I am about to pull the trigger on this, however I need to choose an external enclosure so I can clone my drive using CCC (my favorite app ever)

Right now I have a hitachi 320gb 5400rpm in my computer.

What external enclosure (usb) can I get to do this. Technically if I want to clone TO the external I would need one that supports 500gb, but is there I way I can have my old drive in the external and the new one in the computer and then use CCC?

I am planning to get one of the OWC FW800 shells and place my old 320GB 7200RPM into it.

If you scroll down on the right side they sell the enclosures by themselves. They have a PATA and SATA so make sure you look at the right version.

They have a USB only, USB/FW400, and USB/FW800 SATA models with self power from the port.

can you clone from an external drive to the internal?

SuperDuper's documentation covers that for you if you read http://homepage.mac.com/dnanian/SuperDuper/SuperDuper.pdf

It will require your boot up disk, granted I've never tested this out yet.

Also- does this void apple warranty?

Swapping out the hard drive does not void the warranty, however if you sneeze into your open macbook and short something out then that is a different story of course.

Just take your time and do it carefully with no screw driver slips.

Good to hear, will be ordering one in July when my warranties out :D Will most likely clone my Drive over, does it clone partitions aswell?

I got the unibody- will be easier than doing my old 07 alu MBP. That was a pain in the a**!

Despite what I said earlier, I couldn't wait and ordered it... initial reviews seem very positive.

Superduper or ccc - OS X partitions, yes, Bootcamp no.

You need Winclone to clone the Bootcamp partition.

Cheers,

For those of you buying these, can you report wether you get vibrations on the whole case? I read many people reporting this with 7200RPM drives.

I "beta tested" Seagate's 1.5 TB drives. Bought two of them and one failed after 12 days. Fortunately, I still had my movies backed up (over three drives) and a quick RMA got me a new drive. Both have been perfectly fine and I no longer have any reservations about the 1.5TB drives (knocks on wood...).

For those of you that have ordered from newegg, have your orders made it past the "charged" phase?

Yup, I ordered mine Thursday night and got my UPS shipping number late last night. I didn't choose the rush order and got UPS free 3day shipping. Mine is due here the 4th.

Did "rush my order", status shipped, expected date to get the 4th. Hoping to see some feedback on MB's before I put mine in. Will report my findings once I swap mine. Love to beta test some hardware.

Is this really correct, or does Apple just only use drives with a motion sensor in them?

I'd like to know too for sure, since I'm getting a 320gb 7200.3 that I see doesn't have gforce in it. But I believe that the sensor is in the computer itself. Otherwise apps like mac sabre wouldn't be able to tap into it.

Update: Just checked SMS on Wikipedia. Yes, the tech is in the laptop. In fact there is a chance that a drive that has SMS tech in it already there can be system conflicts:

Among the MacBook and MacBook Pro community there have been several owners who installed aftermarket hard drives already equipped with anti-shock features who reported experiencing Kernel Panic errors whenever their unit was physically moved. This is believed to be due to a confliction between SMS and the new drive's anti-shock function. The Western Digital Scorpio series of notebook hard drives have been the most frequently reported as being susceptible to this problem. In practically all cases, disabling SMS alleviated this problem without any negative performance impact.

I rush ordered mine last night, hopefully I'll get it by the 5th or the 6th. I wanna beta test this on my uni-macbook, hopefully it'll be better than the 500gb 5400 rpm that is currently in there.

So it's best to get the model number without the shock protection to prevent conflicts happening with the motion sensor?

Yay mine has been confirmed and will ship out tomorrow! Now I just need my new macbook damn it. LOL my girlfriend is going to flip when I flip over my new 3000 notebook to take the cover off.

My hubby did the same thing. "You aren't supposed to take a brand new laptop apart are you?"
I ordered a unibody 15.4" 2.4GHz 2 weeks ago, and had the cover off less than 20 min after I got it home.
I had already ordered and received a new 320GB 7200rpm to replace the stock one. I did a complete reinstall as I had no data and nothing of value on the stock one. Actualy its wrapped in the anti-static bag the new one came it.
I also took off the other cover to see how hard it was to replace the RAM. Not too hard, but definitely a pain in the a**. I'm waiting for the 4GB chips to come down and I'll have work buy me the 500GB in a few weeks after they are more available. Running on stock (2) 1GB chips is taxing trying to run multiple VM's my system hangs for several seconds at times trying to load everything, but then evens out after a few min in VM's
