Hi all, Long time member first time poster,

I bought the ultra, Have never owned an Apple Watch before. What are peoples thoughts on weather or not I need a screen protecter?

I do like to work out in different ways and get out in nature. I don't want to have to worry about knocking it or smacking it into things but kinda want to believe I can without a screen protector as it's a daily as well. Could it possibly be safe to except it to last for years and still be pristine......

I purchased

(3 Pack) Supershieldz Designed for Apple Watch Ultra 49mm Tempered Glass Screen Protector, Anti Scratch, Bubble Free

On Amazon. Easy application and can't tell its there.

The other day I accidentally dropped my Ultra and it landed face down on a tile floor. Not a scratch or chip resulted. Not even a dent or scratch to the titanium body. Seems to be rather strong on its own. There is a slight lip of titanium that is above the crystal face, so that probably helped to prevent any potential damage to the sapphire face.

I had the series 4 stainless steel with sapphire crystal worn every day for 4 years in all sorts of rough conditions, and never a scratch. The Ultra seem more robust, so a screen protector seems unnecessary.

I like mine.

Never used a screen protector or case on any of my Apple Watches over the years. You can certainly tell they’re there and they look awful. I think it’s fine to use them on a phone or tablet but not on a watch. I’ve never had any significant damage on my watches maybe a few very minor scuffs.

The face is sapphire crystal. Completely unnecessary in my opinion. I've had various Apple Watches on my wrist for 7.5 years and have never scratched or cracked a screen. Have you ever seen anyone with a screen protector on a Rolex sapphire crystal? It's not a thing because those screen protectors offer no additional protection and are a cash grab.

I wouldn't bother with one since it's sapphire. On the ion-x (or whatever they call it) glass on my aluminum Apple watches I always wind up with scratches, but I have yet to ever break the screen. One of the reasons I'm likely upgrading to the Ultra this year is for the increased durability.

Watch Ultra. 12 days old. Working from home. Haven't even worked on the cars, cut the grass, or done anything remotely intense.

I still have my SS Series 4, which I wore for 3 years. Working on cars, home DIY, gardening, volunteer firefighting, smacking against door handles, plus an interstate move... FLAWLESS. Not a single f*cking scratch. And this f*cking Watch Ultra has a scratch on it after not even 2 weeks of extremely light use. Absurd.

Seems like a screen protector might not be a bad idea. I'm tempted to take it back to Apple and see what they say. I fully understand that this scratch is MY doing, but what kind of sh*t screen can't hold up 2 weeks when their Series 4 sapphire held up for 3 years and took a much greater beating?

"Completely unnecessary" LOL.

Stainless Steel Series 4. 3 years, ~22 hours/day --> FLAWLESS.

Watch Ultra --> 12 days, ~23 hours/day --> already scratched. I work from home. I've done nothing even remotely intense in the past 12 days. "Completely unnecessary".

More like "completely unbelievable" that this f*cking $800 watch couldn't last even 2 weeks without scratching.

I have had a Apple Watch since the first gen release, several generations of the Stainless Steel (Most recent was the Series 7) and now I have the Ultra. I have never used a screen protector on any of my Apple Watches and never had a issue with screen cracking, scratching, etc.

So what did you actually hit it on? We’ve all seen how much effort is required in scratching the screen so that is very unfortunate 🙁

I mean it's Sapphire crystal, so 100% you have done something weird with it, because no that screen doesn't scratch from light use.

Rules one: Never take your watch off or put it on over a hard surface like a tile of concrete floor.

LOL that may be so, but I have NO idea honestly. What motivation do I have to "do something weird" and then come here and claim I did nothing? Not trying to disagree by the way. This screen should not scratch from light use. And I have 3 years of SS S4 for proof. Of course yes, they might have changed the sapphire screen between these two models that are 4 years apart...

I haven't cut the grass in 2 weeks, I last changed my oil a few weeks ago before getting this watch, I haven't done any gardening, I haven't done any home DIY. Yesterday I cleaned out the soap drawer of the washing machine. I had to shove my hand in the opening where the soap dispenser goes, and the water is sprayed in. I used a brush to scrub it. But it's PLASTIC in there, it's 100% plastic.

There also isn't a corresponding mark on the case that coincides with the scratch. I work from home, and sit at my desk for most of the day. Still settling in to a new house (moved) so haven't done any gym/exercise.

I agree it shouldn't scratch from light use. My SS S4 didn't scratch from light or heavy use. So I'm both confused, and a bit pissed off I guess. Obviously "my mistake", right?

But again I can't think of WTF I might have done to THIS watch that I haven't already done to my SS Series 4 without any damage. I guess that's my point. I haven't done nearly as much to this watch compared to my SS S4.

I really have no idea honestly. Like I said I haven't done any intense or demanding activities with it. Not even any car work, oil change, brakes, gardening, working in dirt. I don't get it really. I think I'm just going to return it on Saturday and order again. I'll just have to wait 3 f*cking weeks for the next one. Oh well, first world problem. But a crappy start to 2-3 years of Watch Ultra ownership I guess. Thanks for your reply.

@ASquared44 Sorry to see your scratch! Were you mining diamonds??
Haha nice! No diamonds here... Also sorry if I came across as sh*tty in my reply to your message. I AGREE, it should be completely unnecessary to have a screen protector. I went for 3 years with my SS S4 with zero protector. I have NO idea how I scratched the Ultra. But what's annoying is that I did SO much stuff with the S4, and it was perfect. I moved states, I did volunteer firefighting, I work on both cars, I do gardening, I smacked it against door handles, did all sorts of home DIY... And zero scratches at all. I have this Ultra for 12 days and I'm f*cked 😆.

I think I'll return and reorder. Seems like a crap thing to do, but for $800 + $99 AppleCare+ I don't think I have much of a problem doing it. And I don't want to be staring at that scratch for the next 2-3 years, that's for sure. A case of "sh*t happens" for sure.

It must have inadvertently come in to contact with something inside the washing machine drawer. If that’s the only time it’s been anywhere near something. Whatever did it would have done it to your S4 as well, no doubt. Just one of those really frustrating one odd things that can’t be predicted. As with you I’ve never used screen protectors and done quite a bit wearing them. It’s a very unfortunate event. Doesn’t make me want to use a screen protector though 😆

I guess so 🤷‍♂️. It's genuinely the only thing I can remember doing that have caused any issue. I've assembled IKEA furniture, I've unpacked a bunch of moving boxes, assembled plastic shelves in the garage... I don't know man, quite unexpected honestly.

Agree it's an unfortunate event. And I agree with you lol, I don't want to use a protector either... At least with the Ultra it's easier to do, and arguably more discreet. Since the watch glass is flat... But I don't use a screen protector on my phone, both for the appearance and just for the feeling of the actual screen. If I return and rebuy this Ultra, I doubt I'll put a protector on it. I'll just try to be more mindful I guess? 🤷‍♂️. Sh*t happens. Thanks for your reply.
