If you really want to get top-dollar re-selling your phone, you "need" some type of protection on the screen. While the small micro-scratches don't bother most people, they do affect the price you'll get for the phone.
That said; I don’t care. I bought the phone for me to enjoy, not for the “next guy”. I use minimal protection on the sides/back but I don’t expect my phone to be in “like-new” condition after a year or two. The way I see it; if you get too caught up, any extra profit from re-selling will be lost in protecting your phone. You can easily spend as much on cases/screen protectors to overtake the gap from “Good” to “Excellent” condition. In the end you save little to no money and still lose out on experiencing the phone as intended.

I do want to toss in the caveat, that if you are a woman who wears earings or carries your phone in a purse, you may end up with significant scratches. A screen protector may be a good idea in these cases.

Im using a clear screen protector worth 3 euro per piece. I don't see why not and why should pay more than that. The 3 euro screen protecter is bubble free and doesn't hide the beauty of the retina display, it does have finger marks but as long as it covers my screen from scratches I can live with that.

I don't use a screen protector. I use a Case-Mate Pop! case, and I feel that is enough protection.

Screen protectors take away from the "feel of the phone."

I have never used a screen protector on any of my iPhones, and have never had any scratches. IMO, they are a waste of time and money on an iPhone, with hardened glass.

I completely agree. Although I did have a screen protector on my 3G. However, beginning with my 3GS and now my 4, my phone is completely naked. Knock on wood, I'm extremely careful with my phones.

I use one without any real complaints. I could not notice any differences in screen/color quality and it feels like its still a bare screen. Wiping fingerprints is a small price to pay in my book. :)

Agreed. I tried a Zagg on my 3G but I couldn't get it on right so I said screw it and never looked back. Never had any problems with the screen on any of my iPhones (but I DO always rock a case).

Because the oleophobic coating wears off and looks like crap. Its just that a coating and being a coating, it will wear off in time. I've also read about how the back of the phones getting scratched up fairly easily. So why take a chance on an expensive device.

Is it over kill, some may think so, but the moment you get a scratch, or the coating starts clouding over, you'll not think so.

I've had a 3Gs since launch day with no screen protector. The oleophobic coating is still perfect, not a single scratch on the screen, and the only thing I use to clean the screen is my shirt.

While I can see the value in a case to protect the plastic (and I use a case), I haven't seen any compelling reason to cover the glass and give up that sweet coating.

i haven't used a screen protector for my iphone 4 for over 6 months and it still looks great. also, i am not a very careful person. i find that the glass is pretty scratch resistant. plus, i really love how the glass feels over the cheap-ass plastic covers that just gets gross over time.

Powersupport shields all the way. Front and back on my iPhone 4. My first iPhone 4 got scratched very easily. Had it replaced for a different issue and have had the screen protectors on it since.

No one ever listens to me when I say that a PS Crystal shield is like having NOTHING on your phone, compared to friends naked iPhone's, its impossible to tell other than the small cutout around the home button and ear piece.

I had an invisible shield and it was terrible, screen felt rubbery, looked terrible, it collected lint and eventually had to be taken off because it was coming up in several areas. I've had my PS on for 5+ month with no signs of it coming off anytime soon.

I do not use a screen protector and I've never had a scratch on my OG iPhone or iPhone 4.

Screen protectors are the biggest money scam ever. A thin small piece of plastic that sells for $20? Excuse me? You realize it probably costs them maybe $0.02 to make. I used one on my old iPhone 3GS and I pretty much hated how it felt and for the year and a half that I had that phone I kept it in PERFECT condition, just to give to my sister that she could enjoy. I did not get the full experience of owning such a small and amazing device that feels great in the hand. I was always worried about scratching it or dropping it. Now with my iPhone 4, I just have a slim case with no screen protector and I'm loving it.

But the screen protector doesn't have an oleophobic coating at all. So you're trading in a oleophobic coating that you'll have for some period of time for no coating ever. As for the back, just get a case that covers the sides and the back.

i bought Ozaki mirror shield and planning to get switcheasy soon as well.
