That's normal for the ccfl backlighting to lose its brightness of 50% every year. Thats the greatness of led backlighting, doesnt lose brightness and looks new since day 1.

So my 2 year old MBP is only 25% as bright as day 1? (100/2=50 50/2=25)

It has lost some brightness but not that much. I would say that I am at about 80% brightness and my viewing angle seems to have reduced a little because of it. I have also noticed some backlight bleed but nothing too bad. If either takes a turn for the worse in the next year I will surely head to the Apple store (and then probably one of the other 5 near me if the results aren't what I want).

how much longer do LED last for if they do last longer?

Most LEDs are rated to last about 100,000 hours of continuous usage. They simply work or they don't, there is no dimming. That is over 11 years of full brightness if you never turned the screen off.

You're MBP will be long dead by then. In fact, you'll be on OS XIV by then...

The drop in LED output depends on several things: temperature, current, etc. Unless you use your computer 24/7 at full brightness, the backlight will outlast the computer.

OTOH, CCFLs always run full brightness. Short lifespan is the result.

i have a coreduo macbook for a little over a year and my brother bought the core 2 duo macbook. I remember comparing it full brightness next to each other and I was shocked to see how much dimmer my macbook was compared to his. My mb actually looked almost 50% dimmer than my brothers mb.

But if I never compared to it side by side, I probably wouldnt have noticed the mb's dimmed screen until another year. But the difference was huge in brightness. I dont know why the new mbs dont have the macbook air's led screen.

To the human eye even if the ccfl backlight would dimm, the eye will adjust to the lower dimmed backlight, so to you it would feel 80% from full when actuality its been reduced 50% from full brightness per year, but thats if you use it in full brightness all the time so m
if you use it half or a bit over half brightness it could be reduced to 25-40% per year.

LED backlit LCD screens supposedly grow dim more slowly than CCFL.

LEDs will burn at FULL brightness until the day they die... that is how the technology works.. they will not grow dimmer slowly..please do not quote misinformation..
