so long old friend. Funny the prices for these are still high even though the 4th gen can be customized with non-apple apps without a jailbreak.

Clearly then, most people that still work at Apple are obsolete and should be classified as such, like Cook. Time for a new CEO since Apple needs one with vision.

Yup....even though the company has record profits and is now one of the most recognized brand in the world. Yup Apple is doomed.... no vision. No future.

Mine is still going strong - airplay mostly. Haven't seen a compelling reason to upgrade.

They can also add the 4th gen too, since it doesn't even support 4K. Don't rrush innovation, Apple!

The vast majority of people don't even use 4K and those that do, most of them don't use it because there is almost no mainstream content. I love my 4th gen Apple TV and I don't miss a 4K tv

There might not be 4k content, but wouldn't mind seeing 4k AirPlay. Out of curiosity (I don't have a 4K TV so wouldn't really know): how fast an internet connection do you need to decently stream 4k content?

At the moment, I believe Netflix suggests 15.6 mbps minimum.
Though that number should drop as new encoding technologies become popularized and then standardized (h.265/hevc and AV1 look promising)

7 years is a good run for a product, and good to see the TV2 supported for that long.

It definitely wasn't supported for that long though. Apple TV 2 hasn't seen updates since 2014, it never got the flat UI, YouTube stopped working. It has essentially been an airplay box with 720p Netflix for 2 1/2 years. I'm not that mad about it but to act like apple just stopped support in march 2017 is misleading.

I still own my ATV3. The ATV4 never enticed me and still doesn't. It has all the sports and TV apps I need.

Maybe when ATV5 is released and supports 4K I'll upgrade, but I'm not a fan of how large the ATV4 is so I hope the reduce the size.

I said the same thing until AT&T gave me an ATV 4 in exchange for prepaying for 3 months of their DIRECTV Now service @ $35.00/month. Now that I've cancelled our traditional DIRECTV service, ATV 4 is the only way we can watch live TV in our home (unless we AirPlay it from the DTV Now app from our phones to the ATV 3 but that would get old quickly). Meanwhile, my ATV 3 is collecting dust.

I never thought I'd own an ATV 4; but I much prefer it over the ATV 3. Also, being able to access Pandora is another nice perk of the ATV 4 that the ATV 3 will never get.

Sooooo... It's still $99, £150 right?
Unless it's PRObsolete..

I think it depends on what you want an ATV for.

If you want one for Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Showtime, or YouTube, I think that the ATV3 would be a much better choice. Not only is it cheaper, but the apps are so much better than the ATV4 versions imo.

For me, the only things I would lose out by going back to the ATV3 is Pandora and the CW app. The tvOS App Store is so lacking at the moment.

Oh yeah, I use the Siri voice search a lot, but if searching with the remote wouldn't suck so much, I would probably do without the voice search too.

Yeah Apple TV needs to be replaced with something that also has a mic and speaker for home automation and they really need to kick up Homekit adoption even if it means making accessories themselves that are reasonably priced.

I agree, they should make something like the Echo dot, but better.

I don't want any 'always listening' device in my house. I disabled hey siri as well.

I know anything can be hacked to spy but a always on device prob makes it easier.

My Apple TV's are collecting dust now that I've more or less replaced them with 3 Roku streaming sticks. Those three cost the same as one freaking Apple TV. I finally cut the cord and have transitioned to the Playstation Vue service and am extremely happy. I would have had to buy three current Apple TV's in order to support this service. Apple's rising prices have me slowly shedding Apple products. My MacBook's days are numbered I'm afraid.

Apple might not sendoff anymore updates for ATV2, but there's still lot of other uses for me.
For $100, 7 years is not bad investment.

V2 was the best ever, jailbreak made it useful, I even sold mine at a huge profit.

Why V2 over V4? Hate the glass controller, first lasted a few mins before wife dropped.

Same here. I had a gen 2 and sold that for a healthy profit to then buy 2 gen 3's. Not even sure I care about 4k at this point. My Sony TV claims to upscale to 4K. Not the same, I know. But until there is a ton of 4K content out there I don't think I need to worry about it. Anyway, these old eyes probably wouldn't know the difference. :p

I have three v2 ATVs still going strong. Although, after getting a SmartTV with the apps I use the most on my ATV, I realize just how dated the software really is. The biggest functionality I use them for these days is to stream movies off my Mac Mini media server.

Roku, man. It's the most open system, offering the most robust offerings, including access to that PlayStation & DirecTV apps. In Canada, cable companies like Shaw offers BlueSky as the equivalent.

While a bit of a 'darkhorse', Roku's 'Private' channels offering a whole world of free live streaming (flakiness, you have remember you get what you pay for).

Sad a.f. Apple users continuing to trash the latest Android (like fanboys who never have used Windows 10 yet proclaim W10 the Vista or XP) while in many venues, Apple continues to shrink its ecosystem by way of abandonment.

Paperweight only when the apps stop working. Until then, it's a little beast that keeps on going. Works great in our household!
Thank AirPlay for that. As long as AirPlay remains compatible, we can squeeze hopefully a couple more years out of it.

Crazy!
And only seven years after it was introduced.

Ah! You got a point here. I confused it with the 3rd Generation AppleTV (1080p). I guess there's still some life left in it.

I do have a 720p Apple TV; I haven't used it in a while. I just can't believe it's been 7 years already!

Oh crap! Another $100.00 device that's becoming a paperweight.

Becoming? Mine never worked right at all. Couldn't reliably play iTunes Music. I don't think I ever got it to play a movie or TV show without getting "Connection unsuccessful" errors. Other streaming boxes and other services work ok.

It's hard to want to be in the iTunes ecosystem for video when the only hardware that can play it is from Apple, and I can't rely on them to make things that work.
