Interesting. i was told u have to bring it in to be inspected if you didn't buy apple care when buying the ipad. I took mine in 2 days ago when i added apple care + and they barely looked at it..

If you go to the store to purchase AC+, the genius is supposed to make at least a cursory examination (device working, no cracked screen or obvious signs of trauma).

If you call Apple on the phone to purchase AC+, only s/n and proof of purchase is required. Quote from Apple's web site explaining there are (2) ways to get AC+:

•At an Apple Retail Store (if AppleCare+ is purchased separately from iPad, a Genius Bar appointment, inspection of the iPad, and proof of purchase are required).
•By calling 1-800-275-2273 (requires proof of purchase).

I pre-ordered my iPad and received it on launch day. I called last week and added AC+. All they needed was my s/n and credit card info (they already had proof of purchase, since I bought it direct from Apple.)

And "NO", my iPad is not damaged. I decided AC+ was a good value, given the combination of: (1) Extra year defect warranty, (2) Accidental damage coverage, and (3) Express Replacement Service. It also provides another 1-3/4 year of technical support, but why do I need that when I can find any answer I need on MacRumors? :)

The big scam will be dropping it before the end of the 2 yr period and then getting a new one to sell on eBay and taking the proceeds and buying the "New-New iPad" in 2014

According to the website, I need to have it inspected before they'll give me AC+

UNTRUE!

At least when I bought mine I did it over the phone with no inspection necessary. They even know via the serial WHERE and WHEN I bought it (Target in my case).

That's all you need: your serial # and a CC # and be within 30 days of purchase.

PS: There was nowhere for me to buy except via phone. I think Target offered me their own "protection" which I declined.

I don't doubt that some people would do that. That's not what I'm attempting to do here though for sure. I just want an iPad that doesn't look like crap, and am willing to pay for it, haha.

AFAIK, the replacements are going to be refurbs, you may/may not get a pristine iPad...
