I see; I would have said it was the display cable, but it's probably cheaper and easier to replace the motherboard first.

i have yet to see a damaged lvds cable, or problems caused by an lvds cable.

anywho, he said it did the same thing on the external monitor, ruling out being an issue with the mbp's lcd/cable.

So wait, are you saying Apple was replacing your logic board for free? Are you still under warranty?

Apple is replacing the Logic Board for free as they should since still have Applecare until June of next year.

I am having some 'good' bad luck with warranties in the last week. Applecare taking care of this issue, replacement Xbox 360 for RROD, portable HD died with a week left of its warrant so a replacement is on its way. I have to live a few days without my electronics, but no $$$ out of my pocket.

Is it still in repair? 'cause they told me my repair queue was going to be a 3 weeks long, so I just took it to a local authorized shop and the guys fixed my computer in half a day.

Still waiting for my local Apple store to give me a call that the part is in. After it is in I have 7 days to get my MBP to them. After I give them the MBP for repair it will be 3-5 days.

If Apple is slow on getting the part I am going to take it to the local authorized shop.

Wow, that screen shot with the pink gradient rectangle . . .

Wow, that screen shot with the pink gradient rectangle is EXACTLY what I have seen on my 24" iMac 2.16ghz Intel Core Duo. I am glad I'm not the only one, I will direct some people to this thread to explain my problems. I have had to replace the logic board twice under AppleCare.

Questions:
Are the people having this problem all using some kind of Windows emulation, i.e. BootCamp, Paralells, or Fusion? I ask this, because resetting the PRAM helps me for about a day or so to escape the problem. Resetting the PRAM (3 consecutive times) apparently resets the firmware on the Logic Board. I'm wondering if some kind of windows/Bootcamp/Emulation driver installed slowly messes with the firmware controlling the fans and allows for overheating. I'm no expert, it's just a theory.

Comments: i totally agree that if the problem was a cable, taking a snapshot wouldn't show the issue, the problem is definitely in the computer, not the monitor or the cable.

This is why you should always buy applecare. Of the the Six macs that I have had only two of them has never gone in for repair. I've had two drives replaced, three logic boards, one cd drive and RAM. Tip: Buy your Applecare on Ebay at almost a 40% savings. Unlike most Apple products, the markup on AppleCare is pretty high, and motivated sellers can cut a pretty good deal. Good luck, my iMac is going in next week again. :(

Apple did call but I couldn't go without my MBP during the repair and still can't. Need to wait until break to get it done, but the problem has subsided slightly.

No windows of any kind on my MBP ever.

Took my MBP back in to the Apple Store and had to have the Logic Board reordered for the replacement. Going to drop off my computer tomorrow morning and hope I get it back early next week.

It's only taken me a year to get this fixed and hopefully I don't end up with more problems.

iMac Update

Well, our diagnostic was right. I took my iMac in under Applecare and they replaced the logic board b/c the video card was bad. While they were at it, they replaced the screen which had three dead pixels (It came with three dead pixels and no other time did they replace the screen when it went in for service). Yea Applecare, nay apple video cards.

All is fine and dandy!

Just picked up my MBP this evening. Dropped it off on the 21st so a 5 day turn around isn't bad at all with Christmas being in there. Lets hope no new problems pop up now.

I have a problem very similar to this
I have a MacBook Pro 15.4inch 2.0Ghz 2gb ram with the ATI radeon X1600 256mb
I run windows Xp via boot camp and the fan on the right side had started to make a noise then would stop for a fews days then it would work again but be very noisy. Oh I am also running a Samsung 24inch monitor.

So the first time it happened I was playing PKR in XP but not with the extrernal monitor and I had to go to the loo so left the MBP on a cusion on the sofa when I came back the screen was covered in pinky diagnol lines and there was a ATI pop up box which I think said it had lost conection with the graphics card. the screen frooze and I had to reboot the MBP when it got to the gray screen the pinky diagnol lines came back and are there most of the time I boot my MBP somtimes it goes into OS X and is fine but some time i get the blue screen still covered in pinky lines and the MBP freezes but a reset will see it right.
these lines will show up on the external display when that is conected

When using OS X i can get on as normal I am a video editor and use FCP studio 6 and motion and really hammer the system
but when I use XP playing PKR or Wolfenstine then I get the pinky lines within 10mins of playing.

is my graphics card fried?

scrambled display lines

A couple of days ago, my MacBook Pro 17" mid 2008 suddenly put scrambled lines on the screen. When rebooting, the screen was somewhat scrambled and would not get past the Apple screen. After several attempts, it finally booted up normally. It repeated the same behavior today.

Is the problem my video card????
