for it was boring.

Ah, so something completely subjective and pretty much orrelevant like boring means terrible. Got it.

Not simple actually when Apple has a huge security hole that they finally patch up and the only way to get the fix and actually be secure (for a device that supports iOS 7) is to in fact upgrade to the latest released iOS 7 update. Not that much of a choice any more.

If they just made Forstall in charge of iOS 7 instead of Ive, we would have had the best of both words without the stark bleak highlighted with bright colors of iOS 7.

It was relevant since it's in all their marketing. Also, notice I said "even" before that sentence...so that's not my only reason for calling it terrible. After 1yr of release, there's not much left that can be said about it. You can however brush up on your reading comprehension thanks, got that?

By both worlds, which worlds exactly you mean? iOS 6 and what else? And is there any real reason to believe that Forstall would all the sudden have decided to make visual design changes on iOS?

Mentining a (purely subjectively) boring (optional) wallpaper even as one example of something that makes an actual OS terrible, pretty much mostly only undermines the rationality behind even a possible argument to support that claim, that's essentially what I was pointing out. Reading comprehension is fully intact, so we are all good. Moving on.

I understand that IOS 7 isn't everyone's cup of tea (and was never going to be) but I think the loyalty to IOS 6 is completely misplaced. It just wasn't a good version of the OS - it introduced nothing exciting (unless you count Apple Maps) and the few cosmetic changes there were just kind of messed around with things for the sake of it, inconsistently and in a pretty directionless way.

At least with IOS 7 you can see there is a cohesive design behind in, whereas IOS 6 felt like someone (ie forstall) had just taken IOS 5, dicked about with a couple of apps, and hit publish.

I've some sympathy if you really hate the modern look of 7, but if you have to go back, go back to 5 when the OS was still true to it's origins. 6 was significantly more half-arsed IMO.

i kind of agree with some things you say about the improvements and changes from version to other until ios 6 but what i missed really is the clarity and smoothness of the whole OS also fast animations the details of graphics like buttons of music player for example but with IOS 7 every thing is the same style same colors icons has less details with very poor graphics , animations is good but need to be fixed and i am waiting for IOS 7.1 update hope to see progress

That's very easy to answer! Same as the previous 6 versions.

I'm pretty sure Forstall was planning to give iOS a redesign at some point. The changes he made in iOS 6 suggest he was interested in changing things. Forstall probably wanted the changes to be small and subtle like OS X over the years, but I guess others wanted a complete redesign immediately. Then there was also the clash in style between Forstall (skeuomorphic) and Ive (flat).

Tbh, i actually liked the simplicity and modern look of windows phone. And it's surprisingly smooth to use like ios. Too bad the marketplace was a huge letdown.

Yeah that's the biggest problem for me, the apps are simply not there or not up to scratch. The current notification situation is also a bit of a mess

I'm pretty sure they have a pattern, big update with new features or design, then a smaller update that optimizes it and adds a few new things and other small improvements.

Following this pattern, iOS 8 will be similar iOS 7 except with many of it's issues fixed.
Feature wise, iOS 6 and 7 are still quite close to iOS 5.
