Tonight's update to OS X Lion Developer Preview 4 includes an enhanced login screen (as seen during the WWDC keynote), including a new background showcasing the dark linen background that seems to be everywhere in iOS and OS X these days.

The old login screen displayed the clock and a Wi-Fi menu. The new screen also displays the current built, current IP address, and computer name -- cycling through the information is accomplished by clicking on the clock.

You know, you can get ACTUAL screenshots of the login screen using the terminal:

Code:
sudo screen -m -d bash -c "sleep 60; screencapture /Users/YOURHOMEFOLDER/Desktop/picture.png"
Run that in the terminal and log out to the login screen, and within 60 seconds you'll hear the snapshot sound, log back in and you'll have your screenshot.

UPDATE: See, I got a proper screenshot ;)

This is gorgeous. So much more sophisticated than the space background.

I love the tangible non-tech look.

I wonder if u will be able to change the log in backround (wallpaper) like u were able to do in leopard and snow leopard, by replacing the file?

Ya, I wish I got that screen. On my MacBook Air, no issues with the WWDC seed or this update. On my MacBook Pro, icons do not show up. All I get is a blank screen on the login screen with the WWDC version and with the latest update I get just linen. No user icons, no nothing else. As well as in icon view in Finder I do not see anything there.

Luckily I can hit key combination and enter in my password to login.

Looks like I will need to do a fresh install on the MacBookPro instead of an upgrade.

I like it.

Although I don't understand what the author is referring to when they say the look is popping up everywhere on Mac OS and iOS these days.

pay as deve?

Developers registered in the Mac dev program, do they have to pay to get Lion? I mean, they can download it for development and testing purposes, but then do they have to buy it from app store or they can just use it as normal?

I think it's referring to the Linen texture look. It first appeared in iOS and has made its way over to the Mac now, in Lion it can be seen all over the place.

Is the option still there to change the login screen to require both username and password?

Looks good. I was getting tired of the space look.
