I still use a couple of ATV2 for the kids bedrooms. They still do a job to access my iTunes content.

I'm completely fine with this. I'd like to see Microsoft/Samsung/Huawei/HP/Dell/etcetc support any of their tech for 7 years like Apple do.

aTV2 was great for me. Easy to jail break, ran Plex problem free for several years, and was sold for a profit.

aTV3 didn't really improve anything, and was much more problematic keeping Plex working (using PlexConnect) with an easy to identify icon.

aTV4 is the greatest, although I still wish they hadn't removed the optical out and I didn't need another small powered device behind the TV.

I used the lack of optical as an great reason to buy my big Bose soundtouch system. Truly fantastic hardware. HDMI in and out. No complaints. Nice big screen, nice big sound, not wasting money on 4K till I can get a Sony 60 for 599$ at Best Buy in 4K.

It definitely wasn't supported for that long though. Apple TV 2 hasn't seen updates since 2014, it never got the flat UI, YouTube stopped working. It has essentially been an airplay box with 720p Netflix for 2 1/2 years. I'm not that mad about it but to act like apple just stopped support in march 2017 is misleading.

You make a valid point.

My ATV2 seemed obsolete the day I bought mine. It did airplay and netflix and wasnt updated by apple to do much of anything else since then. I just bought the latest ATV bedore Christmas for the Plex app and I feel its still underutilized. I got a gamimg contoller and took it back because there wasnt a good selection of games.
All these years later and theyre still missing the huge opportunity to do something great with this platform . Households have many TVs and gaming consoles so I think there is something here worth pursuing IMO.

That's the only Apple device I was able to sell for more than I purchased it, because of the jailbreak ability. I replaced it with ATV3, which supported 1080 resolution.

Becoming? Mine never worked right at all. Couldn't reliably play iTunes Music. I don't think I ever got it to play a movie or TV show without getting "Connection unsuccessful" errors. Other streaming boxes and other services work ok.

It's hard to want to be in the iTunes ecosystem for video when the only hardware that can play it is from Apple, and I can't rely on them to make things that work.

Strange... It has worked good for me.

Oh crap! Another $100.00 device that's becoming a paperweight.

The 2nd gen could be jailbroken to install apps. 3rd gen, as far as I know, hasn't been. You can pick up a 2nd gen on ebay for $40 - $70 (depending on accessories and condition). Jailbroken ones are still selling for more than MSRP. Considering its age I think it's holding its value quite well.
