I'm just hoping it doesn't have any serious problems... I got burned on the recent Seagate 1 TB fiasco in my desktop...

I'll wait a few weeks before ordering.

thanks for the clarification.. i had never purchased from newegg nor had heard of them before. its my first time installing a part myself.

Seeing how it has an "Add to cart" button on one of the largest computer parts retailers who is well known for not letting you place orders for out-of-stock parts, I'd say yes, it's available now.

i just cancelled my owc order and purchased from newegg. ill get it faster and its $20 cheaper! :)

free 3-day shipping too!

Sweet I just ordered this, now I'll have a shiny new 500GB drive to slide into my new 17" MBP when it arrives in a week or two.

I know right.. next thing I need now is 8GB of memory!! Anybody know the best deal out there? I heard the price has dropped almost to 50% of the $1200 that was initially being asked!

Yep! Just ordered one. Normally wait for the early adopters to sort out the bugs but I'm almost out of space on my 320GB 7200.

It's good to see the higher capacity @7200 came out at a reasonable starting price.

Cheers,

So tempting...I'm worried about it dying once I finally get all my stuff on it. With a drive this big enough a 1TB time machine drive will have trouble keeping up.

what to buy

I'm going to be purchasing this Hard Drive of the 5400 RPM version of the same drive in the coming week. I was wondering would I notice a big difference in speed? I do normal photoshop / dreamweaver use and I was wondering would I notice a difference in the sound of the 5400 compared to the 7200 as that is what may hold me back from getting the 7200.

I'm at the borderline here right now I don't know if I should wait for another year to get an SSD or to go for this one know.

Anyway I've been hoping for WD to release something like this.

If I drop this in my unibody MBP- will it void my warranty?

What programs did people use to copy from their old HDD- or did you do a fresh install?

just a note, the model that's available on newegg is the one without the g-force protection. most macbook pro's come standard with models that have a g-force sensor. this is the model # of the one that has the sensor: ST9500420ASG. the one on newegg is: ST9500420AS.

Apple Laptops have a sudden motion sensor built in, so having gforce on the drive would be redundant, I believe.

I am about to pull the trigger on this, however I need to choose an external enclosure so I can clone my drive using CCC (my favorite app ever)

Right now I have a hitachi 320gb 5400rpm in my computer.

What external enclosure (usb) can I get to do this. Technically if I want to clone TO the external I would need one that supports 500gb, but is there I way I can have my old drive in the external and the new one in the computer and then use CCC?
