Black iphone, have had it about 3 weeks and no scratches on the screen, but a couple tiny ones on the back. I think its just normal wear and tear. So far I haven't dropped it *knocks on wood* although it is very slippery and I could see myself accidently dropping it at some point. That would be the only reason I would want a case for it, to make it less slippery and less likely I would drop it. I don't care if the back gets scratched to hell though, as long as the front is in decent shape and the phone works.

I think more people here should embrace a worn in iphone, and not be so obssessed about it being in immaculate condition forever.

I agree with you 100%!

Fair enough. I think most would expect a phone to be worn after, say, 3-4 months.

Don't take it out... and when yo do ... don't be too upset when your chrome is all scuffed up...

I took it out to see if what you said held true and my iPhone is still scratch free. it was tough getting it out of the case. This is by far one of the most durable cases there is. I have dropped my iPhone several times and it has not been damaged by the fall once. :apple:

Just had a quick look, and after 3 weeks on a black 8 gig no scratches to be found. I keep it in my pocket naked except screen film from the apple store with my handkerchief, never anything else. Apple logo and chrome rim all scratch free. That said, I massively agree with those saying that the odd scratch shouldn't matter - it's all about how it works, and as long as the internals and the touch screen function properly, one's iPhone experience won't change...

White 16gb, got it on launch day.

Lots of tiny scratches on the apple, some small ones on the chrome border. Screen is still perfect.

I carry it in my pocket with no case of any kind.

I have had two terrifying drops: one from about 3.5 feet onto brick (argh!). And one from about two feet onto hardwood floor. No apparent damage either time, mercifully.

So isn't the real question here: how much will a slim-fitting case (i.e., one that is comfortable to carry around in my pocket...and cool-looking!) protect my phone from serious scratches and accidental damage? My guess is: not that much, but I dunno.

A tiny, barely noticable scratch on the back that is only visible after polishing and under direct light. Some slight scratches on the chrome, also impossible to notice without looking for them. Don't expect anything that sees frequent use to stay new forever, just take care of the thing and it'll hold up well. Keep mine on the cloth at home, otherwise it gets it's own pocket or my hands.

Like new. Mine has only been out of its case for about 7 min since July 16. And those 7 min were just during activation in the AT&T store.

really really good!

really i dont think any scratches

i have a bodyguardz on the back and screen protector on front from apple.

I have a sena case that i keep on my waist and if i dont want bulk i slip it into an oakley sunglass bag i have and throw it in the pocket.

I have a 16GB Black that I got about two weeks ago. I keep it very clean. I have a screen protector on the front, and almost all of the time I keep it in my Orange Rubber Incase thing. Anyway, no scratches that I have noticed yet. Maybe 1 or 2 on the sleep button but that's about it.

Seems that people here have been taking pretty good care of their phones. I saw a friend's black one the other day and it looked pretty scratched up which was noticeable against the black back. I wonder how white iPhones look when they're scratched - could look worse due to dirt build up or it could be like the macbooks, unnoticeable under most lighting conditions.

Just hairline scratches on the chrome trim. It's always kept in a case. I have found that the scratches on the trim will happen no matter what since dust gets in between the case and the phone. No case can prevent that unless it's air tight and that isn't going to happen. Other than that, both of my white phones are perfect, no scratches on the backs. The chrome scratches happened on my three 1st generation phones too and they were always in cases.

Black iPhone 16GB.
Got on launch day.
Been unprotected since day 1, although i have tried to handle it somewhat carefully to prevent massive scratches and dings.
In normal daylight, if i tilt the iphone i see a few scratches on the back mainly in the apple logo, none on front, a few tiny ones on silver bezel (hardly noticeable).
Under a light i see a few more tiny scratches on back.
I'm not totally worried about my iPhone looking brand new, therefore i try not to obsess over them.

Phones get scratched. I don't think I've had a phone yet that hasn't got afew scratches here and there you're not going to prevent it, or if you are, you have to be pretty obssesive about it, which will hinder your enjoyment of the phone.

Just relax and enjoy the phone rather than worry about afew scratches here and there.

I lol'd @ people who believed this... It's honestly a bad photoshop, and for maximum hilarity it uses one of the earlier leaked iPhone pics.

I was just reading to the end of the thread before I called your bluff! No way are they normal wear and tear scratches and you were just too blasé about it. :)

i have the 3G black... the back is pretty severely scratched. it has a deep 1cm scratch, dunno how it got there. also some buffed scratched areas. weird. i keep it in my pocket with nothing else

I thought my phone was scratch free until I looked at it in a room with fluorescent white light and all of the flaws in the chrome became very apparent.

So those of you who think your phone is scratch free, try looking at it under different light at different angles. you might be surprised.

Zero scratches. No case either

Usually keep it in my pocket and I am careful to put everything else in the other pocket. Works well so far.

I don't have any scratches on mine. Maybe very small hairline scratches in a really bright light, but I think I'm being a little too paranoid. The only scratches I have are two on the chrome, but my iPhone 3G came like that, at least it isn't as bad as the condition of the first iPhone 3G I got (the one I'm using now is a replacement, I returned my first one in the store when I got it because of the screen and the chrome was scratched up).

Remember the 1st gen iPod Nano, the one that would get badly scratched from anything that wasn't air? I bought a black one, a girl at work bought a white one about the same time. A few weeks later we were talking and I mentioned how miffed I was about my iPod looking like it was 100 years old even though I treated it with utmost care. She then showed me hers (um... her iPod) and it was even more scratched up than mine, so I asked if it bothered her and she replied "Nope. I like to think of them as love scratches!"

It was all very Yin/Yang on multiple levels... So yeah, if you ever need a glass-half-full type approach to wear & tear, remember the term "love scratches".
