Front-facing cam: Don't we have enough cameras in our house already? When I want a picture, I get out the digital camera—or my iPhone. This thing is suppose to work with the iPhone—not replace it. The decision to leave the camera out is a product positioning one.

Rear-facing cam (video conference). Not practical. You would have to hold the iPad at the exact angle needed during the whole call. You wouldn't be able to type anything. Plus there would be lots of shaking.

Really, the ergonomics escape me...needs a stand, proper orientation, etc....with a phone, it's a whole lot less tiring to aim and shoot...

why oh why did this thing not come with a camera.....

It would have been pretty close to being "perfect" for a 1st gen device....

bring on the 2nd gen with camera, and the ability to run more than one app, and im sold.
:D

I'm just wondering but if you iPhone is jailbroken, can't you use that as you wifi and forget about the 3G? In theory of course.

why would anyone vote negative on this news. isn't voip a good thing?
Just referring to the iCall app, it seems to be for Northern America only (atm any way), so not much use for the rest of the planet. I was very excited to see this, but now not so much. If this means Skype will be allowed to do it, I will be impressed.

I still cannot grasp why they didn't add a front facing cam. If this device let me do Skype and video iChat, I think it would be ideal. So now I am going to have to wait and see if there is a dock connect-able camera or else wait for a 2.0 revision.

I live in a different country to my family and a lot of folks I grew up with and use my laptop for video skype often in my lap sitting up. this device would have been perfect for me if it had a screen cam. Can't help but be a little un-impressed with this omission and the lack of multitasking and HDMI out.....

Home landline already dead for me.

people still have home landline phones?

I know, right? I haven't had a landline at home since '99. Actually, we've got one now (it's bundled with our 100mbps fiber) but we've never actually plugged in the phone we bought for it a few years back. Last I checked, it was in my two-year-old's toy box. heh

wow, now this could be a killer feature. THE DEATH OF THE HOME LANDLINE!

I haven't had a home landline for about 10 years now... sounds like you're a late adaptor :)

Same here, my cable package deal (internet / digital TV / analog TV / phone) includes a phoneline, but I only use my mobile. Who actually needs a landline nowadays anyway? That ship has sailed years ago...

What the hell is a micro SIM card? I've used many many many carriers worldwide and I've NEVER seen a carrier use anything else than a normal SIM card (I thought all SIM cards were the same size). Hell, SIM cards are small enough, why make them smaller? I don't think space is such an issue on this device!

Buyer's guide? Mindows/Padows?

I haven't found the iPad in the Buyer's Guide. It's a shame, because I wanted to see, how long until an upgrade.

There is already enough articles about the product. I can imagine that there are more front page articles about tablet than the MacBook range.

One last thing...

Snow Leopard doesn't support touch screen, Windows 7 does. Why do people bash the latter on other tablets, why so many are disappointed not to have Snow Leopard on any tablet?

Perhaps following 'Hackintosh', it's time for 'Mindows'? Or 'Padows'? 'Macdows'?

wow, now this could be a killer feature. THE DEATH OF THE HOME LANDLINE!

The problem is you really need an emergency line you can depend on. In the UK I remember a case where a woman died because their only emergency line was a mobile phone out of coverage (I can't remember all the details but that was the gist).

(1) 128GB Memory
(2) Better Aesthetics (Skinny Bezel, More Screen)
(3) A hybrid OS. This software resembles iPhone OS too similarly.
(4) 16:9 Screen Ratio. I will not have Apps that don't fit into the screen.
(5) Larger App Icons. Why are they the same size as those on the iPhone

Now that I think about it, the thing wasn't too bad. I think we were all expecting to be disappointed, subconsciously. How could a product match the months of hype?

1) At this time the price of memory would have ruined final price points
2) you need a wider bezel to hold the thing
3) A third OS version? Not practical. And no one should expect thi type of device to run SL
4) A different ratio would make the thing awkwardly ugly (not like a familiar pad of paper). Letterbox your movie or pan and scan.
5) The icons ARE larger than the iPhone icons.

The expectations were for an impractical product to do EVERYTHING. It will do 99% of what most people do on computers.

Well a camera is probably good for one thing and that's video conferencing, is the iPad the best thing for this, how you you keep it in the correct position? If i'm on the couch, I don't want to hold this thing in a fixed position, as my arms will ache. It's different if your working on this, as the angle is not so important, you can rest it on your knees or on your lap, but I think the camera would be constantly at the wrong angle. I think an iMac or a Macbook is still a better way to do video conferencing, as the screen that holds the camera is fix in a position. I think it would be better in an iPhone for quick video chats, but even then i'm not sure.

If they made an AppleTV with a camera or a display for the AppleTV with a built in camera, I think that would be a real success!

I maybe wrong, and iPad 2.0 will have a forward facing camera, but by then it shouldn't impact on the price, which I know they are trying to keep as low as possible.

So?

Over 6 months ago I spoke to people in Australia and the UK from Vietnam using the ubiquitous wifi using a 2nd gen ipod touch and the skype version of the day.

woopdedoo.

catch up US

Agreed on all points. So many people are upset because what they really wanted was a modbook made by apple. What we got was something that is more useful for more people. It's like one of the posts I read where someone called Logic a basic user app. Please, basic apps are what 80-90% of people use on a daily bases. This covers all of them. I started saving for this thing months ago, already planning on selling my hackintosh msi wind(which all I use for is surfing and email) and going to get the 64GB 3G. Give me a good citrix client and this is what I will take to my meetings at the hospital where I work. The only thing I didn't see that I would have liked is a landscape stand; and I know someone will make a rotating stand so I'm not too concerned.

Even if you sort out the network issues according to which even with a GSM codec you will have huge delays over EDGE and 3G due to high packet loss (bandwidth is fine latency isn't, maybe some providers in Europe are fine) VOIP without multitasking only gets half the job done. OK, you can make calls. But personally I also have an interest in receiving them :) And unless I can run a VOIP service in the background (multitask) I can't.

I run VOIP over 3g on my Nokia E71 now here in the UK (Carrier is the 'Three' network) and it's pretty good for me. Three give free Skype access for life on their service too, which also works pretty well. I prefer to use Nokia's built in VOIP/SIP software though as it integrates fully with the address book and the rest of the phone. Nokia also have a SIP custom tool for tweaking the codecs used so you can get really good call quality.

You're spot on about multitasking though. Without being able to run a multitasking VOIP solution, it's mostly pointless.

Push notification might be a way around this but I suspect it is not enough for two reasons. Push comes in to tell me I have an incoming call. I start the app, even if it starts super fast I might lose the call in the mean time. (Not to mention the VOIP app has to run a service in the background that keeps the call on, etc. This is solved for chats but I don't think it is for incoming VOIP calls.) Second is that I often miss my Push notifications. It is not like we can set them to scream at us until we acknowledge them (and even if it could I would not want this for my apps). Finally, I really want VOIP AND Google Voice work. Which means the dialer should work as well. And Apple have been a total bitch about allowing GV on the iPhone.

A third reason is that VOIP/SIP applications have to maintain registration with the service provider. I don't see a way of doing that without a full on background task daemon. Apple needs to add SIP and open it up to third parties.

I am sympathetic to Apple's concerns about battery life. I share them. So lets limit background apps. For me one beyond what I am doing would be enough. But we don't even get that. At least not yet.

That's why Apple should implement the SIP stack and control it's power usage. That's how Nokia does it. It's not a battery hog on a Nokia. I can easily go a couple of days on my E71 though it does have a 1500mAh battery. iPhone batteries are smaller despite the iPhone begin larger than an E71.

The bottom line is that all of these are fully integrated in Android. So this really begs the question why I am not switching to Android. I just might. (Well I have another problem there. That is that very few Android phones work on AT&T with 3G. But as soon as the first one comes out unless Apple delivers on the above I am switching.)

They're all fully integrated on Symbian and on Maemo too. Maemo (on the N900) even adds Skype integration. The problem is for you in the USA that you'd have to buy an unlocked Nokia as AT&T screws about with Nokia's phones to limit features.

This is a big disappointment, for this device to be really good, it should be running Snow Leopard. One of the problems I see with the iPhone is that it doesn't have a decent fine system. So passing data between applications is problematic..

Is there going to be an iWork app for this device, to make it useful? What about Office?

I was expecting a little bit more, although I am glad that iPad doesn't alienate my lovely MacBook Pro!

I think the ipad beats Chrome OS at it's own game. The OS starts up immediately and you can browse the web immediately afterwards. Also you've got the entire iworks suite at your disposal so that takes care of your word processing and spreadsheet needs :D

Correct! A netbook witch Chrome OS is junk. Compare the ipad with that. Not with a macbook. AND the ipad is ideal for books & magazines, wich we will see in the future. I think the main reason is, it's a cool mobile READER.

Apparently they've added a 'Shared Folder' which is a common storage area for documents created on the iPad. When you connect it to your Mac, the shared folder also appears in the Finder so you can swap documents between the iPad and Mac.

I would guess this is coming to iPhone OS 3.2 also and that there will be integration with MobileMe.

Watch the announcement video on Apple.com. They've demos of Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Office - who knows (or even cares) other than Microsoft?

Last night was... awful. Let's not meet again, OK?

I'm just reading the posts from last night. Man, people are genuinely pissed off!

Meanwhile, I realised something. They called it iPad for a reason. OLD PEOPLE!

.........

I have never ever been in the situation, where I felt like a pro-Apple figure on this site. Anyway, I am thinking of selling my iPhone to get one of these (to get it jailbroken) or another tablet from another manufacturer. I hate the iPhone and with a decent Nokia phone and a lightweight web browser, I wouldn't have to travel with my MacBook Pro. I can see that I will hate all the limitations, but that's Apple.

But 60-90 days to ship the bloody thing? Is this a prototype? Please, Apple, put a camera on it, before it gets to the UK! I suppose, multitasking will foloow by jailbreaking. God, I hate when people decide how I want to use something. If I corrupt some system files, so what? I CAN RECOVER THE BLOODY THING!

point 4. US letter is named US letter for a reason. The world uses the most aesthetic and ubiquitous format. I'll let you use Google to find out what the shape is.

Basically Apple could have done better with the form factor.

Now where's that new iteration of Apple's stylish bluetooth headset? I'm speaking aluminium unibody design and superb speech quality.

I would buy that in a heartbeat.

Damn, I really should have a say over at Apple's.
