After nine months of heavy using my iPhone 3G and watching some others:
NO screen protector necessary! The glass has very good quality and is resistant to scratches. I've checked it right now (after a cleaning) for a complete minute or so under a magnifying glass in all possible viewing and lighting angles:
No scratches at all on the glass! Like brand new. Any proof possible.
I've got such a transparent protector sheet delivered together with my Griffin Clarifi Case and never used it, because:
- it never feels as smooth and slithery like the pure glass, tested with some protector products on iPhones and iPod touches of friends. That is very important for apps that need much fingertip sliding (not only games but even the virtual keyboard if you make use of the punctuation marks shortcut) in my honest opinion. Those sliding techniques (gestures) will get more and more important I guess because they are playing a great role in those modern touchscreen input features. (RIP mouse.)
- when it's very cold or wet outside it is getting worse with those plastic wrappers.
- the screen is not so easy to clean because the dirt (oleaginous...) sticks better on plastic than on glass. Cleaning (VERY thorough) of a "naked" iP3G is just a matter of seconds with a (bit) moistened and a dry cloth you'll find in any bathroom. All those plastic foils need to be scrubbed more or less or treated with soap.
- it is very hard to put those thin sleeves on esp. when you use a hardcase that protects firmly the chrome bezel like Griffin Clarifi. Somebody
described that very well in
this MR thread.
I am afraid that the new coating on iP3GS (I've never seen it other than at photos admittedly) seems to be something like a "built-in foil" and therefore
I vote urgently that iP customers can choose between
- coating or not
- glossy or matte
My personal decision would be: No coating, matte.
(Maybe I'll change my mind when I actually get a 3GS in hands but after all I've heard here and elsewhere the coating seems to be a
no no because you can't take it off like a foil if you don't like it.)
