iPhone apps will be as plentiful as widgets. the sdk will spawn a new industry similar to the original palm pilot's many many downloadable apps.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but won't the SDK allow greater access to the iPhones existing applications and functions that web apps? If true, then we should see built-in applications that are more sophisticated because they can control more of the phone's functions and integrate more fully with other applications.

The SDK will be an absolute hit ... and I can't wait!!!

I somewhat agree with the OP. When people find out that they can only get the apps created with the SDK through iTMS and they have to pay for the apps, many will choose to use the free web apps instead of paying for the SDK apps.

Possibly. For myself, I will pay reasonable amounts, no more than $10, for well developed applications.

I would be willing to pay for some better games. I would really like a Guitar Hero type game and one with the guitar strings like the one in the Apps/hacks forum here.

I wasn't saying that there is absolutely no reason for people to create apps with the SDK, and that there aren’t benefits to native apps, I was just saying that hey, the web apps with these home screen icons already have a great feel to them and I think some people are not as interested in the SDK as they once were, myself being one of those people. When I said I "was over It" I was of course exaggerating as how can one be really over something that isn't released, all I’m really getting at is that from a business standpoint, apple shouldn’t have released the feature of adding home screen icons until after the SDK has been released, giving 3rd party developers more time to peak consumer's interests. Yes I am still looking forward to what the SDK will bring, but I don’t find myself yearning like i did before 1.1.3.

iam new to all this what are web apps and SDK etc how will effect me and my i phone

Software Development Kit

Its going to be released to developers in late Feb to allow access to the Iphone's inner workings. Im sure we will see a serge of legit, native, non hacked 3rd party apps shortly after its release

I doubt very much that no apps will be free. Apple distributes thousands of free podcasts through iTunes, and no-one has a problem with that. There will be plenty of free stuff for the iPhone.

It looks like it'll depend a lot on what the app does.

Apps that want to use the network, phone, file storage, etc, will no doubt need a security certificate as other OSX apps can have.

If it just stays in its sandbox, like a self-sufficient game, then it probably won't need one.

The kind of certificates that Apple uses cost about $300 a year. (Versus $20 for unlimited apps on a Blackberry.) I doubt many hackers will be willing to put out a totally free app, like say an Instant Messenger or MMS, that needs a cert each year forever at that price.

So they might have to charge a little.

A podcast is much different then an application. It's going to cost Apple some money to take sdk apps, review them to look for security problems, bugs, and incompatibilities with other sdk apps and then to release them on iTms. I doubt you will see any free aps released.

why not some free ones?

For all of the potential iphone buyers out there waiting for MMS, Videocamera functionality and other important APPS, this will create a new wave of purchases for Apple.
Maybe?

Will the SDK be available for everyone, or only a select few? If the latter, then I don't think the SDK will make much of a difference, because every new app will probably have to be approved by apple, which means the really "cool" stuff like an NES emulator, skype, etc., will still require a jailbroken iphone.
