I use it all the time. I use it to save files such as Word.doc and PDF files. It just allows me not to have to bring the MBA along with me. I also use it for photos, music, and anything I can backup into it for safe keeping.

How many 13" Air owners frequently use their SD card slot? And for what??? photos, music, additional storage, file transfers??? Speak up...

I have found the slot useful in my 2010 MBA, and use it to transfer video footage from my camcorder, mostly. The SD card slot, or lack thereof, was not a deciding factor when I bought my current model 11" MBA, however it would have been nice if it had one.

A tangential issue, how realistic is it to use the SD reader as an expansion slot, to stick in a 32 or 64 GB (or future larger affordable sizes) in there semi-permanently?

It's not. Because half the card sticks out :(

You can get a micro-SD card, put it in an adapter, and then cut the excess off. Someone posted pictures of it before and it only stuck out a hair.

It has measurable an impact on your battery life, though. A guy at work was using a 32GB card to keep his iTunes on.

Oh ok, I didn't know that. I've only seen it used with normal SD cards.

I have the 11" but if I had the 13 I might have considered that. But I even have 30GB of my 64GB left over at the moment so I wouldn't have the need for it anyway.
