It's too long of a drive to the Apple store from my house. My schedule doesn't allow for it right now and I made sure Apple understood that. Just make sure that you speak kindly on the phone with them.

Swap your screens with Yellow Tinge-free, but Dead Pixels Ridden, Dust filled Displays😀 (one time swap only) 🙄

Well, I have had experiences in the past where it has gone from bad to worse with Apple. Fortunately these are rare. However, it seems to me that opening this machine up in an Apple Store for repair might invite trouble in the way of dust or whatever. Also, I have a screen that does not have dead pixels and a very slight if any yellow tinge. This is my third iMac and to be honest I'm really tired of going back and forth 90 minutes to the Apple Store. So I prefer to sit this one out for now and see what transpires. Yes, I would prefer a complete exchange for a new machine with a perfect screen.

In the past when I've had someone come to my house to repair an iMac they used a black light and made sure not a single spec of dust was on the screen. I've already got 2 dead pixels along with the yellow tinge so I don't see how it can get any worse.
I was being sarcastic, not telling anyone they should settle for less. Of course if the yellow is bothering, then by all means get it swapped.
Being an IT guy myself, I am always weary of other guys working on MY stuff, and I am always the most Anal about bad or sloppy work.😉
waiting to see how this plays out of course.
as did all the promotions, advertising, announcements when the imac was first released that it had "the ultimate display"

My suspicion is that the screen replacement "program" was instigated simply to slow down the number of returns. This way, Apple is in control of the situation, having convinced people to hang on to their machines (instead of returning two or three more) and when replacement takes place, Apple stores will be able to get customers to "sign off" on repairs face-to-face.
I doubt the replacement screens have been "fixed" as such. The wait for repairs to be instigated has probably been nothing more than the time it has taken to brief store managers and repair centers on how to officially handle this problem, to avoid exchanging hundreds more machines.
I expect we'll have reports of some good/some bad replacement screens from this program, just as before.

Someone wrote that Apple didn't know that the 21.5 had problems, which I can't believe. There are at least two sites that keep track of reported problems, with lists of the weeks with the problems and hardware configurations. There is also a less comprehensive poll here.
This goes back to November at least. When I called last month, each of the reps I talked to at Apple admitted that the problem existed.
I was instructed to send my pictures to Apple engineering. There are far too many 21.5s with this issue for the problem to be ignored.

Yes, the problem with the 21.5" is as severe as with the 27".
I hope they fix it at the same time.

I was told by Applecare rep. that I cold not get on site service because I lived less than 50 miles from an Apple Store. This in in the US. I live 25 miles from an Apple Store , but it will take me over an hour to get there because of the traffic congestion in that area and it is in the opposite direction of my place of work. I promised to take the tech. to lunch, but they would not budge. Maybe I was too nice ? 😉

Huh. I just read the terms of Applecare and the part about onsite service says that you must live within 50 miles of an authorized service provider to have onsite service. So I think the tech told you wrong. You should try someone else, and point out the documentation. This is, of course, if you have purchased extended Applecare for your desktop Mac.
So if you live within 50 miles of an Apple store and have Apple Care they will come to the house and replace the screen?

I live 90 miles from an Apple store. I do not have AppleCare. It is a third party company (Qualxserv) that Apple is sending to my house. I told Apple I would be happy to return the machine for a new one shipped to my door or they can send someone here. They went for the latter.

Apparently it is an option. I'll quote the relevant text from the actual terms and conditions of North American Applecare:

I think 'a bit unfair' is an understatement, if they sell you a $2k computer, they'd better make it working, however many replacements it takes...
I had an appointment to do it but canceled. I'm going to wait and see what happens.
Well couple of reasons. The time involved driving 90 minutes each way to the Apple Store. The fact that when I call they won't tell me if it is even in stock. Then, I don't want to get a screen that is worse than this one having dead pixels, dust and whatever. What's to say these new ones they are putting in aren't the same or worse. No one really knows yet that I have seen. So I'm not saying I won't do it but think I'll wait and see what people report.

I will end up with a machine that has yellowing, flickering, a high pitched squeal and an unstable hard drive. When I call Apple for service I will be told they are sorry, but they have simply run out of iMacs and will no longer be fixing/replacing. Thank you for buying Apple.
